El Calafate Another long trip - 24 hrs - brought me through Rio Gallegos, the capital of the Santa Cruz region of Argentina, to the much visited town of El Calafate. In Argentina you just cannot avoid these long bus rides unless you fly everywhere or just endure the long trips on some other mode of transport, like the popular Navimag (which I would love to go on if only the price did not exceed my budget by so much). I spoke with a Dutch man yesterday about this detail. Since no more than a 5 hour car ride is required to travel between any two points in Holland, he said, Argentina puts Dutch peeps in an "interesting situation" (ie this is very weird for them). El Calafate is another one of those towns whose existence ... read more

South America » Argentina » Chubut » Trelew February 13th 2010

Trelew Not too far away from Madryn there is a small city whose name is Trelew (Welsh for "city of Lewis") which has a few things to offer, but none better than its position on the map. Of those things it has to boast is the Museo Paleontologico Egidio Feruglio, or simply MEF, which claims to be one of the most important paleontological museums on this planet. It certainly has a great display with fossils of different periods, of plants, eggs, and dinosaurs. The dinosaurs they show range in size from the small 30cm Gasparinisaur to the enormous Argentinosaur. This last one is absolutely enormous. Even though they have only a few of its bones these are enough to let the imagination run loose and lead one to contemplate how life would be with these record-holding ... read more

South America » Argentina » Chubut » Puerto Madryn February 10th 2010

Puerto Madryn The regular route that travelers in South A. take has a place called El Bolson next on the itinerary after Bariloche. El Bolson is known as a bohemian's town, often brimming with backpackers looking to explore the surrounding wilderness or getting wrecked alongside people from all ends of the Earth. It sounds like an intriguing place but I didn't come to this continent to see tourists. So I decided to head east to Puerto Madryn and observe a different kind of "wild"life. A port town, Puerto Madryn is located on a scenic piece of Atlantic Argentinean coast and serves as base camp for tourists wanting to see the Reserva Faunistica Peninsula Valdes (Valdes Peninsula Wildlife Reserve). The main attraction arrives in April: southern right whales on a migratory path north, following the schools of ... read more

I am starting a series of entries describing different people I have met along the way whose stories are worth telling for your interest and my memory. Molly and Blake I met Molly and Blake on the bus from Bariloche to Puerto Madryn. A long series of conversations began when they found out that I speak English. You see, Molly is a lady in her mid-thirties who travels around Southamerica with her 14 year old son, Blake and two small dogs who get the cargo well on bus rides. In fact, Blake has been traveling since he was 7. They began with a 3 year stay in Mexico and then headed south to Argentina, where they currently live. So now Blake is fluent in Spanish, brimming with stories, and has a hatful of friends spread about ... read more

Bad Ideas when Traveling Another post for my entertainment and yours. Please comment from your own experience. The following are bad ideas that I may have or may not have tried plus contributions: 1. Walk through a moth- and mosquito-infested jungle during the night with your headlamp on. 2. Travel Bolivia without toilet paper. 3. Start country-bashing without asking where your audience is from.... read more

How you know you are in a developing country... I decided to post an entry (or a couple) of a less narrative nature with the purpose of interacting a bit with you who read this blog or of just amusing myself. Knowing that at most 10 people read this blog at least once a month, the latter is probably the case - so I will have to try my best to surprise myself with some good thoughts. I know that the term developing country is entirely arbitrary and not accurate in many cases, but bear with me - you all have an idea of what it means. Those of you from a wealthy country (like Canada) who have explored a developing country or two have probably seen some differences between that country and your own. It ... read more

Bariloche During my stay in Chiloe I was able to meet some Argentineans who were visiting their neighbours. Despite the Chileans' rave reviews of Chiloe these gauchos gave disappointed reports of the island and told me that across the mountains, in Argentina, paradise waits. So I was off to Bariloche, Argentina. When you arrive in Bariloche one of the first things you notice is the large lake the city sits beside and the dramatic snowcapped mountains that cradle Bariloche. Some of these mountains meet the sky in needle-like spires, other are vast plains of white snow. You start getting the idea of this place... the most interesting attractions lie outside of the city, in the wilderness. Many people, especially bonaerenses (people from Buenos Aires) travel to Bariloche to camp. When I arrived I found most campers ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Varas February 2nd 2010

Valdivia Kuche, anyone? What about a schop? Does anyone need a BischoffHaus? Yup, that's right... it's German country! Valdivia is known as the German capital of Chile, and I arrived on Hangover Day! It´s not an actual holiday... it's my way of saying that I visited Valdivia a day after the end of a 5-day Bierfest. In fact, the most popular - and maybe important place to visit is the Kunstmann beer factory, where allegedly the best beer in Chile is made. I walked the 4km to see what this place is all about and got there far too early. I didn't think it worth waiting around for, so I caught a colectivo back into town. Valdivia is a large cluster of German-style buildings set around a wide river with it's own little port, complete with ... read more

South America » Chile » Valparaíso Region » Valparaíso January 30th 2010

Valpo There is a complex variety of personalities among travelers. In Santiago I met a German man who claimed to not own any sort of electrical apparatus in order to have as few tie-downs as possible. He is a polyglot, speaking Spanish, German, English, French, and who-knows-what-else. When he is not working on a cruiseship he makes jewelry for a living. Another man I met is an American who drove all the way south to Argentina, where he drove his 2003 Tundra off a 15 ft. cliff. He believes that life is better in South America than in the States (quite a contrast to all the locals who try desperately to get a Visa for the U.S. or Canada). These two are just a sample of all the different people I have been meeting and their ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza » Mendoza January 23rd 2010

Cordoba Following our lovely time in Bolivia we caught a bus from La Quiaca (northern Argentina) to Cordoba. Cordoba is well-known in Argentina for the strange, singing speech of the locals. We didn't see too much but a big city. However, during the 24 hour bus ride from Bolivia Nathan and I caught a nagging cold which plagued us during our entire stay in Cordoba. Not seeing too much in Cordoba also has something to do with our low energy levels. We did drop in on the Cordoba Contemporary Art Gallery, but the power in the block was shut off midway through our visit, ending our journey inside the Gallery. Mendoza Also a big city, Mendoza is a 7 hour drive from Cordoba. Mendoza imparts a far greater sense of space than Cordoba. Pamphlets say that ... read more
