Sorry folks, I must apologize for the brief hiatus from blog entry... internet acces in eastern and most of southern Africa is absolutely shite and you pay a small fortune for it! So we arrive in Dar-es-Salam at rush hour and i swear to all the gods, whomever and where ever they are, that if they get us through this town in less than 4 hours, i will never complain about traffic in Dublin ever again! To help the time pass, we pumped up the volume and conducted our very own dance party in the back of the truck- only a few mohitos were missing! To make our visit to Dar more entertaining- the local children danced alongside our truck- it was precious and they showed us a step or two. I love to see children ... read more

My little Ralfi has left me to brave the big bad bush of Africa one me own... along with 15 strangers. Sounds the the beginning of a new reality show. This over-land tour thing is going to take some getting used to . Driving all day, pitching the tent in the dark, washing clothes in the shower, and forever being dusty and dirty. I'm getting used to the constantly smelling bit!... except for the last day of the Kili trek, when opening my sleeping bag, my own stink nearly knocked me out. I lucked out with my travel companions; we're a mostly like-minded group of Kiwis, Micks, Brits, Aussies, Yanks, Kanooks, Poles, and Spaniards. Everything has been going very fast in the first week of my 6 week Kenya to Cape Town tour. We spent 2 ... read more

Welcome back folks, Our next adveture is Mombasa to Moshi (base town for Kilimanjaro treks) by bus and then to Mount Kilmanjaro. The bus journey was the ride of a lifetime! The 1st 4 hours were nice and easy, just a few stops by the Kenyan Police who had set up a toll in the middle of no where when suddenly the road ended and the next 4 hours were spent holding on for dear life dodging potholes and speed bumps (why one requires speed bumps on a dirt road is beyond me). The holding on for dear life was somewhat of a problem for me as I had the window seat and the window was only attach at the bottom. I didn't know if I should be holding the window to the bus or to ... read more

This would be a really cool town if not for the touts and prostitutes. Ralf and I went to a budget beach resort mainly because everything else was booked out, but also with the hopes of enjoying the sun and sea. Only a few sparse clouds blocked us from the sun but between us and the sea... lets just say one of the 'city tour / safari' guys followed us into the water. That wasn't the worst of it! Like vampires, touts and hookers are not allowed on the hotel property unless invited, meaning you could still enjoy the sun as the hotel has deck chairs and a pool elevated from the beach. The most horrendous part of this was the old, fat Europeans we had to witness in ill-fitting bikinis and speedos. I vomit a ... read more

I am still in Dublin... I leave tomorrow afternoon to begin my half world tour. At the moment I'm not anxious, stressed, nervous, excited, nothing, I'm a little angry but I don't know where that is coming from. I feel like tomorrow is just another day. The planning of this tour has taken so much out of me that I don't even know how I'm going to enjoy it. My God, I'm climbing Mount Kilimanjaro next week, what the hell was I thinking when I booked that! I'm going to spend 42 days on a bus... and sleep in a tent for most of it. I get back pain from sleeping in Ralf's bed- how am I going to manage 6 weeks on the ground only to start all over again in South America! Oi!!!!! I ... read more

Well, Folks, prepare yourselves for the ride of a lifetime... at least I hope so :) This is the first of many entries! I am preparing for departure which is just over a week away. In that time I have to: get a Kenyan Visa, go to the tailor, collect the drycleaning, book flights to Joburg, Rio, Lima, and home, book accommodations for all the nights not spent on tour (excluding the luxury tent in Nairobi and the Spa Hotel in Cape Town), book tour in South America, get money to pay for all this, get a load of USD, pack up my room, move to Leitrim, pack my bags, and try to enjoy my last few days in Dublin... Can anyone think of anything else I have to do?! Thus far, my tour entails: January- ... read more
