So here we are, New Zealand. A country steeped in natural beauty, blue skies becoming overcast becoming snow, hot chocolates and coffee and a whole lot of sleeping in a car. Here are a few of the things we’ve been upto. After arriving in Christchurch after what was probably the best flight of my life - incredibly smooth and the view over New Zealand was astounding, we spent the first few nights in Christchurch - getting incredibly cold and so buying thermal layers, jumpers, waterproofs and thick woollen socks before returning to our hostel room complete with electric blanket - a very nice addition! Christchurch was ok, but for a city didn’t seem particularly happening, and it rained freezing cold rain a fair bit so we didn’t see it in the best light. After 3 nights ... read more

Before you start this, I think I should tell you that maybe we should have split it over a few blogs... being as its 3,650 words long... so take your time, relax, have a cup of strong black coffee to keep you awake... and maybe make another one half way through and enjoy finding out about our adventures in the land of Oz... We arrived in Perth, somewhat jaded and almost keeled over at how expensive bacon and eggs were. Spent the day recovering at Mike’s, our first couch surfing experience, which turned out perfect as he had to work all day so left us to fall asleep to the background sound of wall-e. Spotted some Ibis and saw Milk at the cinema. Next day we couchsurfed in Freo, where a B52’S themed party took place ... read more

The end of Asia...

Ok, so we're a little behind - have been in Oz for almost 7 weeks.... but here's our adventure up until our flight to Perth.... the rest will follow...err....soon! So we come to our final few weeks in Asia. After a nice few days on Langkawi, enjoying the good weather, our own cooked food and plenty of wildlife, we caught a boat to Penang for Chinese New Year. Maybe we should have researched a little more into it - I only got as far as “Penang has the highest concentration of Chinese in Malaysia so is the best place to experience Chinese New Year celebrations”. What I should have found out is that the first 5 days of CNY and a few days leading up to it everything shuts down and is all about Chinese repaying ... read more

After another sleepless night on the train (we’ve had a few!) we arrived in Surat Thani, weary and aching. Luckily we found a decent hotel with a good mattress for £7 a night, so we checked in and slept... For 2 days! Feeling slightly more rested we continued with our journey and got a minibus to Khao Sok national Park. Signed up for a 2day and 1night camping in the rainforest, spent one day at the guesthouse seeing a multitude of frogs and lizards - including gliding lizards which soared past us a couple of times! Had a good meal at the guesthouse then played Jenga against the man who would be our guide for our camping trip, and who apparently never lost at Jenga - Sexyman. We beat him 2 out of 3 games! The ... read more

I would like to start with an apology - I wrote most of this blog on Christmas Eve, but due to an unfortunate turn of events I lost the memory stick that it was saved to somewhere in a river in Laos! I know that was a month ago, and we should have published it since then, but we wanted to catch up. Well we finally.... haven't still - but this includes returning to Bangkok now and we will try to get up to date very soon! Thanks for listening... After our long bus trip we arrived just off Khao San Road. We looked at 3 hotels, chose an ok room with hot shower for 700 baht and went for some kebabs and mango shake. The road was buzzing with life and backpackers but apart from ... read more

The Okay Guesthouse centred around a covered outdoor dining area, always teeming with travellers and smelling a little like a cow shed. They were fully booked and I suppose that’s why our “twin room” was at the buildings highest point, past a few mattresses and piles of laundry, having a small bed and single pillow. ‘Peter’ led the way, a friendly guy. The room wasn’t entirely walled either, but still we slept well- despite the staff radio alarm outside our door, and the best replacement pillow the staff could muster being a hard cushion. An army of tuktuk drivers lay in wait at the dining area, and would come and chat to you while you ate. Peter turned out to be a tuktuk driver, high fiving me and slapping me on the shoulder each time I ... read more

After an enjoyable couple of days in Saigon, it was time to move on... again. We booked a budget tour from Saigon to Phnom Penh, Cambodia for 3 days and 3 nights. There were about 30 people on the trip so more than we would like, but the tour was cheap, and for what we paid good value for money! We did a couple of trips on the Mekong river, the scenery was beautiful and many children were shouting “hello!” and waving along the river banks. We visited 2 floating markets - the first one we arrived about midday and there was actually nothing left, but we were shown where the market would have been if we had arrived 6 hours earlier! The second we got to about 8am and there were still a few boats ... read more

Saigon was great. We stayed in two hotels, only one night in "Kim's" largely because the hotel we were being over charged and they had somehow blocked access to their own website, so in order to prove it I had to use Googles saved cache, something kim(?) didn't like. "Lyly" was much cheaper, not as nice nut friendly staff. Saigon had a great atmosphere to it, and it was here that we found the''banana cafe' a small stall/shop that specialised in fruit shakes- the mango shake was about 40p, used a whole mango and was the best we've yet tasted. I tasted at least 4. The War Reminants museum was harrowing, especially the detailed explainations of torture used in the 'tiger cages' and the wake of Agent Orange, not to mention the massacres. The gallery with ... read more

The train to Da Nang was amazing- We had hard sleeper tickets- the only way to travel, although there they really are hard sleepers- just a wooden shelf and a sheet. Spectacular rocky views of the coast, and fellow passengers who weren't from Minsk, sweetened the deal considerably. Hannah did get a lttle nervous, largely because I said "Ï hope it doesn't tip over". Nevertheless we arrived in sunny Da Nang and took a car to Hoi An, a coastal town with an ancient village, a japanese bridge, amazing beach with great seafood resaurants and all the tailors you could ever want. We spent 5 days there, felt like we needed a small holiday from travelling- as the constant moving was stating to wear on us. The beach was long and the waves high, not suitable ... read more

After arriving from Ninh Binh by coach, late into the night, we spent one night in a dusty hotel, where breakfast consisted of sitting at a table eating bad food whilst being plagued by the staff. They really wanted you to sign up for a tour through them, and between mouthfuls of stodgy food we took turns in declining their offers. Then we ran the gauntlet of getting outside where one guy was convinced we needed a motorbike ride. The town itself was pretty dusty and uninteresting, just on the edge of a boom though. Tam Coc, it's caves and the national park being Ninh Binh's only draw, which most people would come see on a round trip from Hanoi anyway. So we hired a driver and went to Cuc Phoung National Park! The park was ... read more
