Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice August 29th 2012

Our first tour in Venice was the Escursioni alle Isole or "Excusion of the Islands." We met up with our tour guide at around 9:30 in the morning before heading out onto the Bacino di S. Marco. The first island we stopped at was Murano which took about 40 minutes to travel to by boat. Murano is famous for the art of glass blowing and the pieces made there are sold all over Venice. We were given a short, but very impressive, presentation in the glass workshop. The glassmith first showed everyone how he creates a small vase and then (extrememly quickly) moulds a glass horse. The time it took for him to shape the horse with all of the detail was less than a minute! Avery managed to get a video on her camera. We ... read more

Another travel day as we moved from Florence to Venice. Our train ride wasn't so dramatic this time around but Emily did have a small encounter with an intoxicated homeless man wandering around the station. On the train we sat next to a couple from Burlington who told us that they were originally from Ottawa. They said that they were coming from Rome but were happy to go to Venice because it was soo hot there. For us, the worst heat was in Barcelona and Positano. We would step outside of the hotel and drip sweat. Venice is about 27 degrees but it is cooler because we are right by the water. When we arrived at the train station in Venice we were told to take a water taxi that would take us to the front ... read more

As it was our final day in Florence we set out after breakfast with a long to do list. We wanted to make a number of stops at different attractions and get as much shopping done as possible. Fortunately, everything in Florence is within walking distance so we were able to accomplish almost everything. The only disappointment was the gardens which we planned to see after dinner. When I looked up the hours of operation it was actually closed on Mondays. We did however, get to see the Palazzo della Signoria home of the Renaissance sculpture David created by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504. As well as the Ponte Vecchio or "Old Bridge" that extends over the Arno River. After a little sightseeing we did a lot of shopping. Florence is known for its leather which ... read more

Today we got to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa! The tour was only set for the afternoon however, so we had the morning to do a little exploring. It was the first day it actually rained. We were told that in Positano it had not rained since April! Our tour guide later told us that everyone here is happy because it may have saved the olive crops that will be harvested in late October. After breakfast it stopped raining and we decided to take a walk through the streets of Florence to check out some of the stores. Our main stop was the Piazza del Duo mo where we took some pictures of the beautiful buildings. We left Florence for Pisa in the afternoon with an organized tour bus. The bus ride to Pisa is ... read more

I knew leaving Positano was a bad idea. I wanted to cry as we stood for the last time on our beautiful hotel terrace. The ride back down the mountain was depressing and just when we thought the train would be our favorite mode of transportation, disaster struck. We all knew navigating our way through the Naples train station would not be pleasant but the people there are soooooo frustrating. It was worse than the beach in Barcelona. Every two seconds we were being harassed for money by people both selling items or just straight out demanding it. When we finally found out platform we were confused where to get on the train. A little old man we thought was working at the station showed us where to get on and helped Avery and Emily carry ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Positano August 24th 2012

Another relaxing beach day today. There are two beach in Positano, one is more popular than the other as it is close to the main city centre with all of the shops and restaurants. Antonio, our concierge at the hotel told us to go to the second beach as the hotel also has an "agreement" and the chairs are cheaper to rent. The water was amazing. It was like nothing I have ever seen. Definitely more beautiful than the beach in Barcelona and much less crowed. I wish we could have stayed a couple more days just to be at the beach. I like sightseeing but I think the beach there was one of my favorite parts of the trip so far even though Anacapri and Capri were amazing. Plus the food at the restaurant was ... read more

Capri and Ana Capri tours today!!! I'm sorry this is taking me so long to write but so much happened that I could probably write a book about it. I will try not to go into too much detail because the pictures will speak for themselves. The tour was probably one of the most amazing ventures for all of us. I'm not one for big crowds and being herded like caddle through tiny street packed with busses BUT it was worth it because everything about the tour was spectactular. We started off on an insnaely early/terrifying cab ride down the mountain side to the city of Sorrento. Sorrento is definitely more spacioius than Positano but its not as high so the view is no where near beautiful. We were also told that Sorrento has an exciting ... read more

Another early morning as we flew from Barcelona to Naples, Italy. We were picked up at the Naples Airport and driven to Positano on the Amalfi Coast. It was the most amazing experience. Ill admit a little terrifying, as from my window I was looking straight down into the ocean with all but a small wall between the car and the cliff. Not to mention that drivers here are crazy and there are no sidewalks whatsoever. People practically walk in the middle of the tiny streets that run through the city. We managed to get out and walk around without to much difficulty. We found a grocery store close by where we can buy meats, cheeses, bread, wine and fresh local fruit. The food so far has been Italian and sooo tasty. The best part is ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona » La Rambla August 21st 2012

Today was supposed to be more sighseeing but we ran into a few issues. First off Emily got serious sun stroke from the beach yesterday. The heat is insane here. I don't feel like eating sometimes just because it is so hot. She decided to stay in the air conditioning for the beginning of the day. Avery and I started out with the intention of seeing another cathedral, however we forgot to bring clothing to cover our shoulders. We didn't have that problem yesterday so we didn't think to pack a sweater or something. Regardless, we took a lot of pictures of the buildings and statues outside of the building. In the afternoon Emily was feeling better so we all went shopping together in La Rambla and then out for dinner. We are looking forward to ... read more

First off I just want to note that I did not post all of the pictures from yesterday. I wanted to but there were over 100 and the internet here is not so great. The hotel offers free wi-fi however it is not password protected and the signal is very low. Everything is soooo slow. I also wanted to write captions/descriptions so I could describe at least the cathedral and park Guell but it was one in the morning so I gave up. I will try again later. Today was our beach day. We decided to only bring one camera and as Avery's in the nicest she took all of the pictures. It was the perfect day for the beach too. Lots of sun! We all came back with some kind of sun burn even though ... read more
