HRKHRK - hi

hi WanderLust -- the documentary of my travels, and crazy day-to-day life in various places around the globle.

Things without which life would just be less fun:
real (snail) mail par avion, LAVENDER (for food, par-fume, and viewing), the first: snowfall-blossoms-90degreeday-turningleaves of the year (though I would not be opposed to taking a plane to see all of these if I lived in perpetual warmth), FondaFarrellLauraKiren, red wine, James Scott Vince Charles Michael, Politics, languages, leadership development, sushi, Cilantro!, restaurant research, microbrews, HONESTY, Paris, my family, cookware, chess, wrapping gifts, prayer, holding hands, Mediterranean men, cheap flights, Thailand, laughing, Elise, NPR, a great cup of coffee, the arts, persimmons, languages, London, Oxford (OH), champagne brunch (at the peninsula, in HK, preferably), salts and honey, pomegranates, lychees, avocados, good cheese, baking (from scratch), the perfect dress, SMILING, learning, soy milk lattes, Italy, Moet, the Buckeyes, new music finds, (Mother) Mary, ten-keys, traveling, talking till the sun comes up, new friends, English breakfast, Sakura season, reading, uni et natto, new adventures, Lush circa 2003, anthropologie (yes, -ie), various teas, curries, readingreadingreading, Anne, independent music & films, planning trips, Persian food et culture, uncertainty, yoga, squirrel/chipmunk/Eskimo/butterfly kisses, can I say (cooking) knives without sounding creepy?, Williams-Sonoma, India, Excel, Ethiopian food, chopsticks, cross trainers, cross country adventures, long train rides (sans the chinese military), *NEW ADVENTURES*, jumpinghoppingskipping, momo no hana, Columbus, calla lilies, midnight talks en whispers, woody allen, crafts, life long friends, flower arranging, ginger and green tea, kaiten, ***yaki neku*no really*i LOVE yaki neku***, making /eating salsa/guac, buying and wrapping the perfect present, RECIPES, playing detective, international relations, my kitchenaidstandmixer, New York, taking classes(!), playing night owl and early bird, dance and twirl breaks, Kate Nicky Julie et Caity, creative uses for household miso, christmas tunes, lingering hugs, y lastly, long walks.

I abhor: yelly music, burning sauces, washing dishes, makeshift capris, when flower petals litter the floor of my apartment, et holes my knitting.

I love: the crazy gift of LIFE!

The fourteen hour flight flew by, as I was sitting next to an entertaining gentleman from Mexico City, and had 80 movies from which to choose on the air TV. Soon, I was on the ground in Auckland, where the bags provided me little trouble. I caught a shuttle to the city, and arrived safely at my hostel by 7:30am. Though I had slept only three hours on the flight, I was ready for the day - I booked bungee jumping, checked out some of the local museums, went to the fish market and cooking school, got a feel for the [View Full Entry]

Lost in LA North America
Hi everyone! (I’ll start to address these to only my family as my “trip” drags on and I’m forgotten ;) After the trouble Michael Lottes and I went through with my Euro-baggage from the Netherlands to Barcelona, everywhere in between, and back again, someone should have slapped me when I said I was going to drag three massive bags through New Zealand and Australia. I know I’ll be happy to have most of my clothes/shoes/kitchen knives, but as I bargained with the shuttle driver about whether or not my large (30kg) duffle constituted as a carry-on (for a five dolla [View Full Entry]

I am just going to recap (if nothing else, for my own personal memory) my trip with Anne in 2009. Anne, as many of you know, came to visit me for about a month in Japan. There, we also had our thrown down moments, notably when I almost threw Anne down Mt. Fuji when she refused to climb any further (25 minutes into climbing). This trip too, we had breaking points. We started the trip by visiting our middle sister, Elise, in Dayton, Ohio. I chose to sleep for only two hours, so Anne drove us to Columbus, Indiana, the number [View Full Entry]

Well, it seems to me that when they hand you a driver’s license in Hanoi (and all of Vietnam for that matter), they make you PLEDGE to make as much noise as humanly possible, including, but not limited: honking, yelling, beeping, and cursing under your breath. This is only a hypothesis, but I am sure given further investigation that others would also corroborate this information. (This is, however, much better than the traffic situation in Xi'an, where someone was shot outside my hostel in a driving dispute an hour after I checked out.) I had a lot of clothes tailor-made in [View Full Entry]

Thailand, for me, was a dream destination. I did so much there, it is going to be hard to write about it after the fact (it was too hard to pause while there to write about it in real-time). I am just going to write about Chiang Mai right now. I went to Ayutthaya (A-YU-T-TA) from Bangkok for the day, and I planned on taking the night bus to Chiang Mai (in the north of Thailand). However, it is impossible to pre-book your bus, you have to wait in until the bus arrives a the station, see if there are empty [View Full Entry]

Bangkok, take one Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok
I arrived in Bangkok at 1am. Luckily, I made some friends in the Philippines, one of whom spoke Thai, and got me to my hotel safe and sound. I have been staying at the Atlanta Hotel, which is almost a Bangkok landmark, as the lobby has not been changed in forever. It has a pool, though I haven’t yet used it, and it’s near little Arabia. The staff is really helpful, etc. I am happy I decided to stay here. The first thing I did in the morning was find a reputable tailor, and paid them a visit [View Full Entry]

I got up around 6am with hopes of catching the train to Kanchanaburi, where I had planned to visit a Tiger Temple. The monks at this temple were brought wounded animals and learned how to care for them. The third generation of the tigers will be released into the wild. I had read about this temple in a couple different magazines, and despite that some people think that the tigers are drugged, I decided to go. (I read too many more-credible places that the tigers are not drugged, plus, it’s a monestary, and the 'white tablets' that people see the tigers [View Full Entry]

For now, I am foregoing the rest of China to tell you about the Philippines. I went to Taal Volcano, which is the largest island within a lake on an island within a lake on an island. I know this is hard to imagine, but until I post my pictures, [url=http://images.google.co.th/imgres?imgurl=http://www.camperspoint.com/IMG/jpg/taal_volcano_4.0.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.camperspoint.com/article.php3%3Fid_article%3D16&h=225&w=300&sz=51&hl=en&start=13&um=1&tbnid=7dy_EboGHKf3bM:&tbnh=87&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dtaal%2Bvolcano%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DX/] check this out [View Full Entry]

Slow boat to China Asia » China » Tianjin
Oh, the ferry story... I was supposed to wake up at 7am. I was all planned and ready to take a shower and ship out. However, when woke up in the morning I realized that I had overslept. My co-teacher in Japan, Kerin, bought me a really cool alarm clock, which I foolishly thought was clicked to 'on,' when in fact it was plainly still in the off position. Whoops! I pulled on my pants, forgot 17 things, and ran to the metro station. En route, I began to wonder if metro was the safest (fastest) way to get to the [View Full Entry]
