Weather today was intermittent Showers and temperatures reaching a maximum of 8 degrees Celcius. Caught the bus downtown and attended another weight watchers meeting. Staff were real friendly - insisting we stay for the meeting and happy to show us around the venue. Its been fantastic having the opportunity meeting other WW staff and members. From there we walked along Pine Street looking at all the xmas stalls and decorations along the way. We stopped by the Pikes Place Market Place again - it's hard not to keep dropping by - the whole market place has a great vibe about it! The Pike Market Fish Place, founded in 1930, is an open air fish market located in Seattle, at the corner of Pike Street and Pike Place. It is known for their tradition of fishmongers throwing ... read more

Woke up feeling absolutely rested - the bed here at our B&B is so comfortable and we slept so well. After breakfast we met another couple who are staying at the B&B who are from Sweden. It's great meeting so many people and learning about their lives. The bus stop to downtown is only a few minutes walk from here and is a flat rate of $2.25 per ride. We got off just before Pikes Market Place to collect our rental vehicle from SIX T In downtown. We upgraded from an economy size car to an Audi - Total cost including insurance $183 for 5 days hire. Very nice vehicle but it took us some time to figure out how to even get it started! Geoff is fantastic at being able to drive over here so ... read more

With a 10 hour stop-over here in Sacromento we checked in our carry on luggage and took a walk downtown. What a surprise it was to learn this is the home of the polar express train! Tickets sell out months in advance. They go on sale in September and sell out in 15 minutes. So no ride on the polar express for us but it was still it lovely to see such xmas spirit happening in town. We watched the Macy's Xmas theatre light show in the street centre - really feels like xmas here - very different from home in Australia. The train left Sacromento at midnight By which time we were a bit over sitting in the lounge. The Coast Starlight left on time at 12.15am. We got into our sleeper , grabbed a ... read more

Weather here today -2 degrees Celsius with heavy fog and light snow. This morning we had breakfast and then headed to the train to get to Millennium Park. Our CTA cards have certainly taking a bashing over the past few days - public transport is certainly the way to get around. We never have to wait more than a few minutes for a train. "The Loop" trains travel around above ground in the city centre stopping at crossroads - brilliant! The Loop trains have heating lights that you stand under while waiting for the trains - much needed today! It was freezing cold at Millenium Park but the upside is it was quiet so great for photography of the much loved "cloud gate" aka "the bean". The ice rink was deserted but I'm sure it gets ... read more

Jet lag is starting to hit home today. Geoff has a sore throat and we are both extremely tired...but still the day goes on. We did a bit of morning shopping picking up cold/flu tablets and few essential winter clothing pieces before heading off to a Weight Watchers meeting at La salle Street. Being a WW leader myself I was keen to see how it operates from this side of the world! We were welcomed with open arms by the staff - we enjoyed the 30 minute meeting and purchased a few snack products to take in our upcoming Amtrak journey...going to places like a local is what we live about being independent travellers. Next we headed to the Hancock Centre where we caught the elevator to the 96th floor - signature lounge - here we ... read more

Our flight from LAX left right on time and we arrived at O'hare international airport just after 9pm. 27 hours of travel has taken its toll on us both - economy travel means lack of sleep and short tempers!! O'hare is a huge airport but very easy to navigate around! The airport had lots of lovely xmas decorations and like everything in this country they were just magnificent! I visited the ladies bathroom on the way out and found something new in toilet designs. The toilets have an automatic toilet seat cover - you wave your hand across the sensor button on the top of the cistern and a new cover moves around onto the seat, then a message lets you know it is safe to sit down on the seat! A whole new perspective on ... read more

It's been a big week but the day has finally arrived! The anticipation is nearly over and soon our adventure will begin. Brisbane international airport was certainly busy at 7am - guess it's the holiday season - today was the last day we were able to book airline tickets at a reasonable price - hence our departure today! We leave Brisbane on a Fiji airways flight stoppng at Fiji for a stopover of just over 4 hours. Next flight will be with Fiji airways direct to LAX - arriving at 11.25am Tuesday. Another stopover of 3.5 hours before arriving at Chicago o'hare airport at 9pm...that's the plan anyway! The stopover at Fiji seemed to drag on but the flight was full of mid to retired Americans who have just got off a cruise ship touring Australia ... read more

Well....the time is nearly here! One week today and we will board an Air Fiji flight to LA then connecting flight to Chicago. This last week is jam packed with finalising plans around home and triple checking our itinerary! It's been a lot of hard work organising the whole trip ourselves but we are excited about every aspect of this adventure! This trip we have used a new app called "tripit". Although it has taken a bit of work it is an invaluable tool to store all our travel details including flights, accommodation, activities, car rental bookings and much more. It is synced to all our devices making our itinenary very easy access. We have also friends who can view our Starting with a visit to Chicago, Amtrak ride through the Rockies, enjoying the sights of ... read more

WEDNESDAY -Taxi picked us up from Airport Lodge as organised at 7.30am. Apollo was only a short ride away $16 taxi fare. We arrived before the store was open but that was a good thing because we wanted to get out on the road with our camper as early as possible. After signing all the necessary paperwork we left Apollo before 9am and headed into Christchurch and the surrounding suburbs to check out the earthquake damage. Christchurch is like a ghost town these days - lots of construction happening and lots of road closures. The street of the city are basically empty - it certainly is a very sad sight to see. More than 1000 buildings have been demolished in the city centre and construction is full on.The weather in the morning was overcast and cold but ... read more
