Hiked up Glacier Crest Trail in Glacier National Park yesterday. Only two hours from the trailhead under sunny skies. Alone. Slow-paced. Seeing mountains as they are.... read more
Scarlet-gold leaf still clinging the cold grey branch Autumn in Revelstoke. Sauntering down the street is replaced by scurrying. Cool wind on the cheek. Leaves whirl. Mount Begbie iced with new snow, locked in cloud...... A season s change we cannot resist. Even autumn... slips... away........ read more
Blue, blue sky covers us. Green forest rolls on and on towards peaks etching the horizon. I'm in Revelstoke. Rather, gazing down on it. Snug against the east bank of the Columbia River. The MIGHTY COLUMBIA! From here , near the summit of Mount Mackenzie, only the River and the railway right-of-way are clearly visible. The town, an IMPRESSION from this elevation. Paragliding is why i'm up on this mountain today. I'm going to FLY with a guy I have full confidence in to get me down safely. Alan. A long time coming, this flight. My cynicism over the years referring to Alan's passion to fly as a "death sport". Moderated now by common sense and a desire of my own to open up to what life offers. Alan' s fifteen plus years of experience paragliding ... read more
My buddies, Alan and Cristy, share a passion for pigskin paegentry that transcends political boundaries. Prior to this day the three of us have watched football games in various bars and residences in Mexico. Exclusively NFL. But with A and C's arrival in Canada (drive up from Colorado) this week, and a grey, rainy Revelstoke labour day game on the TV, we had the perfect excuse to hunker down in the Regent Pub in Revy and enjoy the Canadian game. A longer, wider field. Twelve players. Larger end zones. Single point concession. Three downs to make 10 yards. Thus, a game that showcases THE FORWARD PASS and a wide open approach. Thanks to our rapport with Amy ,the server we'd met the previous day, we were seated in the billiard room with a TV all our ... read more
Most hiking days seem to have as an objective; surrounding oneself with the natural world, getting exercise, climbing to a viewpoint and just looking around. Yesterday, the added treat of foraging for HUCKLEBERRIES added another dimension to what was already an enjoyable time with friends in the mountains. John Flaa, Suzanne Grieve, and their son, Erik and I hiked through the splendor of faded wildflower meadows, jutting rockslabs, and winding alpine trails to the summit of Eagle Pass Mountain (7500 ft.) in the Monashees west of Revelstoke. Yes, 'tis the season of harvest! Berries ripe on the vine. Food for wildlife and a few humans. Until this day I had never really gone out to specifically pick enough berries to make a pie with. Usually, I've munched as I travelled between places solely for a wee ... read more
Today, a trip up Mount Revelstoke, into the National Park, on the FREE shuttle from Grizzly Plaza. No payment, no gas bill, NO VAN! So thanks to Parks Canada and City of Revelstoke for getting this together. Now, they gotta get the word out so people USE it! Yeh, a bus that takes you and all your stuff up the mountain from 1500 ft elevation up to the meadows at 6000 feet. Now, the SMOKE part.... Views in the subalpine were down to about 3 kilometres in smoke today. No wind. Warm temps. A eerie lack of movement. Complete stillness under a sun trying hard to penetrate the gauze. A four hour return hike from the summit to Miller Lake and then the trail up to the Miller/Jade Lakes col. Marmot and Pika whistles. No bear ... read more
A gorgeous BC day. Skies still smokey from forest fires, but the peaks are defined by that bluish haze, creating memorable views of Mount Begbie and Mount Cartier. Fire bombers carrying their loads of retardant flash over at mid-day. A day to chill and hang out with Molly, Paxkal and Quitzy at the Market. Tomorrow will be a hiking day i know up on Mount Revelstoke. it just feels great to be back here in Revy for all it has to offer. My old home town. meanwhile, a pic of me on Abbott ridge this week with Mount Sir Donald in the background.... read more
