~ traveller feared lost in sea of red tape! And here was I worrying about itinerary changes, visas and solo travel, etc., when what derailed my travel plans was an unknown change to the rules of my Centrelink Allowance. With hindsight, I realise that it was for the best, but at the time it was a big shock to me. When I rang the Department to notify them of my trip overseas 7 weeks before departure, they asked me if I was aware of the new rules; ie instead of being able to be out of the country for 6 months and still receive the Allowance, I could now only be away for 13 weeks before it would be cut off. In the last six months, I've spent countless Net hours on the 'information highway' reading the travel accounts of those who've been where I am going. Sifted through hundreds of travel sites and official country destination sites, all with glowing descriptions of 'absolute must sees!!' Looking for information which is specific to the needs of a woman travelling solo and independently. And of course having to make the inevitable itinerary changes when I hit speed bumps. Thank god for an ever-patient, much-travelled and knowledgable travel consultant. The latest glich involves the tourist visa for Costa Rica. Unlike the 90 day tourist visa a lot of other South American countries give, CR only give 30 days and must sight an exiting plane ticket within that time frame.
