Independent visit to Bhutan Hi, I am planning to visit Bhutan this September, alone i.e. not as part of a tour group. I am not sure if this is even possible in Bhutan. I am an Indian, so I guess I won't need the visa and I am assuming I wouldn't have to pay the min. $ 200/day?
You mentioned there are many hotels in Thimpu and other places. How much do these cost (in INR)? Also on your travel, did you notice taxis or any public transport (i.e. not the ones arranged by your tour group)?
Cheers.
Bhutan Travelling as an Indian Sir,
m wanting to travel to Bhutan as an Indian and dont know the legal or other issues as well as costs and other requirements to fulfill as to travelling this beautiful cou
Tigerless at Kabini We went tigerless too. 3 exquisite days at Kabini. Highly recommended if you haven't already been there. But no tigers! Not even pugmarks! They've stopped taking you on elephants. Only noisy smoky jeeps. Boats too but they don't get too close to the animals (mainly elephants). A jeepload 4 days before us got to see a tiger and a noisy group who went after us saw a leopard. But exquisitely behaved as we were, all we got was deer (heaps of deer, difft shapes and sizes), elephants, monkeys etc. The forest is well maintained. All jungle roads (in Karnataka) are shut at night, so that the animals can do their thing in peace.
Damchen Lodge Our tour group also had the extreme misfortune of staying at the Damchen Lodge and Fooding October 2008. it had not been written into our itinerary and came as a surprise to us. We were told all other accommodations were full due to the festival. I can honestly say , in all the traveling we have done, this place was the most disappointing. The walls of the rooms and bathrooms had black mold growing everywhere. Bathrooms were filthy (we had a toilet seat that excrement on it) and the accommodations at the Damchen Lodge and Fooding posed a significant health risk.
The people of Bhutan on the other hand were genuinely warm and friendly .The country is beautiful and very unique.
an 8-yr VN expat viewpoint Dear Ilsie,
I've live here for 8-years now and came originally on a mine/unexploded ordnance clearance project and work from Hue as a mine action consultant. Firstly, the problem is unexploded ordnance [cluster munitions, large bombs, artillery, etc.] not mines and yes kids are very familiar with those - the mementos you mention were either never actual mines or would be a source of tremendous problems with explosive sniffers at airports.
The second thing is about the lazy men - these are only the guys you see in passing and in passing you see very little of the life of the country. Most of the guys are working, believe me, just like my brother in-laws - they just work jobs which are more dangerous and less visible.
Best,
Hugh
