gone going goa-ne!

Published: June 22nd 2010Asia » India » Maharashtra » Mumbai

In mumbai now, done and dusted with goa, where lethargy and inertia is de rigueur. The monsoon put a dampener on things, literally, as the seasonal rains deluged us on end. The torrential rainfalls put paid to the beach-bum plans, so we couldn’t really soak up the sun and sand as much as we’d fancy. Still! Goa was wicked. It necessitates that you be really deliberate and insouciant about things. The kind of place where you clock in some solid reading time, indulge in beer o’clock every afternoon, and channel leonardo d’caprio like in ‘the beach’. Yes you get the shabby beach shacks, the seedy grass-peddler, the phuket/vang vieng vibe, but well it was good while it lasted. Haha on the slated departure for mumbai we were thrown a wicked curve-ball we never quite envisaged. On ... read more

mysore musings

Abit overdue. have been in Karnataka state, did Mysore and Bangalore. bangalore was nth short of cacophonous. jarring, slightly grating, touts aplenty, the miasmic bad air that is a necessary concomitant in all urban cities didnt sit too well esp. considering we sashayed indolently from kerala. We were at cochin, spent a good couple of days on the mainland ernakulam having left fort cochin. but we were inundated with malls and more malls. And figured Bangalore would prolly be in the same mould; only many times over. So we bailed from Bangalore, bussed down to Mysore instead. Was pretty wicked, cultural capital of the State proper. caught the Mysore palace; where vestiges of the antecedent Maharaja dynasty and their usual opulence (bordering on gaudy) was the jewel (literally) of the State. Then the Devaraja market as ... read more

culture vultures in cochin

Published: June 6th 2010Asia » India » Kerala » Kochi

So we’re in cochin/kochi now. Another one of those enchanting treasure troves Kerala seems to be littered with. Cochin has been a riveting experience, where we suspend both time and disbelief. It’s the languorous waters/backwaters, I reckon, that makes for a very “lepak” milieu. Throw in a good session or 2 of ayuvedic massage, and I think it all makes for a more-potent-than-horse tranquilizer-mix. Nowhere in India/kerala can you find a mélange more assorted than in cochin. With the fêted Chinese fishing nets that line the shore, to basilicas & churches built-razed-then rebuilt by the scores of anglo, dutch, portugese colonials, and the veritable hallowed art form of Karthakali still very much art-of-the-state (haha), its hard for any culture vulture not to adore cochin. We’re residing on the island of fort cochin, very sweet. In a ... read more

the houseboat post

Published: June 2nd 2010Asia » India » Kerala » Alleppey

The nautical experience on the houseboat has been nth short of cosmic, very staggering indeed. We waltzed thru’ the convoluted corridors and alleys that defy even GPS technology! This is something really nonpareil for me; doing the 2 day slowboat ride from chiang khong (thailand) to luang prabang (laos) before was unprecedented, but nothing like the therapeutic poise and repose that a ride thru’ the backwaters of Kerala engenders. The ride lulls you into a reverie, an almost comatose induced by the sun-kissed waters, and the very rudimentary way of life that almost suspends disbelief as i think about the disparate urban jungle i have to embrace reluctantly in about in 6 weeks. As we traipsed through the waters, it is a world away from mainland/town allepey; where we are far extricated from the raucous and ... read more

its almost been a week in the State of Kerala now; a much-heralded exemplar of good governance and administration which have had the likes of Amartyr Sen waxing lyrical about. Big props to Kerala for the highest life expectancy and literacy rates, and its matrilineal social organization. keralan backwaters are very much bucolic, which is very palliative. it certainly trumps the torpor of Pondi's provençal quality. maybe cause its got smth to do with the fact that it is the putative 'venice of the east'; where the backwaters of kerala amble along slowly and deliberately, in an almost narcotic manner, compelling that you respond in kind as well. no monuments of epic proportions, no such grandiosity, just balmy and buoyant waters that weave intricate matrices and constellations some 900km worth of backwaters in Kerala. We’re in ... read more

give time a break

we're in a quaint and charming little indian union territory of puducherry (more affectionately known as pondicherry/pondi; hellooo alcohol!); with a salient and conspicuous french colonial heritage that looms large. ergo, lanes/streets are Rues and fish is poisson and they do a mighty fine coq au vin (haha yes we're not that cheap charlies afterall; we do indulge in spurts). its a seaside town so thats a pretty big plus as we soak up the bay of bengal. azure waters it patently isnt haha! water does glisten sporadically. one thing's for sure, all that glitters isnt gold, as b finds herself plagued with the mandatory stomach bug & diarrhea. its the quintessential rite of passage that everyone goes thru' to then be fully inducted into India proper haha. so she's fine & well, surmounted that litmus ... read more

pretty pretty petticoat

Chennai. pretty much where I left off the last time in india with andy & joel. Haha. Still abrasive, still grating, still in-your-face. You can nvr be fully blooded when preparing for india can you. This time we got more than we bargained for- by way of Cyclone Laila. Haha its weird how you nvr think such epic stuff don’t ever happen to you; or aren’t suppose to. Like how in china 2 yrs ago we landed in Guangzhou and there was the Sichuan earthquake. The whole world knows, sans you. Haha. This time we were only privy to Laila on the plane (Air India, no less!) made several figure 8s to circumnavigate the brutal winds, finally reached over an hr later. Plans were pretty much blighted owing to the torrential downpour la. More on continuities. ... read more

so im travel blogging once again. had a few qualms about the whole idea. even imposed a hiatus since i did the karakoram highway (china-pak-india) 2 yrs ago. for a variety of reasons. like pure indolence. and like how my writing can come across as overly elaborate and ostentatious. which is completely tangential to the very raison d'etre for writing. 2 yrs on, the moratorium has been lifted. writing and wanderlust, prime partners in crime. attached is the itinerary; b & i'd be doing south india together for about 5 wks. always knew i'd come back to india, or the south asian subcontinent for that matter. thought that i nvr quite did it justice; india always having had the short end of the stick after pakistan raised the bar really high for me. compounded by the ... read more
