We spent our last day getting in as much as we possibly could. Within a span of 12 hours today we were in 4 of Costa Rica´s 9 provinces. We started the morning with a visit to a coffee plantation in Alajuela, then headed up to Paos Volcano. After that we checked out some great water falls, stopped at La Selva Biological Station for a quick tour and some lunch, and then took a quick trip down the Sarqapiqui River in search of crocs and toucans! (didn't see any, but lots of other cool critters and etc.) Check out some of the pics from todays whirlwind tour... We are heading back towards Canada in the am...thanks for tuning in, catch up with you all soon. Adios - D&H ... read more

The last few days we spent relaxing in Mal Pais/St. Teresa. We surfed our last waves in Costa Rica, had some good times exploring the area on an ATV, and hit up the local reggae night/full moon party with some buddies from the Surf Camp. Today we took off for our last leg of the trip, heading to the Capital, San Jose to check out a few things before taking off... ... read more

After the bonk on the head I spent a few days recovering and watching the Heather show. I passed the time on the shore with all the other surf honeys - taking pictures, making hemp necklaces, and working on my tan...regular surf honey sort of stuff. After two days of chilling out, we took off to conquer the southern Nicoya Peninsula for a few days. We first made our way to Montezuma - got in some good hikes, hung out on some awesome secluded beaches, and had a great snorkelling adventure. After Montezuma we made our way to Cabuya, a small little hamlet next to the Cabo Blanco Wildlife Refuge. We got up early in the a.m. and tackled the hike into the reserve - a 12k trek by the end of the day. There was ... read more

It had to happen eventually - we have been having way too much fun in the water! I guess you have to pay to play. At the end of a great morning surf I (Derek) got smacked in the face with my board - leaving a nice big gash above my eye. I didn´t realize I was cut until Heather started hyperventilating! (H - only becuase his guts were hanging out of his face). We caught some waves back to shore and walked 3k along the beach to our cabins. I received hundreds of surfer salutes to my bloodied, sagging, and swollen face as we walked back. Getting fixed up was a breeze - the doc came to me, stitched me up right at the cabin, gave me some good instructions and I should be able ... read more

We made it to Mal Pais on Monday night. The trip up here wasn´t too bad - we were lucky to catch a ride with some Americans after the ferry across the Gulf of Nicoya. We have gotten two good days of surf in, catching two sessions each of the past two days. Some really nice longboard waves for us to play around on. We are going to stay on here for a while and check out the peninsula, get some hikes, kayaking, and hopefully some more snorkeling in. PS (Yes, Lindsay, it´s true. I have been carrying a huge sack on my back. Ill have to post a picture to prove it. And even better, I´ve been makeupless, and hair straightenerless for the whole trip! I can hardly believe it myself ) PSS (Happy belated ... read more

After a few days in Manual Antonio we are ready to move on. We have had some good days of surf, got out on a catamaran and did some snorkeling, and enjoyed the great beaches and nature here. Tomorrow a.m. we are heading to Montezuma on our way to Mal Pais, which is in the northwestern province of Guancaste. We are going to check out the surf there and do some exploring as well. Have a look at a few of our pics from the past few days here in Manual Antonio... D&H (P.S. - Happy Mothers' Day, Moms!)... read more

Took the bus south this morning as far as Manuel Antonio, and this is as far as we are going at this point. We found a great hostel, the waves are perfect for us, and the area and people are pretty amazing. After we got into Quepos we took a bus straight to Manuel Antonio and went for a tour in the park. The park is a beautiful, steaming hot rainforest which is full of all sorts of characters: iggy the iguana, marcelle the monkey, rod the rodent, lots of russell the rustlers, and etc. We were thinking about a surf this afternoon, but got captivated by a couple sylvester the sloths hanging out on our back porch. Sloths are often tough to see, so we couldnt pass up this opportunity. Check out the pictures of ... read more

Hey all - We stayed in Jaco today, we were too excited about getting in the water with our boards to get on a bus down south. The surf was really warm, but was also pretty crazy - bigger waves than we are used to. It was a good day though once we got used to the new boards. Heather's version is more like..... Heyyyyyy Dudes!!! The surf was intense today. I was manhandled by a couple tsunamies. Luckily I came up alive! I lost my board at one point, and D thought I was a goner...you should have seen his face! Anyhoo... I'm sun burnt and tired., gotta pack it in for the night (it's 6pm). We are going to head down south tomorrow morning, hopefully make it about half way to Dominical. Apparently ... read more

Rolled into Jaco today, nice, steaming hot beach town - made it here from the capital, San Jose this morning. Picked up our surf boards from a local board shaping shop, Carton Surf Boards. We are going to stick here for another day, get the feel for the water, then head south. We will try to send some photos along when we can. H n D... read more
