Reply for Sarah - From: The... "Worldīs Most Dangerous Road" - La Paz, Peru - 5 May
My name is Pablo Paz and I am the owner of Vertigo Biking, well first I need to tell you that its true the Theodore had the Accident with us that Day, Itīs also true that Gravity people helped us that day(They are the oldest and most reputable company in Bolivia and we canīt say bad things about them)and of course everybody took out their rescue equipment, ours was also there, at the end of the day I personally went to 3 or 4 companies giving things back, but It doesnīt mean that we didnīt have ours, but no one is going to say this is mine or this is yours if someone has an accident and itīs in high risk, One more thing that is true is that other guides helped us a lot in this sittuation, also our tourists and other tourists, we did and will do the same thing in sittuations of other companies because I think that if there is Human Being in need everybody should help. Our company as all of the companies oparating this tour had acccidents, but be sure that we are not here just trying to make some money, our bikes are Haro Bikies and we are recommended in http://www.harobikes.com (American Brand), our security equipment is branded and I am sure no company offers more equipment like us, full face helmets (Brand 661),knee & elbow pads gloves & goggles (brand:thor, Smith & EVS), with this equipment we saved some lifes and people from serious injuries in the past and hopefully we will save more in the future,Our group the day of the accident was of 6 people and we had 2 guides maybe the lowest ratio of tourist per guide in the market, but remember that this is an adventure tour and every tourist goes under their own risk, we give them a bike but we canīt ride for them, so if you get to the end of the tour depends on how do you ride the bike, how do you obey the rules and many other circumstances out of our control (like weather, road maintainance and others) Sarah: I understand some of your words, You may had an awful day, so do I and of course our guides and personal and the people that was there, but I have to say that itīs not true that we are not legal and itīs not true that our guides didnīt do their best effort to help according to their trainment (as everyone) and please write me an e-mail to pablo@vertigobiking.com and I can send you a scanned copy of our papers if you keep in Doubt and please consider my point. There are more than 26 deaths in the death road Tour, this was our first fatal accident(hopefully the lat for us and for anyone) and think that there are other 25 deaths (Reported),this could happen to any company (This happened to Us, To Gravity and to others), and many bad competitors are using this and used the deaths of others as advertisment, I donīt think that this is correct because a person died and I think nobody must get a profit from this. Well Finally I have to say that we wont hide this sad accident to anyone, and in 1 year and few months we are operating we are getting more experience and we are learning some things from the big ones (Gravity) and improoving things not only for us but for every rider on the death road, I say this because I had a meeting with the owner of Gravity and we will begin together (with some other agencies that may want to) a Project to get some more equipment and facilities for common use like an ambulance and an inmediate rescue center and Inmediate medical assitance center nearby the road (Theodores father will also assit us in this purpose) My guides cryed and suffered this sittuation, they are people puting their lifes in risk every day to make our Tourists have a nice and safe day, but they are not gods and they are not supermen, so please donīt judge people. My guides, my personal and me went to the place of the accident on tuesday 12 and we left a memorial and flowers for Theodore, we prayed for him and for this not to happen again to anyone, and I will take this chance to say Thanks to Gravity Staff, To some people of B-side staff, to Chacaltaya Staff and to all the people helping us that day specially to the guy in yellow that as many bolivians gets a very low salary to give some mainteinance to the road but with his Machete in hand he entered to the cliff and opened a path in middle of the trees to help on the rescue. “Theodore you will be in our hearts and in our minds for ever.”

An English man died in tour with Vertigo Biking - From: The... "Worldīs Most Dangerous Road" - La Paz, Peru - 5 May
I was doing a ride on the WMDG with Gravity on May 9th and we did not finish the ride 'cause one client from Vertigo Biking, Theodore William Dreyfuss, fell on the cliff and died soon. Vertigo guides and clients passed on by rushing like the wind and a few corners after we were looking down a tragedy. None of the guides in Vertigo were trained to descend into the forrest and rescue the injured man, and they didn't have any ropes nor stretcher or any special device to help assist this unfortunate guy. Gravity and other biking companies lend their stuff. What we knew after is that this company Vertigo Biking have been accused by their Bolivian counterparts of being not ruled by the proper Bolivian regulations. So they are not legal. Webare girls and guys! We have been happy to leave the jungle safe but maybe others would hire again this crappy company!

I loved Caye Caulker Belize - From: Caye Caulker, Belize - 10 January 08
I was in Caye Caulker approximately 15 years ago and it was like having a piece of Heaven in your back yard. My husband and I remaind friends with several residents in the area. However, when we got to Belize City that was a different story. A young man demanded money from us or he was going to cut us with a knife and at the shaby hotel we stayed, there was a military cop with a machine gun that looked into our room for several hours that night. However, when we got to Caye Caulker, things were great: the island which I believe is only 1/2 mile across and 1 mile long with no roads other than a sand on that goes through this very tiny island. When we were on the island, there was one truck that made the deliveries to the stores and restaurant. My husband has gone back several times and we are planning a return trip very soon.

In Belem: beware of the German MARCUS TENHAGE - From: Mugged at knifepoint in Belem, north east Brazil - 18 Feb
The stupid Germans what we are fell for another German (he named himself MARCUS TENHAGE from Bottrop) approaching us on Saturday, November 1, 2008, telling us a sobbing story that he was robbed of everything in Belem that morning and therefore does not have any money to pay the departure tax to fly back to Germany that night. According to him, a Frenchman had helped him already with 28 R$ so that he only needed R$72 to get out of the country. He promised to pay back as soon as he was in Germany ( I still hear him say "take my shoes, take my pants, I just want to leave this country to go back home), he promoside to send us an email as soon as he got home ... so far, more than a month has passed and we did not hear from him at all and my emails came back .... It is one thing to help someone out of a miserable situation but to get cheated from a fellow citizen hurts a bit. Also my stupidity nagges on me --THERE IS NO DEPARTURE TAX IN BRAZIL - AT LEAST NOT IN OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2008

Flashattack - From: Mugged at knifepoint in Belem, north east Brazil - 18 Feb
We had a much less horrifying but similar situation in Belem on a Sunday afternoon (November 2, 2008), walking up the main road from Vero Peso - two young guys were coming toward us and the moment one of them had reached me something was happening with the collar of my shirt - just did not know what - when I reached for the thin neckless my wife had given me 30 years ago (I have to admit I forgot to take it off before) it was not on my neck anymore but still hanging on - instead I had a 3 inch scratch on my neck ..... I just could not believe the bold attitude - my neckless was hardly to be seen - he must have had a trained eye and planned that attack in a split second .... All in all I do not recommend to visit Belem - there is nothing special about that city, I had the feeling that visitors were not really welcome, the Ver o Peso is just a market - yes, interesting but not unique ... we decided to spend some time on the island of Marajon which was pure nature, nice people and relaxing
