| 27th January 2009 Christina (Panama) | - From: Crossing Mexico It's pretty awesome to see what you're experiencing. Hope the itch is gone. I bet your Spanish is strong by now. I almost wonder if your trip will be "boring" once you get to California, with no more language barrier. |
| 16th January 2009 Katherine and Brian | chichen Itza - From: Crossing Mexico Hey Eileen, It was great to meet you on the way to Chichen Itza. Read some of your blog and your pictures are great! Hope the rest of your journey is going well. We just got home, quite cold today at -15 deg Farenheit. Best on the rest of your travels, Katherine and Brian |
| 11th January 2009 Panapada | Correction or two - From: Panama City and New Friends Hi Eileen, The Bridge of the Americas. formerly known as The Thatcher Ferry Bridge, because it replaced the Thacher Ferry in 1962 is no longer the only high rise bridge over the canal. In 2003, Panama opened the Centennial Bridge near Gamboa, Panama and as the name implies, it celebrates Panama's 100th year of splitting off of Colombia. As you alluded to, there is one other vehicle crossing of the Panama Canal at Gatun Locks on the Atlantic side build on the top of swinging gates in the locks. Theses gates swing open to allow a ship to pass and auto/truck traffic is controlled by a red/green light system since there is only one lane of traffic. Prior to the Thatcher Ferry Bridge opening in the 1960s, there was an overhead swing bridge over Miraflores Locks. This bridge had two way traffic but it too had to be closed to allow ship traffic to pass. The Darien Jungle prevents all but the one or two expiditions that carved through the jungle to get special designed 4 wheel drive Jeep type vehicles to South America. There is no rush by Panama or the US to complete the road through the Darien because it would made it easier to ship drugs and people north to Panama and on to the USA. Have a great adventure, I enjoy your writeup. |
| 11th January 2009 John C. | Way cool guys on the pole! - From: New Years and entering Mexico Hi Eileen. I enjoyed watching the pole guys too a couple years ago. When the fellow stands up on the very top of the pole I thought he was going for a flight for sure! If you get a chance, go to Xchel Ha (sp?) it is great fun snorkling in the salt/fresh water - much better than Xcharet (sp?). Take the collectivo for a cheap but interesting ride. I'll be staying near Playa del Carmen in a month and can't wait! I've enjoyed following your trip. Keep safe and have fun! |
| 9th January 2009 Syl | Restaurant - From: Crossing Mexico Too bad about the bed bugs. I agree Mexico is a big city; I got lost there for 4 hours on my motorcycle (25 years ago, ouch!). Also, I think you are incorrectly spelling the word "restaurant". Cheers |

| 3rd January 2009 Tim | - From: New Years and entering Mexico Chichen Itza is pretty commercialized as well, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. I hope you do as well. I hope that some day I can go there to see it during equinox. I climbed to the top of the Temple of Kulkulkan and was actually able to go inside the inner pyramid. I think it is closed to the public now though. And I'd also suggest going to check out the proto-observatory while you're there. Its kind of amazing to think what these people figured out... |

| 30th December 2008 Roberta | - From: Tikal, Guatemala and arriving in Belize Hey Eileen, I really enjoy reading the intricate details of your trip. Although you made a comment about people not actually reading the whole way through, I do because your descriptions of the smells, what someone was wearing, insects in your scungy water, etc really bring the scenes to life for those of us who are currently drenched from the rain, slush, and waist-deep snow. |

Envious of you since you get to travel and I am only stuck here in Bangalore...Safe Journey and Happy Holidays. |
