Day 21 : Thursday 26 September 2019 : Portofino kayak tour Today was a bit of a free day and the sun is out so we decided to do a kayak tour (€210) back to Portofino in the afternoon. ☹ Not as calm as it has been previously but the water is so clear, inviting and warm. The kayak was great, Portofino was so much quieter but 2 hours later I was seasick!. Yep, on a kayak no less, turns out that the girls weren’t far behind me. Still had a great time. Can’t tell you how beautiful the water is. Had to stop and settle the tummy, so we stop at the bar at Paraggi Bay with beautiful views, what else would you do? But I had to have a coke, no wine ☹. Europe » Italy » Liguria » Rapallo September 25th 2019

Day 20 : Wednesday 25 September 2019 : Rapallo and Camogli We headed off today in the other direction and went to Rapallo, which for the largest town in the area was much much lovelier that we expected. We wandered through the marina, and eventually jumped on the train to Camogli (€18 rtn). Oh, its so quaint, the cutest little fishing village. But we’ve discovered that shops here close from 1pm – 4pm, the further north we go, the more this occurs. Wandered around, watched the beach, had some lunch (€20) and gelato before heading back. Decided that after the supermarket pasta and sauce was so good, we’d try some from a pasta seller (€ 20) (no idea what those shops are called). Maybe we got a bad one, but it wasn’t as good as the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Portofino September 24th 2019

Day 19 : Tuesday 24 September 2019 : Portofino We wandered into the heart of Santa Margherita, and thought about bussing it to Portofino, but decided by the time we worked it out, we could already be there. Besides, it’s another beautiful day in the land of Italy and the sun is shining off the water. Okay, long walk, but so worth it. Paraggi Bay on the way to Portofino was magnificent and should never be missed. If I had to do it over, its definitely worth a swim…just dive on in. Never seen such inviting water, so deep, calm and clear azure blue. You just want to jump in. We decided we would swim on the way back, but you should never wait, take the moment! Magnificent walk over the hill and through the trees ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Santa Margherita Ligure September 23rd 2019

Day 18 : Monday 23 September 2019 : Vernazza to Santa Margharita Goodbye beautiful Cinque Terre, we’re off to Santa Margherita (€25 regional train). It was a very quick train trip just moving an hour along the coast. It’s beautiful, but it was quite a walk (uphill) and we couldn’t find the Airbnb. Found the street. Ella tried to use her limited Italian to communicate with a kind old Italian man that couldn’t speak English who went up and down the hill on his scooter looking for the number. You get to the ‘top’ of the street and around the corner, it gets steeper. I can’t explain the steepness, your knuckles hit the road as you walk up, and oh boy, don’t let that luggage go as it’s a long way back down. Up, down, up, ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Riomaggiore September 22nd 2019

Day 17 : Sunday 22 September 2019 : Riomaggiore and Manarola The rain has come. More like drizzle but we’re taking the train to Riomaggiore (€16 OW). Sensational and very hilly. Strangely quiet. Not many places open on the main street, (not sure if it’s because it’s Sunday or the rain) but morning tea is great, calamari! Riomaggiore is everything that you see in the photos. The photos of the Cinque Terre are mostly of Riomaggiore. Its easy to see. There’s some dark clouds hanging around. We walked around through to the little beach. On the way there were some big waves washing over the rocks, and the ferries stopped operating, must be expecting rough seas. Walked right around the bend to the little pebble beach (Riomaggiore beach). Hard to believe that we were swimming yesterday. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Monterosso al Mare September 21st 2019

Day 16 : Saturday 21 September 2019 : Cinque Terre Hike to Monterosso and Corniglia Oh, what a day. We love the Cinque Terre Trail! We decided that with the days still being quite warm, we should make an early start, so off we headed and hiked the portion from Vernazza to Monterosso. The first 30 minutes was all uphill. In total 27000 steps and 157 floors according my health app for the day. Beautiful views, Monterosso was enchanting. A look around to take it all in, it’s just too pretty. A relaxing swim to refresh, hired some kayaks and had a paddle. Decided to hit the trails some more and took the train to Corniglia (€4 pp each leg). From the train its quite a walk up up and up to get to the town ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Pisa September 20th 2019

Day 15 : Friday 20 September 2019 : Florence to Pisa to Vernazza Off we head on the train (AUD102 prebooked) to the Cinque Terre with a stop at the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Getting on the train was the most difficult as we didn’t know if we had to get our tickets validated. Started to worry, but its too easy if you’re tickets are pre purchased. Just walk on through and find the platform. We get off at Pisa (yay – the correct stop) and head to the Leaning Tower. Dumped our baggage at the station drop point (€20) and headed off, quite a walk but glad we went and saw it, we were so close. It’s really quite cool to see. Heaps of photos….yes you have to push it over in a photo. Head ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence September 19th 2019

Day 14 : Thursday 19 September 2019 : Florence We were slack, we talked about taking the train to Lucca and also about doing a bike tour from the countryside in Fiesole down into Florence, but we had to work out how to get there. We didn’t do anything so instead we headed off to Piazza Michaelangelo for the views, had a cruisy day, found a great tiny tiny wine bar and then Graham visited the Academia Museum whilst us girls went looking at jewellery. Although it was a good day, kind of feel like we wasted it a little because we didn’t make a decision, won’t make that mistake again, although it really was a nice day. Decide to head back to the Mercato market for dinner, look around at the shops and try the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany September 18th 2019

Day 13 : Wednesday 18 September 2019 : Tuscany Tour We headed off on our tour (€240) and the day is overcast, our first cool day. We visited Sienna first which we loved. The walled cities are just so endearing, with cobble stone roads and an old worldly look. Siena has extensive views over the green Tuscany landscape. The Piazza del Campo is huge and was famous for hosting the Palio horse race. It is a bare back horse race that last about 75seconds. All they get is a banner. Onto have lunch and wine tastings. Even the girls get wine tastings so Graham and I had double ? . The host was very interesting and we learnt about the limited Chianti Classico region. Then to the Castle Monteriggioni which was really gorgeous. Quite tiny but ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence September 17th 2019

Day 12 : Tuesday 17 September 2019 : Florence Booked a tour for tomorrow to head into Tuscany, but for now we head to the Boboli Gardens (€40). Came out the back way and realised we were lost. Found a little museum in the gardens which was all about the Trajan Column in Rome. Lovely and relaxing, spent hours there and ate our donuts that we bought for morning tea ?. Lunch, gelato and a Walking tour in the evening. We learnt all about the Medici Family and history, which was really great and when we got back to AUS we watched the Medici series, so enjoyable. Checked out the downstairs Mercata markets. Outdoor markets selling goods was just as interesting. We ate in but went out for drinks. Walked 16.5kms or 23500 steps and 19 ... read more
