I can't tell you how much I envy you! I have done a lot of world travel, but most of it was pretty structured. You are so lucky to be able to do what you do. As Mark Twain said: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness." Stay well and the very best to you. No one can take away all that you have seen and learned and it will be with you always. Take lots of pictures (as you have been doing and sharing). Pics are amazing!
about History Thanks for sharing the trip.....just like to say few things regarding Alexander the great,,,,the attrocities attributed to him are incorrect part of History,,,,,suggest reading from reliable sources.
no offence
thanx
nice toilette While surfing in the net, I hit on your blog...Started laughing loud as I saw your toilett-pics in Hotel Tashkent. In February 2007 I 've almost made the same picture....:-P http://img229.imageshack.us/i/img0809o.jpg/ just mirror-invertred..
Iskander Kul Dear Mathias
I browsed your photos with extreme great interest and anxiety when I found it on the web. Fyi, I am doing a research on Alexander the Great and I have also finished scrutinizing all ancient maps and Holy Books of the 3 religions which mentioned Alexander and few ancient travellers' log books including Marco Polo. All the maps shown different places of wall of Gog and Magog and funnily ALL are not plausibile if I cross-check with their respective writers' Holy Book except for 1 writer. In fact, all the location info inside the internet are misleading and not accurate at all. I personally believed that the wall is somewhere in the ranges of where Iskandar Kul is.
My question is, do you have anymore photos, that you can upload here and any other info. about what you saw or hear from the local about this place that could help me. I am planning to go to Uzbek/Tajik in June 2011 for this personal expedition, Of course anyone can join me if they are interested. I need to finalize a bit more on my research
before i go, though I can almost tell on the google earth at which peak it is. Please do not hesitate to contact me shoud at the above email if you have any question. thanx

shared experience the picture of the toilet brings back memories. That is one of the better toilets in Nukus! I also enjoyed the Art gallery. I think I must have been the only person in the entire gallery and so I had a security lady watching my every move throughout the building...Good times!
I'm so happy I found your blog here :)
I can't wait to experience all that by myself.
Some say it's a dream, some say it's a nightmare, I chose the first option and now, I live here in Tajikistan !!
I can't wait the spring to enjoy the best weather and have the same adventures and scenery as you :)

You make Biskek sound better than I heard it is. I wasnt going to spend any time there in September when I go to Kyrgyzstan but now I am tempted to spend a few nights.
Maybe I will skip the night life though. :D
:) Hi, very interesting experiences you had. I am living in Uzbekistan for about two months now as an echange student, but it seems I have experienced a lot less than you. Good luck in your travels, I will keep an eye on your blog :)
Awesome Trip You're my hero. I will do the entirety of the Silk Road trip some day. I am planning to go to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan this summer. Truly a wonderful blog with amazing pictures.
happy new year 2008 Hi matthias, long time since I did not read your adventures in the far far east. I apologyse for that and I appreciated your new stories with bad men and mercedes races. I hope you will come back in one piece. It is always a pleasure to read your lines because I always discover places that I did not know at all.
Good luck on your way and best wishes for this new year (which certainly be the china's year).
Tschüs
hi Hi matthias, I have not read this page yet because it is monday and I must work (beurk). But I hope to do this fast. Just to say hello and to encourage you in your trip.
thanks for the pages and good luck
Wonderful trip! Little brother: Having such a wonderful journey with you. Thank you for letting us vicariously travel and feel this journey with you. Keep us in the journey...maggie
Hard trip So journey in hell it seems. It was a long time I did not read your blog and what I find now : Traveller in troubles ;). Now you can say that you are a survivor. But the last words of your article are very interessant. It is true that sometimes hospitality can bring some difficulties.
hey dude Hi dear friend, I never post comments here but I read your blog religiously (as religiously as my unbeliever genes allow me to). You are an inspiration and I hope our paths will meet again... hopefully in less than 3 years! Enjoy, and keep us posted...
hi And what happens next???? I wait the end of the story fast. Hehe. Perhaps with pictures of you dancing for wedding of other people. A good job I suppose in these far landscapes. (sorry my english is rusty this evening as usual in fact).
explore the unknow world Hi, dear Matthias, happy to see your new steps! there must be a lot of stories along your trip, would like to spend time to share them with you! Adopt by the grandmothers, sounds very interesting, hehe and what is the problem after the bath? hehe I think you can write a attractive book after your trip, just like the funder of LP, Toni and Maureen! hehe
it's very real isn't it :) Hey!
Well, as I read your adventures, it's really after your taste, isn't it? Real and rough!
I'm happy for you and thanks for your post card :)!
After having finished my theoretical studies in France (just the master thesis still has to be written), I am travelling overland to China, my second time already, this time I'm following the Northern Silk Road. I intend to pass the following countries:
Germany - Austria - Slovenia - Croatia - Serbia - Macedonia - Greece - Turkey (maybe a short stay in Georgia) - Iran (I really look forward to see this country)- Turkmenistan (in honor to Turkmenbashi ;-) - Uzbekistan - Tajikistan - Kyrgystan - China (Xinjiang and Tibet, then to Shanghai)
My timetable is quite flexible, but I think that... full info
