Day 23 Thursday When we went out for dinner last night Mike saw the Christmas decorations and just had to take the photo! Up and off again after a sociable breakfast and lots of advice about the route to take and where to stop on the way. The first part of the journey was over the crown range – another wow moment because at the top you could see for miles and miles and miles. We stopped for ages. Eventually we headed for Queenstown and as advised we stopped at Arrowtown, an old gold mining town that had been preserved to illustrate how they lived and worked. It was an extremely harsh existence for the miners who were mostly Chinese. We arrived at our next destination at 3ish, a lakeside motel with a kitchen and a ... read more

Day 22 Wednesday Today’s journey is from Fox Glacier to Wanaka. This route takes us up and over the Southern Alps through the celebrated Haast Pass, then down by the side of a couple of lakes. Firstly along the coast to Haast. There we stopped at an information centre and filled up with petrol (just in case). There was a stall in the car park that was selling Whitebait patties – the local speciality. The whitebait is not the same species as ours, it is much smaller and thinner, but the patties were delicious. The route from Haast is spectacular and should be on everybody’s list of “must do’s”. The climb into the mountains follows the Haast river – a wide (braided) river that follows a wide U-shaped valley. We slowly climbed with the mountains a ... read more

Day 21 Tuesday Got up at the crack of dawn for the bird walk, it had been a really cold, clear night so a glorious morning. Saw a fantail, chaffinch, thrush, magpie and a bell bird – impressed aren’t you? Walked through the woods used as ‘The Lord of the Rings’ film. Back on the road again, these few days with just 1 night stop-overs are quite tiring but there is so much to see. Stopped in Hokitika cos that’s where most of the NZ jade comes from – new earrings!!!!! Still in the area of the mine disaster so an eerie quiet with lots of shops burning candles and showing support. Then drove on to Fox Glacier (which came first the mountain or the mint?) Got there about 3pm, booked in to our motel and ... read more

Day 20 Monday Up and away by 9.30 so we can stop in Punakaiki to see the Pancake Rocks. The view was well worth it, the constant roar, the way the power of the waves has sculptured the rocks and the coastline was incredible. We stayed there for ages mesmerised. Mike. For the geologically minded, the pancake rocks have alternating layers of hard and soft sedimentary rock. They are being rapidly eroded by the constant pounding from the Tasman Sea Holes and fissures have formed and the sea forces its way through these Eventually back on the road to Arthur’s Pass...but first, that petrol. The petrol light was flashing as we drove into north Greymouth and found the Shell sign. No need to panic! Deb’s dad would have been proud. When we looked at the bit ... read more

Day 18 Saturday A pleasant day spent in Nelson, firstly at the market (not usually my thing (Mike)) and then to a rather special exhibition. The market had none of the clothes stalls we see at home, but had a lot of food and craft stalls, a sort of mixture of Greenwich and Borough markets. Luckily it closed at 1pm or I hate to think what we might be trying to fit into a baggage for the flight home! We bought cherries!!!! Yes we keep pinching ourselves that it is November. We also bought one Christmas present - sorry folks we are not telling who for! After lunch by a harbour wall we moved on to an exhibition called "World of Wearable Art". This is a collection of bizarre costumes created for a special clothes show. ... read more

Day 17 Friday Exercise today – a boat trip up the coast in the Abel Tasman park then a 8km. walk before the boat picks us up. No jetties – the boat grounds on the beach! The walk was terrific – a bit hilly, wending its way through unspoilt forest on the water’s edge. But half way along, we came to a suspended bridge over a ravine......... Deb – aaaaaaaaagggggggghhhhhhh!!!!!. It was like crossing the Grand Canyon on a rope bridge. There were 2 young girls ahead of us MAKING IT SWAY! We waited till they went and then Mike went ahead of me - but not too far. I did get across cos there was no option but we don’t have a photo cos I wouldn’t let Mike get further than grabbing distance – if ... read more

Day 16 Thursday 5.45 wake up call and then off to the interisland ferry terminal – well that was the idea, but we thought we would be clever and got on to the motorway expecting there to be an exit – but there wasn’t. Plenty of signs for towns north but none for the ferry! Oh well – just as well we left early. The sea was going to be “moderate” but anyone who knows Deb and ferry crossings will know that that word provides no reassurance. Anyway it was calm. The ferry crosses the open sea of the Cook Strait before weaving through many narrow passages to get to Picton. We left Wellington, rounded the corner and then got blasted by gale force winds through the strait. The wind picked up spray and it felt ... read more

Day 14 Tuesday Goodbye Napier! Long but uneventful drive today from Napier to Wellington – a distance of about 320km. Most of it was straight and flat until the last bit which was another Mount Everest and guess whose turn it was to be driving????!!!!!!!! Still I preferred watching the road and Mike enjoyed the apparently breath-taking scenery so it was probably for the best. It got a bit stressy when we got to Wellington cos we found the hotel easily enough but it was a street like Oxford Street – absolutely no where to pull over. It took us another circuit of the city to park behind the hotel and get some advice. Photo of last night’s food (for Oli’s benefit) and wine (read the label) attached but no photos today so you’ll have to ... read more

Day 13 Monday We had read a bit about Napier in the guide books and so knew that there was a bit to see that was “Art Deco”. However, the pre-information did not prepare us for the spectacle we encountered today. It was like going back to the thirties or going on to a film set. All the buildings were built and decorated in Art Deco style. Guides in suitable dress were showing tourists round (a couple of cruise ships had arrived so we just followed a guide book – we were conducting our own tour). You could also have a ride about town in a veteran car. Starting at the Art Deco shop we were soon exploring different buildings, looking at the interiors and the way they were built – all in similar style. The ... read more

Day 12 Sunday Up and off on the road again. Heading for Napier but stopped on the way at Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. A 3 km walk around natural bubbling pools of mud and water. The colours ranged from yellow and green (sulphur) red (ferrous) to purple (manganese). The steam coming off the pools was at times quite suffocating. Arrived at Napier at about 4.30pm and booked into our apartment which includes a kitchenette with washing machine and tumble dryer– joy! We’ve been away 12 days and we were running out of clothes. 3 loads later and we found a great little Turkish cafe to have a meal.
