Our primary motivation for visiting China was to see the Great Wall. We were not dissapointed! Our tour group only allowed a two hour hike. The weather was perfect the memory forever! They are constantly repairing the 4,000 miles of wall and it is no small task, but neither was building it. The walll is earthen and supported by stones on the outside with stone guard towers. The middle section can be 20 yards wide and the walking surface is a combination of steps and sloped walkways. There is nothing uniform about the wall. The steps vary in height and depth and the coming down is much harder than going up. The elevation is 3,500 feet so breathing can taxing. It is mostly uphill. We visited Ming's Tomb after the wall. The tomb was nothing but ... read more

Bejing is an amazing place - the sheer size, all the culture, and history. Tianamen Square (11 football fields large) and the Forbidden city are amazint!. This was an organized tour however, on a couple days we left the group, took the subways and taxis to visit more sites and be on our own time schedule. Maybe no more organized tours? We saw the Pandas at the zoo. They were so playful and so many of them because of the on coming olympics. The Olympic grounds were not open to the public, still putting on the finishing touches, However, we did see from the outside on the tour bus, the Birds Nest and the aquatic center were impressive. Albert, our tour guide, told us China likes to have everything bigger and better!... read more

This was an unexpected treat. We did not realize how much we would enjoy this part of the tour. Xian is an old walled city (considered old China). Many evening we stationed ourselves in the local park where we enjoyed watching the locals socializing with their families in toe. They also had light and water shows in the park. There is a large Muslim population in Xian. They have an incredible bazaar. There are also very large multi story shopping centers. The archealogical site of the terra cotta soldiers was much more immense than we thought it would be. On the way back to our hotel from this site we visited a local school for the farmers´children in the area and a local farm.... read more

Asia » China » Shanghai June 11th 2008

Shanghai is a large industrial city - not our favorite. The bund, which is the banks of the river flowing thru the center, is full of street vendors. We viewed many large, modern buildings while walking along the bund dodging agrresive vendors! The French Quarter was a fun part of Shanhai to stroll through and have lunch. One evening we had a great dinner at a Tibetan Restaurant with another couple on the tour whose son was living and working in Shanghai. This place was complete with the wait staff in Monks Robes - a very fun and memorable evening. The other highlight was riding the Meg Lev Train - 20 miles in 7 minutes!!! It takes you from the city center to the airport. When the 2 trains pass, each traveling at 250+ MPH, everything ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon June 10th 2008

Hong Kong was our first stop in China. The phrase constanly used - one country two systems. We enjoyed this city touring Victoria Peak and downtown Hong Kong. Our favorite excursions were when we went off on our own to Lanuau Island to see the largest sitting Buddah in the world and when we took a Hydro Foil to Macau. Macau is like stepping into Portugal (architecture) with Chinese people! It is the gambling capital of China with many large casinos like Vegas. ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi February 15th 2008

We arrived in Hanoi, a fast paced, urban city. The highlight in this area was spending time on Halong Bay. We had a relaxing and beautiful scenic time cruising around the bay on a Chinese junk. At one point we got off board and spent a couple hours hiking through Awsome caves. The weather was great, big plus since we had so much rain in Hoi An and Natrang. Hanoi is large and noisy like Saigon but there is a different feel. There are more cars and there is more infrastrure work and not as many factories being built. The traffic here is just as crazy with the roads being shared by ox pulled carts to Mercedes Benz SUV's. The wealth is more in the north and there is more Government and Military. We never felt ... read more

This was our 2nd stop after leaving the Mekong Delta. We went to Natrang on the coast The weather was wet and windy so the beaches were not inviting. We flew into the old US military base in Danang and toured China Beach before going to Hoi An. This provided us a great look at the everyday life of the Vietnamese. Leaving Hoi An, our next stop was the city of Dalat at 5,000 feet elevation in a pine forest. The air here was so clean and fresh. The weather was brisk but lots of blue sky and sunshine. Bill played a round of golf at the oldest course in Vietnam, Dalat Palace Course. Next stop was Hue the original capitol of Vietnam where we had a fun time bicycling around the city with the locals. ... read more

We toured Vietnam with a local group from Vancouver, WA., Feb. 2009. This was our tour guide's first tour in this country. There were a few mix-ups and bumps along the way! However, the beautiful country of Vietnam, the friendly Vietnamese people, and our fun traveling group more than made up for this. We started in Ho Chi Mingh City (Saigon) and finished in Hanoi. The floating market on the Mekong River is the real commerce of this region of the country. Mary had visited Thailand with this same group two years earlier and the floating markets there were staged for the tourists. Not so in Vietnam! This was the real thing. Notice something hanging from the flag pole? This is the way they advertise what they are selling. How simple and efficient is that!... read more

Winters are spent in Arizona, actually Verrado, a planned family community with schools and a central town square. We chose to have our 2nd home here because of the community. It is everything and more than we expected. We have made many friends and friends and family have visited. We enjoy some in the White Tank Mountains. The most ambitious hike was with our son, Marc, hiking Camelback in Scottsdale. We really enjoy our time here since it feels like we´re on vacation all the time! Our place is small with not much up keep. This leaves time for socializing, golf, fitness club, hikes and the constant sunshine!... read more
