not good weather for cycling! Your weather is truly only good for ducks. Baling out [temporarily] would be in perfect order...enjoy Wellington.
Reminds me of the atrocious weather when you and Judy set out from Waiaua Hut and needed hot coffee, fresh choccie banana muffins and a warm log fire in a cosy home!
Hi Mike Really enjoying following your progress and seeing all the pictures of these charming little places and beautiful Marae. Have got out the map book tonight to try and find a few. Also good to hear some emotional truths about the feral life and going solo. Your latest blogs and photos really got me thinking how we function on different levels. physical, emotional, and spiritual and how we go about searching for satisfaction on those different levels. Hope you get the gears sorted and have a happy and safe journey on to Wellington
Cheers, Mark
Oh no! Oh dear Dad - I hope it is Ok! At least it is keeping your mind entertained I guess...All good hear busy busy. Birthday BBQ tomorrow! Cant wait to see you soon xoxo
WOW Hey Mike,
I just e-wrote a kinda big comment on your amazing journey, but somehow that just disappeared!! SO just to say I have just caught up with your blog (though I had a couple of quick looks earlier) and think what you are doing is an amazing thing... I will come back with further comments soon... I have been a bit overwhelmed with things...C has just finished round 4 and we are feeling very optimistic about the future...and thanks for your expressions of concern via Judy!

blog literate at last Well Mike! What a fantastic tale of travels to date. Two good things came out of New Plymouth's fog and closed airport the day Alasdair needed to fly to Singapore...
1. We got to see Judy
2. Judy showed me how to go to 'next entry'
Oh sigh...had been wondering why there were no further comments on your site! Have just read them all...you are a real trouper. Fine weather would be good! Luvnhugs. Lesley
Hi Mike,
I've been ravaged by Magpies too. Its very frightening indeed. The worst is when your on an out and back route and know you have to come across him again. Probably best to just yell out as he hits your helmet. Would be nice to have a tennis racket qt such times wouldn't it?
I hope the weather improves for you. Take care.
ak-47 for sale i am interested in the ak-47 you have for sale. How old is the gun? What price is he asking, and what make and model is it? Just email me...thanks
Magpie Militia! Hi Mike, someone I work with has just cycled from Perth to Sydney (with support vehicles) and he said that the worst thing about it was, not the distance, Nullabor monotony, or road trains, but the magpies!! He came to dread their daily assaults and never figured out any good way of defending himself. No lumpectomies, but much psychological scarring! Good luck. Melanie x
while you exhaust y'self just to let you know that as you munch taste stultifying museli bars and pedal furiously... the Gravy Boat with the PC on board departed Pahi last evening at 6pm NZ summertime ---and armed with a coldie or two.. dredged in three fathoms opposite Tinopai, and returned to said Pahi just an hour later at 7pm with a full quota of the delicacy genus Scallop... 2 p on b.. quota = 40 -- fat and rich with red roe..... pan fried in butter and garlic and a sop of cream ....adding, of course, a dash of SBlanc .. and as the bottle had now been been opened.....(sigh)
also young Rick Panhuis called in to establish our connection - his mate is Merrin's friend - apparently you lunched with him at Mangawhai -.. cheers pc
Slow rider comments First - congratulations on completing the ride. What a great day it was.
I feel that Taupo has done everything to support the fun ride aspect. The prize giving is not until 6.00pm (it has to happen sometime), which gives 10 hrs + to finish. Thank you to 1,000 volunteers to make this ride happen. Cheers, Andrew
Crazy much?? Dad your blogs are getting more loopy by the day, Im glad your in the civilised metropolis of Taupo with the non-crazy Ross (hmmm...) and Sarah for a while!
Thanks Chris It's a bit daunting, but I've just been searching the Round Taupo website and their novices training schedule only gets to 120k. So clearly someone thinks that's enough to get round. It'll be fun. Thanks for all your support to date. Cheers, FM.
GO MIKE!!! I won't be there in person, but I'll be cheering you on all the way around, in spirit. It'll be me giving you that little push up that gnarly hill round the back of the lake, and I'll be the one shouting, You Can Do It, when you're ready to give up. Do it for the rest of us here at 3, still stuck inside on a beautiful day, wishing we were with you. GO MIKE!
progress You appear to be making amazingly fast progress, for a meander. That campsite did indeed look beautiful. See you when you reach Wellington for a cold beer, a long shower and a soft bed.
tick of approval well after seeing that you're more than welcome to come and and stay in Wellington*
*prices include one cooked meal by Mike per night
:)
You are brilliant Hey Mike, I look forward to reading every blog you write. Some are pure genius, all are entertaining. I want to pack my bags and leave the desk as well... but not to cycle around NZ.
Meaning of Life Mike, you might be wondering about the meaning of life on the road (I loved that blog), but now I'm wondering about the meaning of life in Hong Kong. Perhaps I'll lead the Port Waikato land rush! Don't tell anyone! xx

I made a solo cycle ride from one end of New Zealand to the other over the southern summer - 2009/10. I kept off the busy highways as much as possible, and even managed a few 4WD tracks in some of the more remote corners of the country. I finished on 9 April 2010 and returned home ... full info
