Was woken up at 0500 by the alarm. Naturally pressed snooze for 10 minutes- even Ali, who is normally the early bird, wasn't feeling the love for this time of day. (as Chris said before we left- there's only one 5 o clock in Emma's day, and it ain't the morning one) anyway, after a shower and a coffee, we made our way to the meeting point, only to see the bus driving away. Ali had a right flap that we'd missed it, but it was only 0555 and we weren't meant to be getting picked up until 6am. Panic over when we met another couple who were on the same trip, and a couple of minutes later our bus arrived. There were 8 of us in the group, and with Ali now officially classed ... read more

I was up at 6, Ali had been up for hours worrying that we'd sleep in and miss our flight to Alice. Funny thing being, we made it just in the nick of time 30 minutes before (internal flights here are as easy as catching a train). I'd asked ali how much stuff she was taking, as i wasn't sure what to pack. I asked if we were taking carry on baggage instead of check in. 'no way' she said ' you only allowed 5kg in carry on and I'll have that in make up alone' ha ha! We had breakfast on the Qantas flight ( I think I may add Qantas to my Christmas card list, the amount of time I've spent with them recently!) and chatted to pass the the 2 hours it ... read more

Today we were going croc spotting on the Adelaide river! It was about an hour or so away from Darwin, and we left just before 10am. There are lots of places here with weird names, and it didn't change as we drove through Humpty Doo (home of the world-famous  humpty  tavern apparently- no I've never heard of it either) a bit of off roading to get down to the river, the car was covered in that signature red dust of the northern territory. When we got to the croc place, whilst waiting to get on the boat, we sat and read a folder that was crammed full of articles from the NT Times to do with Crocodile attacks and / or sightings, let me tell you, there were a lot!    Within minutes of boarding ... read more

Ali  was at work today, so after I waved her off this morning, I thought I'd go for a run having not done so for weeks! The extra wobble I could feel at the rear, confirmed my lack of recent effort on the sport front, and I couldn't help but think of the song 'I like big butts' as I commenced my first attempt at running down under. I thought I'd get lost but was ok and was familiar with where Ali and I had walked on my first day here. It was hot, but bearable, and the air smells so lovely from the frangipani flowers, ( the meaning of such flower apparently being shelter and protection ) that it was quite a nice experience as far as phys goes, especially running along the path ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Batchelor May 18th 2011

We were up and about today to drive to a little place called Batchelor about an hour away from Darwin. Sam had the opportunity to have flying lessons at school (as I said to Ali- it beats the cycling proficiency we did back in the day!) anyway, we thought we'd make a day of it, so as we arrived at Batchelor airfield, we managed to catch a glimpse of Sam who was already airborne before he flew off in a northerly direction. One lad hadn't turned up, so the 3 boys flying today would get a longer flight, and the instructor said if we returned at about 1230, we may be in time to see Sam take off on his second flight. With an hour or two to wait, we drove to a place called ... read more

Just another day at School....
Good landing Sam

Woke up at about 6am and after Ali had taken Sam to school, and some breakfast, we had a walk around the place she lives- Bay View. It is a lovely area (unsurprisingly with a bay view) with loads of absolutely beautiful houses. No two seem to be the same, but all look really funky with a splash of colour here and there. Really really nice and many that I wouldn't mind living in myself. (we can dream) We walked by the lock, by the mangroves and saw some lovely colourful birds flying about which I later found out were bee eaters.  We made our way into town and to the Darwin museum. It was really quite interesting, with loads of different sections on things in and about Darwin. I quite liked all the wildlife exhibits ... read more

At East Point

I was up quite early today, so sat out in the sun to check a few emails- was great to hear from my mum, amongst others and all what's been happening back home. After a shower I packed my bags up once again, and was surprised that everything went back in ok. I don't know why as I haven't bought anything, but it's usually the way. Anyway, all packed and ready for the off, I thanked Charlie, Terry and Will for their hospitality, and Charlie drove me to South Brisbane station to get the sky train to the domestic terminal. Again it was a lovely sunny day and the train was really straightforward-like the Gatwick express but quicker. I was flying Jet star to Darwin which is kind of like Easyjet. Got checked in no ... read more

I was awake quite early, and felt fine and dandy, but it seems the skank had spanked the boys out and they didn't get up for ages. I tided the kitchen and made the most of the sun in the back garden, slapped on the factor 30 and read a book for a while. When the hangovers finally emerged, we drove up to another nice viewing point on Mount Cootha that overlooked Brisbane city. After taking some photos (and crying with laughing at the ones from the night before) we dropped the camper van off with it's co-owner Sarah, who lived in a fab place overlooking the river. It's no wonder everyone has so much fun out on the balconies and porches over here, it's a great place to gather with friends and chill out in ... read more

Had another leisurely lay in, and Charlie made me a brew and bacon and eggs for breakfast (good lad!) we went to the local Saturday market here in West End which is really good for cheap fruit and veg etc. There were also loads of food stalls which smelled lovely, there was every kind of nationality that you could imagine, lots of coffee stalls, and a few fresh fish markets with lots of variety to choose from- most of it caught locally. I think it was a hungarian place that made this flat bread filled with cheese etc that was cooked with an iron. Charlie said they'd once tried to do the same at home by wrapping their tefal in foil, but it didn't produce the same effect ( no shit) We stopped at one African ... read more

Had a lovely sleep and luckily seem to be on Oz time now. I managed to stay awake last night and we went out for drinks into West End. I stuck to lager- well, Pale Ale which seems to be quite a popular drink over here. We got in at around midnight and I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. Charlie woke me up  with a brew- Tetley tea- home from home! And made some poached eggs on toast (he's well trained) We had leisurely stroll to get the bus into the city of Brisbane, but not before missing one as Charlie had forgotten to bring his injection so had to go back ( he's diabetic ) I keep asking him how he manages to get through life with his lack of ... read more
