The golfer Hi Dad, so amazing...I saw that dude playing golf on 90 mile beach when I went for my 3 hour run there a few weeks back! He was very friendly however I did have to dodge his stray shots as I was heading towards him!

No sand flies? Hey Mike loving your little travel tale. You wouldn't be the first to lose it on the soft sand of 90mile. Lucky no injuries ay. Congrats on making it to the top of the island... I look forward to seeing how it goes for you at the other end. No sand flies at Taputaputa Bay? Pretty sure last time I stayed up there they actually picked me up off the ground and transported me a few meters. Hope you got a feed of eel in the Hoki. Good luck on your travels back south. Looking forward to the next fix of Feral Mike and his Beast.Choice. TB
woohoo! Well done, you've made it! Give us a yell and we'll sort out the chopper to get you back to Auckland.
In the meantime, we're looking for ideas for Christmas features; perhaps we could do one about apparently respectable people who turn feral?

ps perhaps you should have used the AK47 on the gannet?
Home is where the lamingtons live Thanks for the wonderful W/E Mike, really enjoyed time spent with you and Judy, I think we will all go away from the Hokianga a couple of kgs heavier thanks to Mums first class cooking. You can see why my surfing mates named Mums place "Brockie Bakeries" It really is a special part of the world, holding many happy memories. I guess you will have got to Cape Reinga, so Its all down hill from now on :) Loved the photos, can't wait for the next installment, Take care out there, Love Mark
Fair Winds Hey Mike. All your sailing buddies wish you fair winds and safe harbours. We will follow your journey with interest and raise the odd glass of port to you (actually, quite a few glasses of port)
Thanks! Thanks to everyone for your comments. As I think you can tell, I am having fantastic fun! And it is wonderful to hear from you - sort of keeps me in touch with the real world. Too many to respond to you all individually, but be reassured I am reading and rereading your comments whenever I get a chance. regards to everyone, Feral Mike
keep the weight on the pedals Hi Mike. Great meeting up at Langs then the next day in the Waipu forest. You look so happy and relaxed on your bike.
Enjoy your journey on the open road. You are an inspiration.
ps I would suggest soaking "the twins" at Ngawha Springs whether they need it or not!
BB? Great work on the travel blog Mike. Loving your solution on the BB...trusty old anti chaff. I won't share my story on chaffage. a little too public here. Keep safe and look forward to more quirky updates.

Ouch!! Hi Mike
That's very amusing. And we girls thought we had it rough when it came to cycling! By the way, when I did the Cape to Argus 109km bike race last year, I'd been gripping the handlebars so tightly for 4 hours that the lower part of my hands were numb for a week after! Very odd sensation.
I'm enjoying the blogs, thanks. And I'm off to Kyoto on Saturday and will be doing some urban cycling so will spare a thought for you!

Gurney Goo Hey Mike,
Congratulations on an awesome effort so far! Read your blog and couldn't help but pass comment on your potential situation. Having many crazy friends who partake in tortuous extreme sports, I have heard reports of (and on occassion witnessed) some graphic damage to bits that really shouldn't suffer such trauma. A lady would not like to admit to suffering such indignities herself....was going to recommend Gurney Goo, but sounds as though you are made of tougher stuff! Putting my physio hat on, you may want to play with the height of your handle bars, pins and needles might come from your neck or shoulder position - either that or you're just gripping on too tight from sheer exhilaration!! Keep up the good effort!!
If you leave me can I come too ? Well its been a good few days now. I would say you have been wet, hot, almost run down and buggered ...well and truly by now !. Just hang in there, as I know you will, not being the type of man to give up in a hurry. I sooooo envy you doing this, and I would have loved to come with you. Take care and dont get run over, you are irreplaceable. xx Cush
Glad you are on the road at last! Hi Mike,
We are really enjoying your blog and think you will be world-famous in NZ! This story has a book in it.
Anyone less "Feral" than you would be hard to find, as the ducklings will attest. It's lovely to think of you out there civilising the hinterland! Go well and may the roads be smooth and flat!

Kanzu. Mike what exactlyis a kanzu? Whatever it is I hope your tour of the north goes well, the weather is foul, so you should be having a Really Good Time. Good luck and Safe Journey. cheers Penny I think I have just made my comment into the Comment title. Hope you can unravel this Mike, as you sit in your tent in the rain and wind! xx Penny
The mighty north west Mike ... good for you looking out for those ducklings. Ali and I live not far from where you did your valiant work and I only wish I could have been there yesterday to cheer you on. In a small twist of the ironic, the very best dish served West of Ponsonby is undoubtedly the "Twice-Roasted Duck" in Grand Marnier, lovingly prepared by Pete at Porcini restaurant in Helensville. Admire you mate for what u are doing. Stay safe. Rob
Glad you are alive! Good to hear you are alive Dad - the rain has been pretty torrential today! Will see you on the weekend in Leigh, good luck with the next few kms. xoxo
Cable Ties Go Brockie! My Dad has a habit of posting me cable ties and various tools, I've never used them but I'm glad they did the trick for you. All the best for the next stage! Sam.
take off time!! Hey Mike!
Congrats on A) getting this website up and running :) and B) finally leaving the comforts of Auckland (and the luxuries of Judys cooking!!). Hope the first few days have gone successfully and you're enjoying the freedom of the road! (still think you're insane though!!). When you get to Wellington you'll have to pop in for a visit (and if you bribe me nicely with chocolate I may let you stay in our 1st class spare room (views of Oriental Bay included of course!!). Cant wait to hear all the stories!!
Love Fi :)
Hello From Honkers Hi Mike, here's to a little Hong Kong typhoon-style tail wind coming your way! I'll be hanging out for your blogs and cheering you on. And thanks for the opportunity to donate to Oxfam in honour of your effort - when the going gets tough it helps to know your sweat isn't in vain. Melanie xx (Got The Boss on your ipod, I hope!).
You feral? Mike, have the greatest time going feral. I can't imagine you being dirty and smelly but am waiting to be entertained by the hairy photos you'll post. Good luck. Andi B.
Hey Mike,
Is today departure day ? If so good luck. Hope you have a good tail wind and a long flat road to start off with. And when you hit those hills dont forget to keeping saying "its better than another day in the office" Keep us posted on the journey.
Regards,
Stephen

I made a solo cycle ride from one end of New Zealand to the other over the southern summer - 2009/10. I kept off the busy highways as much as possible, and even managed a few 4WD tracks in some of the more remote corners of the country. I finished on 9 April 2010 and returned home ... full info
