Our final stop in the US before the real travelling begins!! Sara successfully negotiated the subway to meet her mum at JFK - a 4 hour round trip in total!! We highly recommend meeting your mum at some point on a round the world trip as the standard of accommodation dramatically improves!! The Hyatt was right beside Grand Central Station (a relief with our rucksacks!!) the room overlooked the Chrysler Building - perfect! Were real tourists and took a bus trip to get orientated around Manhatten and then spent the afternoon getting some culture, watcing Denzel Washington (live!!) in Julius [View Full Entry]

Meet up with Gill at Mexico City airport - she had survived the night!! When we got off the plane in Tuxtla Guiterrez, it was like someone had left the oven on!!! We had a nights stay in a nice hotel with a pool (heavenly) before realising that the few words in Spanish that we know are not going to get us very far... Moved on the next morning to San Cristobal, a colonial town in Chiapas highlands, thankfully it was a bit cooler, so we could wander around quite comfortably. A bit different from the next day - when we [View Full Entry]

Discovered the meaning of "catching the red eye" after our overnight flight from LA to Boston - we were knackered. Lack of sleep and a heavy rucksack meant Sara had an afternoon snooze whilst I perused the local area around the university, music school and Fenway Park (home of the currently topnotch Boston Redsocks Baseball team). Hostel left alot to be desired despite the rates for sharing a 6 bedded dorm and skanky showers!! The next day took a tour around Harvard University and went out for Turkish food (recommended by the Zagat and the Lonely Planet). Despite the nice meal [View Full Entry]

We didn´t have any accommodation booked for the following night, so we played (drove ?) it by ear and ended up in Oatman. Another ´ghost´town, although this one was still inhabited, by a number of locals making a living out of the fact that Clarke Gable stayed there on his honeymoon night, the noon ´gun fight´and the wild donkeys (burro´s) who come and go as they please. Went to Lake Hasavu City, notably only for its fake lake and London Bridge. Gill once again used her persuasion skills and got us into our Las Vegas (Nevada) hotel a night early.... After dropping Gillian off in Denver we pushed on with the last leg of our tour that would include our faithful and strudy Chuck. There are some interesting places en route from Colorado to the Grand Canyon. A brief summary of our impressions of those that we saw.... Pueblo - not as bad as everyone said it would be, however, we arrived in the dark and left early the next morning. We think of it as the Colorado version of Beatty (ie not much apart from a Motel 6 room). Trinidad - yes, Trinidad. Where we had breakfast after leaving Pueblo [View Full Entry]

It's been while since our last update - no excuses really - well problems finding reasonably priced internet access is about the best we can come up with... After Park City we went for a complete change of scene and went to Moab - in order to visit the Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Once again we were cursed with bad weather on the day of the long drive and by the time we got the Arches - it was very wet and very windy - so our visit involved jumping in and out of Chuck to get a few snapshots.... Driving across Nevada was a very boring experience for all drivers concerned - 9 hours of nothingness. It even had the cheek to rain. The endless miles of desert changed into miles of Salt plains the minute we crossed into Utah - very bizarre. Passed the site of where the land speed record is held (but even Chuck resisted the urge to upstage it!!). Park City is gorgeous - an old mining town that outstripped Heavenly by miles. Our first day saw us coming face to face with deep powder, blizzards, white outs and queues of people!!!!!!!!!!! How rude! Slept well [View Full Entry]

Gills luggage finally turned up while she was up the slopes wearing a combination of Sara and my clothes!! Had a gentle start to Gills first day - after all she had been travelling for the 23 hours the previous day! By our reckoning she should be back on form in around one week. Weather closed in on the Monday nad lifts were closed on the higher runs as well as the Gondola due to high wind. Went to Kirkwood instead where a few more lifts were open - Gill and I braved the high winds while Sara surveyed the local [View Full Entry]

Peggy - the cocktail waitress/chalet maid

The drive up from Mammoth Lakes is only about three hours so we stopped off at Mono Lake and then tried to have breakfast at the Whoa Nellie Deli at Lee Vining - as recommended by Lonely Planet - however it was shut - perhaps they should update their books to let you know that certain stuff is seasonal.... The motel we were staying has chnaged it's name since we made the booking - nice of them to let us know... Went back to Fire & Ice for dinner and cocktails!! Food was just as good as last year...Had to go [View Full Entry]

Gilly managed to blag a late breakfast at Best Western in Bishop - so even though we slept in we took advantage of the complementary grub... Eventually found our accommodation in Mammoth - the town is buried under 16 feet of snow and the entrance to the hostel looks like the doorway to a igloo!! The owner and her friends arrived at the same time as we did and it looked as if we would be spending the week with the Golden Girls - the actually turned out to be really nice and a lot of fun. We were finally able [View Full Entry]
