"Yesterday, December 7, 1941, a date which will live in infamy, the United States Of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by Naval and Air Forces of the Empire of Japan. It is obvious that planning the attack began many weeks ago, during the intervening time the Japanese Government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace. The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American military forces, I regret to tell you that over three thousand American lives have been lost. No matter how long it may take us to over come this pre-meditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory. Because of this unprovoked, dastardly attack by Japan, I ask that the congress ... read more

We had our final breakfast bagel at the good cafe, and packed our bags ready for the flight to Honolulu. The Brazilian girls were leaving today too, so we wished them safe travels, thanked the staff at the hostel and hailed a cab to the airport. I am sad to be leaving Maui and the hostel, it really has been a great experience staying here. We checked in our bags for $30 (fingers crossed they don't get lost again) and wondered what to do to pass the time in this tiny airport for a couple of hours. Daryl happily found a massage chair and relaxed in that for half an hour whilst I went to look at the overpriced souvenir shops, before having a bite to eat. After searching on line for flights I'd booked with ... read more

It was a couple of hours drive to Haleakala national park. It's the same park we'd visited on the Hana Trip when we walked through the bamboo forest, but as it's so big, today we were more towards the northern part which is more volcanic as opposed to the rainforest we were at on Tuesday. Bridget was our driver today and she dropped us to the visitors centre before parking the vans at the top and hitch hiking back down (something quite common here!) It was a lovely view already and we had a look at the Silversword conservation greenhouse which was experimenting with the growths of the plants with varying amounts of water. Apparently these plants exist nowhere else in the world and take approximately 50 years to grow before they die off. We had ... read more

Happy Birthday! Happy Aloha Friday! Today is Daryls birthday and as we have limited luggage, I emailed him a picture of his present for when he gets home! That aside, the best present I could think of was for him to see Reuben on his birthday so after arranging it with Gareth and Michelle we skyped just after 7am our time here. Robin was glad to see Batman on his birthday, and even bat baby (Caleb) was having a good chat to us on the camera. It was nice to see everyone on the other side of the world. Daryl opened his cards before we went for breakfast and shortly returned for our day trip to beaches and Paia town. Our soundtrack for the day is the song 'Aloha Friday, no work 'till Monday....' Sleep still continues to evade me past 4am, and the cockerel (whom we've affectionately nicknamed Jan after Daryls Mam on account of how early she gets up at home!) woke Daryl up not long after that. We went for breakfast to our new favourite haunt, (and after 3 days in a row seem to have bagged the same table) before going to the chemist for some mozzie spray, seeing as my legs had been lunch for one of the little blighters in the night. We picked up some bits from the grocery store, and decided to get some beers in for later. Now I know this rehab degree has aged Daryl by 10 years in about 10 months, but since he's had some sleep, grown his hair and got a bit of sun on his face, ... read more

I managed a bit of a longer lay in this morning (5am) and Daryl woke around 0730. We went to the nice cafe for a breakfast bagel, and had a look in some of the guidebooks and on line for hostels in Oahu so we have some idea of where we can head for when we fly up there on Sunday. Issac was our guide again today, he's really good and tells you about places we pass on the way and points out some interesting stuff. Today we were visiting Wailea, just south west to where we are staying. Issac pointed out the neighbouring Island which looks lovely but has been uninhibited for years as the US Government shifted everyone out years ago and used it as a bombing range instead, talk about spoiling paradise. I was awake quite early again so was up and about before Daryl (this only ever happens on holiday!) the cockerel woke Daryl up at about 4am (I was already awake) but he managed to get back to sleep. Just after 7am we headed for the nice coffee shop we'd visited the day before 'Wailuku Coffee Company' http://wailukucoffeeco.com/about.html it really does seem to be the most popular place in this quiet town, it's always busy, but has a really nice feel to it and the food is good. We shared a fruit yogurt and granola pot and then had a breakfast bagel (Daryl had 2!) and a cup of tea. We returned to the bungalow to get our bags packed for our Road to Hana day trip. There were 2 minibuses going, each with 11 people. ... read more

I didn't really have too much of a great sleep, I don't know if this was because I'd slept quite well on the last flight or that the light outside our room was quite bright, plus the bed was by the window and there were all sorts of noises going on. I usually hate noise keeping me awake, but it was quite nice to hear all the different sounds of the birds chirping and even the cockerels when they started at 0430! Daryl thankfully had a good sleep and joined me in the land of living at about 7ish. I really wanted to go to the airport to collect our bags, but as Daryl reminded me, just because they arrived on the 6 am flight, didn't mean we could have them ASAP, as the airline desk ... read more

Aloha family and friends! After roughly 28 hours total travelling we feel like we have travelled to the ends of the earth, but finally we are here in Hawaii. We checked in ok at Heathrow, and lucky for us, sorted all our baggage labels in London so we didn't have to check in each time on the stopovers. Daryl was asleep before the plane even taxied to the runway, and we managed to have a nice flight to our first stop in Chicago. Immigration here was a nightmare, and with less than 2 hours to our connection to LA it was pushing it. We used the automated machines for photos fingerprints etc only to queue up to have it all done again at the desk. Daryl was ahead of me and gave me a wave as ... read more

So here we are. We made it. To the other side of the world and back. The flight was long and an added delay in Dubai made it longer still, but we got back home in one piece. So did Jans new china dining set that she bought in Pukekohe and boxed up to fly back with us. Sitting here in cold rainy Wales reflecting on the past month, there are always things to be learned from holidays: No matter how many times you order it, Den will still think a fry up is on its way if you order English breakfast tea, Caleb is possibly the best behaved baby on the planet-hats off to michelle again- the routine paid off-speaking of routine, the folder went everywhere with Michelle and she did a great job of ... read more
