For most of us it was probably an illustration in a book or perhaps a movie. A glimpse of a sandy beach, nodding palm trees and the surf crashing on a reef off shore. There might even have been a black hulled schooner bobbing at anchor…waiting for her next adventure. For the rest of our lives, especially on cold winter days, those images come flooding back when we hear the word “paradise”. Don't despair…I can safely tell you that paradise does exist. It isn’t pristinely pure but it’s all here. The beautiful azure water, the surf pounding on the barrier reef, riots of colorful fish, powdery white sand, palm trees, and the scent of flowers in the air to name just a few of the pleasures. We have visited islands in the last couple of months ... read more

Oh Lord hear our pleas from those in peril on the seas! I never thought I would right those words when talking about our adventures cruising on the seas of the world. What an adventure we have just had in the Tasman Sea. Not the kind of adventure you dream about or even want to experience. A typhoon and a fire! We sailed from Hobart Tasmania on a beautiful evening looking forward to two days at sea headed for Milford Sound in New Zealand. Crossing the Tasman Sea is always a bit of a crap shoot as the weather can change rapidly. The first day was perfect, blue skies, moderate seas and wind. The second day of the crossing was a bit blustery with clouds, a few rain showers and winds gusting to about 25-30mph…nothing ... read more

Rotting on the Beach with Spot the dog. With the constant sound of the trade winds rustling through the palm leaves I didn’t hear the dog walk up behind me. I don't know how long he had been there. I only noticed him when he leaned against my leg. His warm brown fur tickled my leg as he slowly sank to the sand…sound asleep. I knew how he felt. There is seductiveness to the South Pacific Islands that fills the senses with color and softness and fragrance and an overwhelming desire to linger. We had come ashore at Christmas Island (South of Hawaii, part of the Republic of Kiribati) filled with plans for exploring, snorkeling and photography. What we found was a reef fringed atoll surrounded by intense azure water and an ancient island ... read more

Approaching Kiritimati Island, South Pacific I'm going to tell you a story today that may not resonate with those of you who haven't been on a cruise ship before. If you have cruised then this story will either bring a smile to your face or raise your blood pressure to dangerous levels. I'm talking about The Launderette. For reasons lost in the mists of maritime antiquity the cruise lines feel a need to put a small launderette aboard for the convenience of the passengers. Usually there is one such launderette on the ship, sometimes one on each deck but in the end there are never enough. The only thing that could possibly cause more anger, frustration, violence, argument and strife would be if the ship was boarded by pirates. On this ship there are four ... read more

It seems there was some sort of system glitch and everyone received a posting with tons of code at the top. My apologies for that. Hopefully this is fixed now. Here is the original post: Connie and I sailed from Los Angeles Friday night on what promises to be our longest time at sea ever. We get home on the 13th of March after five cruises, two ships and countless islands. In the process we visit Hawaii, Tahiti, the Marquesas, Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, Indonesia and Singapore. Our first ship is Oceania’s Regatta for a back to back ending in Tahiti and then we join Regent’s Voyager in Sydney for three cruises. Christmas will be in Hawaii which will be our first time away from home in many years for the Holidays. The ship is already ... read more

Eight thousand years! Humans have lived on this spot for eight thousand years. This thought kept running through my mind as I sat on the roof top terrace of our hotel in Istanbul. Below, the Bosphorus shimmered like buffed silver. Across the water Asia disappeared into the gloom of night. The setting sun brushed the clouds with pink, softening the breathtaking outline of the Blue Mosque on the hill above. I could well understand why we humans had chosen this spot so early in our history. We came to Istanbul three days early because we enjoy this city with its bustling streets, colorful energetic markets and charming people. And especially for the shopping…a theatrical experience as old as the city itself. Whether you are interested in rugs, jewelry, leather or purses the shopping here will challenge ... read more
