Today is the 1st of May and the French seem to celebrate May Day better than anyone! Since May Day in France in their Labour Day, of course nearly everything in the city is closes including shops, transportation, markets and restaurants (until the evening at least) and yet, everyone is outside enjoying the beautiful weather and day off of work and school. There are also dozens of worker and student protests going on all of the city with the largest one going from the Bastille to Hotel de Ville. Another lovely Parisian tradition on May Day is that on every street there are dozens of small stands selling bunches of sweet lily of the valley for the small price of one euro. Everyone is walking around the sunny city with tiny bouquets of lily of the ... read more

I just experienced one of my most exciting and thrilling events since my time in Paris. I was walking home from the grocery store early this afternoon and as I came towards the Bir Hakeim (Eiffel Tower) metro I saw 4 or 5 men running as fast as they could followed shortly by 3 police men. The reason that these men were being chased by the police was because they were illegal sellers of Eiffel Tower merchandise. Now, for those who do not know there are many men selling illegal Eiffel Tower key chains and statues all along the street heading towards the monument and around the monument itself. Though these men with black plastic bags are preferred by tourists because of there cheap prices, it is completely illegal because they are violating copyright policies and ... read more

My dear friend Austin came all the way from the States to visit my in Paris for her spring break last week! It was at the perfect moment, I was just getting to that point where I was getting slightly homesick after being in a foreign country for 2 months... After meeting her at Charles de Gaulle airport and dropping off her stuff at my apartment we went to the 9th and the 18th to do some sightseeing and shopping. We went to the Palais Garnier (also know as the Opéra de Paris) and walk around the grand avenues that all lead to the enormous and beautifully decadent building from the late 19th century. For lunch we wandered through the narrow winding streets in the 9th and went to Chartier, a classic french brasserie at 7th ... read more

I had the most incredible moment the other evening. I live on line 6 on the Paris metro and there are a handful of musicians on the line, mostly accordion players. Yesterday while returning home on the metro I passed over the Seine and by the Eiffel Tower and one of the really good, authentic accordion players was on my car. Just as I passed in front of the Eiffel Tower it reached the top of the hour and the monument began to sparkle with thousands of lights. It was such a classically French moment for me, like something out of a movie, so unreal. There I was listening to a timeless French accordion tune, watching the Eiffel Tower glitter over the Seine and all I could think about was how incredibly fortunate I am to ... read more

Ireland is the land of green rolling hills, an expansive literary history, castles and of course delicious pubs! This past weekend I went on my second European excursion to Dublin, Ireland which is about 1 hour and 15 minuets away from Pairs by plane. Even though Ireland is much more north than France the weather was surprisingly warm and quite sunny all weekend and made walking around the historic city extremely pleasant. It actually reminded me a lot of Maine, which I have been missing very much, with the smell of the crisp, coastal winds sweeping through the town, the old small town feel and the extremely friendly natives. After arriving very late in Dublin at the airport, we immediately went to our hotel in the City Center of Dublin (our hotel was in D2 specifically, ... read more

After living in Paris for over a month I have begun to understand why the French are famous for their love of food.... From cafes and brasseries to boulangeries and fresh outdoor markets there just seems to be so much good food everywhere I turn. During the week I usually go shopping at one of the simple grocery stores in my neighborhood, either a monoprix or a franpix (both have many locations all over Paris and are like any typical American grocery store like Ukrops or Food Lion). These stores carry some American brands, but mostly they carry French brands of food like incredible mustard, crepe mixes (rather than pancake mixes) and milk that is actually stored at room temperature in bottles that at first I thought were bottles of bleach. But for the freshest and ... read more

Ever since I arrived in Paris I have been working diligently on improving my French and have been trying to speak French consistently when I go to shops, restaurants and other places around town. Even though I think that my French has improved immensely over the past month just by living here and hearing it everyday, I am still frustrated by one strange fact that I have discovered about being here as an American student. As much as I think my accent is perfect and I have thought through what I am going to say perfectly, whenever I speak in French to French person they always answer me in broken English like I would not understand French. I was very frustrated by this fact for awhile and after discussing these experiences with my French professor at ... read more

I went on my first European excursion this past weekend to London, England! London, though very different from Paris, was very exciting and full of history and the weekend was a lot of fun. We stayed near Oxford Circus (did you know that they call them "circus" on London because it means a circular square, a square not in the geometrical sense but like a location of action in a city) which was a very happening place with lots of pubs, shops and cobblestone streets to wander down in the dreary afternoons. Of course our first meal was a traditional Fish n' Chips with a nice light ale at a local hole-in-the-wall near Oxford Circus. I had been craving this for weeks and the place we went to, Fish Bone, did not fail to fully satisfy ... read more

I went to the ballet at Palais Garnier also known at the Opera National de Paris, I saw Lifar, Petit, Béjart which was a three act ballet choreographed by the three named directors all which vastly different themes and styles but all beautiful and incredible. The Lifar ballet was titled Suite en blanc, Petit's ballet was L'Arlésienne and Béjart's ballet was le Boléro. I had very good seats on the first balcony in a private suit very close to the stage and right above the orchestra. The Palais Garnier is absolutely gorgeous, lush red seats, gilded walls, beautifully painted ceilings, marble floors, grand hallways light by chandeliers and magical statues lining a grand staircase. The outside is very extraordinary as well with huge, airy balconies that look out onto the busy street below and giant neo-classical ... read more

We had our day trip to the Musée national de la Renaissance and the Royaumont Abbey which are both about 30 minuets north of the city. The Musée national de la Renaissance, which is housed in the Château d'Ecouen was so beautiful and it was very nice to get out of the city for the day and into the beautiful French countryside. The chateau was built in the mid 16th century by Anne de Montmorency (a man who was named after his godmother), he was a major patron of the arts in France, and a protector of Huguenot artists. The chateau itself was a beautiful example of renaissance architecture and looked like something out of a fairy tale in the middle of the peaceful countryside. The museum's collection inside the walls were filled with enormous tapestries ... read more
