Europe » Switzerland » South-West April 7th 2010

Well our Swiss trip has come to an end but I do not think that we could have possibly found a better way to spend our three last night’s than with our host family up in a little village called Zweisimmen up in the Alps. We were greeted by Andy at the train station and whizzed up to their home overlooking the village and the Alps on the other side of the valley. For the next three days were treated for nonstop awesome views, laughs and conversations to the early hours of each evening, delicious food and so much more. We got to see the Alps in all four season pretty much in the three days. On our arrival it was a pleasant afternoon with not much snow about so we went for a hike up ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Lausanne April 5th 2010

We headed south after Basel to Lausanne which is at the base of the Alps on the other side of Lake Geneva. Luckily for us the sun was out, for this day at least and we made the most of this. It was supposed to be raining for the next few days so the first sight of sun we were rushing around the very hilly city trying to see as much as we could before it turned bad again. First stop was the church sitting above the city and we did not realize how a good a view that was offered from this point. We spent some time here checking out things and taking plenty of pictures then headed into the Church and it was opera singing practice which was a bonus for us to see. ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-West » Basel April 2nd 2010

We headed into Switzerland from Frankfurt after a couple of hours train trip. Basel is a wonderful city with a great old city with tiny little alley ways and a couple of big churches dominating the skyline. We soon found out that Switzerland is extremely expensive so it was finding the nearest supermarkets for us, getting our brekki, lunch and dinners organised to cook at our hosts place. Now our host, Angela, lives with a two other students and it was a wonderful place to be stay! The student flat has so much character, for example the shower and bath in the kitchen so when someone is having a shower it is possible to wash the dishes at the same time also. The three living there were wonderful and we had such a wonderful time staying ... read more

Europe » Germany » Hesse » Frankfurt March 28th 2010

The three of us were only in Frankfurt for a couple of nights and it is plenty enough of time to have a good look around the city. Egle, a good friend of ours is travelling with us for a trip over the Easter period and great to have her along with us. Frankfurt is realy just a financial city with not much to see as in the the old town and other things. We were very lucky though to have great host for us during our two nights and also got to visit a friend from Germany that I had meet in Adelaide a couple of years ago so it was good to see Carolin again. She is heading back to Australia hopefully next January and if any knows how to get a second working ... read more

Europe » Lithuania » Vilnius March 22nd 2010

Since we arrived back from India it has been head down ass up in our books trying to catch up with studies. We have had a fair amount of people coming and going from us over the past two months and at one stage we had four extra people in our flat, cramped but great fun! Diana’s family were over to visit for a week whilst the largest market in Lithuania was on. So that week was pretty was very busy doing things, eating and drinking way to much but that cannot seem to be stopped when visiting the locals here. We went for a day trip to visit some family friends and at 2pm on a Tuesday out come a bottle of whiskey and within one hour it was gone (also a bottle of champagne). ... read more

Asia » India » Uttarakhand » Rishikesh March 19th 2010

Rishikesh was the perfect way to finish the trip, such a relaxing place! It was the only place that there is no hastelling and walking around the streets is a pleasure to do. This place become famous when the Beatles come here for a couple of months to chill out and do some yoga. Oh yes, yoga is massive there and is supposed to be the yoga capital of the world. We gave it a go of course, only once for me though since I could not really walk the next day but Diana went a few times and enjoyed it very much! For $2.50 Aus an hour why not go as much as possible. We had three nights here, wish it was more.. Eating, sleeping and shopping was on the daily itinary for this place. ... read more

Asia » India » Uttarakhand » Haridwar February 13th 2010

First of we are very lucky to have made it to Haridwar, we take back all the bad things we have said about the train system and that it is NEVER on time. For once it worked in our advantage :) We had booked tickets a few weeks ago to go to Haridwar for the Kumba Mella festival but we were on the waiting list right up to the last night, but lucky for us we were the previous night at the function for the CEO of trains for northern India (see previous blog) and we used our charm and next thing we knew we had tickets to Haridwar and even upgraded. Why we were so grateful that the trains we late, I didn’t realise that they put us on a complete new train and it ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Lucknow February 10th 2010

Well we got a few little surprises during our stay in Lucknow, the first was more embarrassment more than anything but a funny story to have but we will get to that in a moment. We were supposed to be staying with the father of our host from Delhi but since we were completely no relying on the train to drop us of in Lucknow within a 5 hour time frame to let him know what time we would arrive we decided to stay in a hostel. But we still wanted to be able to meet him for dinner that evening. Soon enough we got in contact with him and a few hours later he had organised for us to be picked up by a couple of his workers and we were wizzed of to what ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Varanasi February 8th 2010

What a place Varanasi is! Extreme in everything here, smells, sights and taste (the taste in the air!) you get hit hard when there. The life of the city is around the river Ganges and seeing the burning ghats is something that both us are never going to forget. It really is in your face here and not for the faint hearted. Just for us to be seeing the daily life and death ritual seriously within ten meters apart from each other was amazing. From the burning of people on the banks of the Ganges and other people been sunk into the Ganges and then walking for a couple of seconds and seeing people drinking the Ganges, bathing in the Ganges and washing in the Ganges. It is all in full viewing, for everyone to see. ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Allahabad February 5th 2010

Our next city on the new itinerary was Allahabad, pretty much in the middle of know where really. Finding a place to stay was no worries with the hotel named ‘Hotel Royal’ and you would think that it would be a pretty decent sort of hotel but not this.. We have stayed in some pretty bad places but this was getting up pretty high on the worst hostel/hotel list. So we dropped off our backpacks and headed exploring around the city for the little time we had and no looking back we both wish we had a little less time really. Not too much exciting for a city of great importance. Two of India’s holiest rives, the Ganges and the Yamuna, meet one of Hinduism’s mythical rivers, the Saraswati. So people are down there in droves ... read more
