Lhasa to Chengdu - High Altitude Trains Having missed our original train to Chengdu we had to wait another 4 days for the next one to carry us out of Lhasa. Not a big problem as there are floods in China and we really like Lhasa. This is no ordinary train and is a marvel of engineering. Its the highest train in the world and has an average height of 4000m, topping out at 5072m. Completed in 2006 the track is built on permafrost. All the pylons have a cooling system within them to keep the ground below them frozen throughout the year. Preventing the track from buckling in summer! Construction of the line between Lhasa and Golmond required 160km of bridges and elevated track, seven tunnels, and 24 hyperbaric chambers to treat altitude sick workers. ... read more

Lhasa - The Forbidden City Day 19 - Lhasa Rest Day and a well deserved watering We woke up after a much needed rest, and pigged out in the buffet style breakfast in the hotel...eggs made to order and crispy bacon...what better way to start the day! Exhausted, and with a lovely bathroom at my disposal, I stayed behind to ablute while Guy went off exploring. He returned beeming a few hours later having completed a kora of the Potala palace, and bringing fresh yak yoghuort and goodies from a lovely bakery. We dozed and caught up with world events on the news channel before heading out to dinner and drinks with our Everest friend Roy and his guide. After several beers, and lots of great conversation, and very full tummies we ran home through bucketing ... read more

h2) Mt Everest Base Camp - EBC (5150m) to Gyantse, Shigatse and Lhasa Day 15 - Saga to Old Tingri, Peiku-Tso and Everest Base Camp Leaving early to beat the last of the road blocks we had a quick set of dumplings for breakfast. Back on the rough terrain we left the reserve and were only a few kilometres from it when we burst a tyre in spectacular fashion. All four of us stared at each other in disbelief. Realising we had 2 spares on board, we set to fixing the situation. However being in the desert, the Jack would not lift the car and stones in sand dunes are hard to come by. An hour or two later and problem solved we made our way to back to the friendship highway. We stopped for a ... read more

Mt Kailash Kora/Parikarma to Saga Day 11 - Darchen to Dira Phuk (5050m) Dhondup woke early to secure yet another permit we required to walk around the mountain. Heading off a little nervous (so was Dhondup) we met our two porters. 2 young and serverely underdressed Tibetans from Shigatse. Talking to a few guides we learnt that there have been 7 deaths on the mountain this year so far (All Indian pilgrims) and the trekking season has only been going for 2 months. The Kora around the mountain (Asia's holiest) is a 3 day walk with a 5600m pass at the far end. Its this pass that proves the most difficult and there is no help availible should anything go wrong. The first days walk (24km) was a relatively easy one ascending slowly to Dira Phuk ... read more

Guge Kingdom to Darchen via Rutok Monastery Day 8 - Tholing Zanda to Ali (4280m) Packed racked and ready to go after another portion of pork dumplings for breakfast, we began the 6 hour, 200km drive to Ali. Following the Sutlij river past the Guge kingdom and turned north back into the clay canyons. The canyons and valleys were broken with the odd village. The road zig-zagged up and over 3 high passes. Ayi-La (5167m), Zongchung-La (5076m) and Lalung -La (5300m). From the passes we could see Nandi Devi, Indias highest mountain. We entered the Gar valley flat as can be and passed the newly constructed airport. (Soon this will be a far easier way to access the far reaches of western Tibet). Once in the valley we joined the tarred road, a compete result for ... read more

Chiu Village to Tholing Zanda (3650m) & The Guge Kingdom Day 6 - Chiu Village to Tholing Zanda (Tsaparang) Another early morning start and as we loaded the jeep we bid farewell to the quaint village with its beautiful lakeside setting and headed to the somewhat less picturesque town of Darchen for a breakfast of spicey noodles and coffee (not a combo to be recommended). The briefest of trips to one of Tibet's worst toilets and we were finally set for the long drive to the little frequented Guge Kingdom. We were warned about the lack of tarred road in this area, but dodging roadworks , trucks and cement mixers high on mountain passes proved more of an adventure than we'd bargained for, we clung on for dear life!! All the hardships of this stretch paled ... read more

Kathmandu to Lake Manasarovar Day 1- Kathmandu (1300m) to Zhangmu (2250m) via Kodari The alarm kicked us out of bed at 4:45am to meet Suraj, our Nepalese guide/escort to the border. A big world cup match the night before meant the driver of our vehicle never arrived due to a severe hang over. Suraj in guiding mode organised a 3L Nissan to swing round at last miuntes notice. Suraj, a guide for many years and speaking near perfect english gave us a running commentary of every town, village, valley and strange thing we came across. He pointed out jungle honey bees' nests from an alarming distance, and ensured we stoped at every point of interest. Including the Bunji Jump at the last resort that GP, Skunk and I launched ourselves off only a week earlier. (Suraj ... read more

Organising an Overland Trip to Tibet from Kathmandu When we got to Kathmandu and wanted to book an overland trip to Tibet we were a little confused by all the agents and bad stories we had heard from other travelers. We have decided to add this entry to help others. However we are not a guide book and will just let you know what we did and how it turned out. We had a great time and loved our 35 days in Tibet. Please read our other entries to see what we got up to. This entry is more from a practical perspective to help you before you go. Chosing a Travel Agent in Kathmandu & Costs We spent a week in Thamel and Boudanath chatting to agents and giving them our itinerary. We found it ... read more

Our chosen Travel Agent to Tibet - Gorkha International Travels (P.) Ltd. Overland by Landcruiser - organised by Gokul Adhikari Liff, GP and I begun the week long task of organising a bespoke trip into Tibet. We ploughed through the mountains of information, books and suggestions we had received form other travelers. Eventually we produced a clear brief of the trip, specifications for vehicles, Monasterie's we wanted to visit and Treks to be included. (and even how many Yaks we would require while completing a Kora circuit of Mt Kailash) Armed with our Itinerary we began trawling the travel agents of both Thamel and Boudanath to find a tour agent we trusted and that could offer us the bare basics at an affordable price. We approached, Trekking Team, Eco Trek, Responsible Treks, Tibet International Tours and ... read more

Happy Birthday to me! With Liff heading back to London to celebrate Bubbles and Kevin's union, I was left to celebrate my birthday in Kathmandu. (So I will be the author of this entry -for a change) The birthday celebrations kicked off early. To our surprise it was Mt Everest day and the street was in full party mode by 8am..... a ready made party, sweet! Sadly this was the day we said goodbye to Rosie, Clare, Ling and Annie. Ling and Annie set off early for their flight. (guys, thanks for traveling with us, it was a real pleasure and a time we will never forget) GP and I made our way to the airport with Rosie and Clare, sad to see you leave too. (Hope your having a wicked time in India, keep us ... read more
