Vang Vieng, 7th - 9th May 2010 The bus to Vang Vien took around 4 hours and wasn’t too bad apart from half way through the journey blood from all the packages of raw meat the bus was carrying started to leak through onto the floor and then onto our flip flops making the bus smell like a butchers. Vang Vien was a very touristy area with the main attraction being tubing down the river. We shared a tuk tuk with an Aussie couple to the town centre. We had a fruit shake and then Doddy went on a rekey to find a hotel room whilst I waited with the bags. Five minutes later he had returned and we checked into our guest house. We ate at a local restaurant where I thought I would try ... read more

Krabi to Vientiane, 2nd to 7th May We arrived back in Krabi at about 3.30pm and were all piled onto the back of a pick-up bus thing. I'm sure there were far too many people on there to make it safe with people literally sitting on each others knee but we got to our hotel in one piece. That afternoon was spent wandering around the Sunday market, it was nice as it wasn't really aimed at tourists so we were able to mingle with the locals. We ate dinner down by the river at one of the hawker stalls like we had done the first time in Krabi, then went to a bar as Doddy had spotted Liverpool were playing. It was a nice bar but Doddy left disappointed as Liverpool lost to Chelsea 3-0. The ... read more

Ko Phi Phi, 29th to 2nd May 2010 We caught the boat that left only a couple of minutes late and began our 1.5 hour journey to Phi Phi. The sun was out and shining bright so we sat on top as it zipped across the calm clear waters. Arriving into Phi Phi by boat was pretty spectacular with its turquoise waters, white sands and the long boats darting about, but as soon as we stepped off the boat you quickly got the feel that it was more of a tourist destination. The end of season had pretty much arrived on the Thai islands with rainy season only weeks away so crowds were smaller, also after speaking to locals we were told that with the ongoing demonstrations in Bangkok it had deterred people from traveling to ... read more

Krabi to Koh Lanta, 26th to 29th April 2010 We were the only westerners in the mini van from Malaysia to Thailand and it was quite funny trying to interpret what the Malaysians and Thais might be saying. The border crossing went smoothly except we always seemed to join the slowest moving queue. The difference between Malaysia and Thailand was apparent as soon as we crossed the border with things looking a little less unkempt and yet more people piled onto mopeds. We arrived into Krabi at around 5.30pm and checked into our room at the Grand Tower Hotel. We ate that eve at a small food market down by the harbour. For desert I indulged in one of my favourite Thai delicacies, a Thai pancake with banana and chocolate, yum! We walked off our dinners ... read more

Penang, 23rd to 26th April 2010 Once arriving at the bus station our task was then to get to Batu Feringgi on Penang Island. As luck would have it the bus station was linked to the ferry so within 10 minutes we had paid our 1.20 Ringitts and were pootling over to the island. Penang Island was bigger than we had been expecting but with a few helpful directions from our bus driver we were soon on bus number 101. We were staying on the other side of the island so the bus took about 45 minutes passing through lots of interesting towns as we went. We got off where the hostel directions had indicated, but as we had only written down the address and not the rest of the directions we had a little trouble ... read more

Cameron Highland, 22nd to 23rd April 2010 We arrived in Cameron Highlands shortly after midday, after our 5 hour journey where we had tried to catch up on a bit of extra sleep but with little joy as the driver kept his foot jammed firmly on the accelerator around the windy roads all the way there. Cameron Highlands sits in the mountainous territory north of KL and is set amongst dense jungle and rich vegetation which unfortunately a lot seems to be disappearing due to illegal logging and farming of its rich soils and it was evident to see by eye. Famous for its tea and growing of strawberries Cameron Highlands was a refreshing place to be with its cooler climates and without the persistent humidity of KL. Once off the bus we were immediately hounded ... read more

Kuala Lumpur, 18th - 22nd April 2010 We arrived into Kuala Lumpur (KL) bus stop at around 6pm and were greeted by Rich and Jenn, or Uncle Rich as I know him as that was his given name at uni 7 years earlier. Yes another one of my friends who I went to uni with and shared a house in my 2nd year had recently moved to KL with his girlfriend Jenn and to whom we were invited to stay with. We jumped into a taxi and headed across town back to Rich and Jenns place which was a lovely spacious condo with spectacular views of the city including the prominent Petronas Towers and not to forget the swimming pool, squash court, putting green, running track and gym all up on the 8th floor. We spent ... read more

Singapore, 15th - 18th April 2010 So it was the job of Qantas flight QF5 to take us to Singapore and that it did. The flight was stopping in Singapore to refuel and then carrying on to its final destination of Frankfurt. About an hour before we landed the captain came over the tanoy and said that due to some volcano that had erupted in Iceland there was a big ash cloud, so the continuing onwards flight to Frankfurt would be delayed a little, but should only be a few hours…little did they know… Anyway, that didn’t bother us as we cleared Singapore immigration and made our way to the MRT tube station. It was easy to navigate our way around, especially as English is Singapore’s first language, making the signs easy to read. We did ... read more

The last few days in Sydney, 14th to 15th April 2010 So back into the car for what would transpire to be our final journey in the Beast. We had decided to take the scenic route back to Sydney after several recommendations from some of Doddy’s work mates. First stop was Berry, a small town with some interesting up-market shops and art galleries. We had a nice wander round trying our best to decline all the delicious looking offerings that the many bakeries in town had to tempt us. We then got back into the car and drove along a very narrow and windy road to Kangaroo Valley. The drive, although a little hairy at times, took us through some beautiful countryside, rolling hills with thick dense forests and kangaroos in the fields lining the road. ... read more
