Siri ankom derfor Buenos Aires 17. mars for aa passe paa meg resten av turen frem til juli : ) Buenos Aires er en STOR storby med mye trafikk og mennesker. Siri fikk seg dermed en liten periode med "aklimatisering" og tilvenning til mat og kultur! Planlegging av de neste maanedene Foerste dag i Buenos Aires gikk med til aa kikke litt paa videre reiserute og danne oss en grovplan for hva vi vil oppleve og gjoere. El Chalten El Chalten is situated in Parque Nacional Los Glaciares that is considered the greatest single tract of remaining wilderness in the country. It belongs to the Santa Cruz Province, which also El Calafate and the Perito Moreno Glacier are a part of. The park was established in 1937 to protect a unique landscape totally dominated by ice age glaciation. It was declared a Unesco World Heritage in 1982, and your access to the park is controlled and restricted to specific areas. What we climbers know this area for, are the two peaks Cerro Torre (3102) and Mt. Fitzroy (3405). Two peaks that attracts climbers from all over the world. Perito Moreno Glacier The highlight around El Calafate, this windswept part of Argentina, is the Perito Moreno Glacier. It´s located in the Los Glaciares National Park, and it´s an arm from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. This Icefield is the third largest extension of continental ice after Antarctica and Greenland!! It´s 350 km long and has an area of 16 800 km2. Boerge Ousland crossed this ice field in 2003, with Thomas Ulrich. They started in Tortel, Chile, and walked for 54 days down to Puerto Natales. They covered 460 km! This was the first expedition without any after-supplies. The Perito Moreno Glacier is 250 km2, 30 km in lenght and 5 km wide in the front! Travelling north from Ushuaia to Puerto Natales The Magellanes Region I have now travelled north again from Ushuaia. On the way north you have to cross the "Estrecho de Magellanes" which divides Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego from the main land. The Magellanes region is the heart of Chilean Patagonia, rugged, mountainous and stormy. When Magellan came through in 1520, he wasn´t interested in the land, but wanted to find a passage to the Asian spice island. A more significant expedition is the ships "Beagle" and "Adventure" that explored the southern territory for eight years from 1826 to 1834. The Beagle´s second expedition, under the command of Robert Fitz Roy, also brought a young naturalist called Charles Darwin on board. Just some pictures of Tierra del Fuego I arrived in Ushuaia a couple of hours ago, and are now booked in to the hostel. It was a great view on the flight down here and I got a bit eager with the camera. So I just wanted to show you some pictures of the area. I gonna spend the weekend in the city of Ushuaia and probably do some trekking in the park next week. And as you can see on the pictures; it´s a nice part of Argentina/Chile.
