Motorhome News from New Zealand 3 20th October 2008 Across the Cook Strait to South Island That's how it was when Nick Young looked out from the crow's nest of the good ship Endeavour, back in 1769. 'Land Ahoy!' he called, pointing out to the west. When Captain Cook cuffed the telescope to his eye he would have seen a narrow band of grey-brown, lifting and broadening on the horizon above the swell, a band of rugged cliffs, ever browner, ever greener, sunlight sharpening the ragged peaks against the Pacific sky. It was our first view of New Zealand from the sea, leaving North Island from Wellington on the Interisland Ferry, leaving behind the last remnants of habitation, the gleaming white wooden houses perched on hillsides fading into the distance, as stark brown hills rise from ... read more

Motorhome News from New Zealand 2 10th October 2008 Motorhoming through Tauranga, Rotorua, Opotiki, Gisborne and Napier to Wellington, We didn't expect any frills with our rented motorhome. The price was keen; booked from a UK agent over the internet some months ago, but 'Lizzie', as our six-metre long new home is affectionately called, has been good to us since we collected it from Auckland Airport. Lizzie is a bit basic as motorhomes go, but solid - as a rental machine needs to be. Weighing in at around 3 tonnes all up, we can achieve speeds of 80 kph or more in downhill mode - which suits our nomadic purpose fine! In order to give us the space we need for our ten-week journey we chose a four berth motorhome to make sure we had a ... read more

Motorhome News from New Zealand 1 30th September 2008 Kia-ora. Welcome to New Zealand. They tell us it's been a hard winter here on New Zealand's North Island, with continuous rain throughout July and August; much akin to that for the same months of summer in the UK. But suddenly, as the nights draw in and the prospect of winter approaches back home, we're transported in time - to Spring in New Zealand. Maybe we're just dreaming. Our flight approach into Auckland turned to starboard from the north, drawing us into the city in dazzling sunlight above jigsaw edged green fields dotted with cows, set against the brilliant blue of the Tasman Sea. Welcome indeed. Customs clearance and immigration in contrast was surly, unfriendly and clearly bored - but our scrubbed and polished hiking boots ex ... read more

Kuala Lumpur. Heading for the Jungle. Sabah, Borneo 9th September 2008 The grey-haired-nomads are on the move once again. In search of new adventures, heading for Kuala Lumpur, a twelve hour flight from London Heathrow, en route to other places you have doubtless never heard of; Sabah, for example. Everyone can travel to Sabah these days. It's possible to organise an itinerary to include: internal flights (essential for 'getting around' as the few roads there are are mostly unmettled and potholed), river transport, dawn and night river safaris, lodges on the Kinabatangan River, elephant hunting, hiking up to your ears in mud and thorns, bats in caves and bird's nest soup, birding walks shared with hungry bloodsucking leeches and a host of other wildlife things to add to the excitement - with but an hour or ... read more

A Postcard from MADEIRA - April 2008 It’s now nearly nine months since we returned from our trip around North America, and the English winter has recently been getting to our bones - time for a short break to warmer climes to top up on a bit of sunshine. Why, then, Madeira you might ask? Well; for a start, we had heard about their cake and wine, but more to the point, we remembered my little brother, Michael, had once visited the island and told us how much he loved it. We thought we should check it out. You can’t get there by motorhome, there's too much water in the way, so we took a plane from Stansted, courtesy of EasyJet. Many people we know have already been to Madeira; some of them several times. They ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 45 29th June 2007 Home at last. Immense shocks awaited our return to England with the realisation that our memories of this land had not faded nor our worst fears abated with time. Traffic swarmed the M25 from Heathrow, aggressive and impatient, travelling at high speeds we were unaccustomed to, too many people, hurrying, scurrying, in too small a space, all bound with the frustration of congestion and too few hours in each day for both work and play. Out on the fringes of London’s arteries, traffic slowed a knot or two, the roads narrowed perceptibly and the lush green of England’s new summer filled the air with its own brand of beauty: of broad-leaf trees, voluptuous hedges bounding tiny fields, small compact towns and villages, houses of brick and tile, ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 44 17th May - 30th May 2007 A nomadic swan-song. The magic of Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons There’s a new way of life just around the corner; a life of cars and motels, turning onto the tourist track on the western fringe of Wyoming and the borders of Montana, Idaho, Utah and back into Colorado for the last two weeks of our tour of North America before flying out from Denver on the 30th May. We’ll miss the Winnebago: the stops for coffee and lunch at the nod of a hat, home cooking, knowing where to find a clean pair of socks, the diary, a map of Utah, the telescope (deep in the suitcase when you most need it); a bottle-opener when it’s absolutely essential - and the toilet, ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 43 5th May - 16th May 2007 Experienced 24ft Winnebago for Sale As our week in Rapid City wore on, we were tempted to reconsider our strategy to sell the motorhome. Our advertising had produced just one unsatisfactory enquiry over the internet and the T-Mobile phone remained silent. Our options were to continue on to uninhabited Yellowstone National Park or return south again to Denver and a larger urban market. With considerable reluctance, we chose the latter, surrendering all hope of experiencing the magic of Yellowstone again, and placed advertisements in Denver newspapers and websites for the coming Thursday. The web turned up two enquiries from ‘Craig’s list’ in the Denver area within 24 hours and the issue was sealed; we would head south again, retracing our footsteps through Wyoming back ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 42 23rd April - 6th May 2007 From the Rockies to Nebraska and South Dakota - and the sad demise of Suzie, our friend and bear. Rocky Mountain National Park There seemed little point in waiting for the snow to come to Rocky Mountain National Park, leaving us with the prospect of sitting out the days awaiting the thaw. Two feet of snow was forecast and that was enough to convince us to move on rather more rapidly than previously intended. We had enjoyed our short stay; the awesome sight of magnificent mountains of the Continental Divide sawing a sharp line through the state: 58 jagged white peaks over 14,000ft stretching their heads into the sky, herds of elk and deer on the hills, fleeting flocks of bluebirds on the meadows, ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 41 13th April - 23rd April 2007 The Great Canyons of Utah and the Colorado River Snow covered the ground when we woke at Colorado National Monument. Visibility was down to 50 yards and thick grey clouds threatened worse to come. We left early to avoid being snowed in, wending our way down to the valley floor, heading for Utah, 100 miles across wide open flats, out beyond Grand Junction into the sparse grasslands, a sea of white as far as the eye could see in the brightening sky, the first rays of morning sunlight striking the mountains to the north. We sighted only two dwellings over the next 70 miles along the freeway; enormous ranches no doubt, but no signs of cattle, and roadside warnings; ‘No services for 56 miles’. ... read more
