After pretty much five days in the bustling cities of Portugal, it was time for some fun in the sun on the Algarve. With beautiful beaches and cheap airfares to nearby Faro, predictably, Lagos is a holiday haven for golfers and Brits. Apart from an old city wall, a fortress and a church, there's nothing much to see in Lagos - but that was not why we came here. Once we arrived, we found our hostel after a taxing walk in the 30+ degree heat - The Rising Cock. I kid you not, the hostel is really called this and I have the photo to prove it. Of course, a hostel with a name such as the Rising Cock is not going to attract a quiet crowd - and sure enough the first sound we hear ... read more

If you think the title of this blog is a bit strange, I chose it because it acknowledges both my current location, Portugal, and perhaps the greatest email thread ever, and the people who were involved in that thread who will all be reading this (!). That email thread will forever be etched into Roskill Alumni folklore. So I thought this title was entirely appropriate. If you have no idea what I am talking about, then don't worry it's a bit of an in-joke - forget about it and read on! La Coruña isn't the most well connected place, and as such the only train we could take down to Porto was a very late one that would arrive at 10.30pm. Not wanting to repeat the same mistake as we did in La Coruña, we called ... read more

Yes, my liver has been working overtime, since I landed in Iberia - they sure know how to party here ;-) As many of you remember from my last entry, my last night in France was very much a wine infested one, and the train the next day would have been unbearable if it wasn't for the beautiful French countryside that occupied my eyes along the way. With green fields and dinky French villages, the French countryside, I think, is the most beautiful. We even passed a couple of castles, including a fantastical one just outside Lourdes. It's weird how that when crossing the border, you immediately sense a different culture and a different visual setting even though you've only travelled less than a kilometre. The people are different, the language is different and there are ... read more

Most people have always dreamt of a holiday in the South of France - cruising on your yacht in the beautiful Mediterranean, stopping by at some of the most luxurious ports in the world, and enjoying the never-ending sunny weather on the beach. Well, apart from the yacht bit, I can now officially say that I have done it - are you jealous? Well it gets worse...if you ARE jealous ;-) At the end of my train ride from Genoa, was the sunny seaside town of Nice. Famous for the mega-rich superyachts moored in it's port, the city-side beach, it's azure waters and the town's laid-back charm, it is indeed a holiday haven. Except, that Nice was actually a lot bigger than I had thought. My hostel was up the top of the hill, and the ... read more

The ferry over from Split to Ancona was actually fairly high-rolling. Among the amenities available on board were a restaurant, bar and casino. It was a 10 hour overnight voyage, so I decided to book a bed in a 4-bed cabin so I could get some decent sleep and in the process manage to score a 10€ discount for being under 26 - score! Also, the boat was pretty empty, so there was no-one else in my cabin which was sweet as. The only thing that sucked though was the fact that the journey ended at 6.30am so I was pretty tired as I zombied through Italian immigration. "Did you not sleep on the boat?" asked the officer. "No, not much", I laughed back. The officer though wasn't joking though, as I had held up the ... read more

Waking up the next day after my awesome night out in Split was bloody awful. Severely dehydrated, not having enough sleep and hungry but with absolutely no appetite, I still managed to drag myself out of bed for a wander around Split - in the 40 degree heat. The hostel owner who was so grumpy the night before must've felt sympathy for my self-inflicted plight and told me that I could leave my bags at the hostel for as long as I wanted and even recommended where I should go before I caught the bus down to Dubrovnik. Split's main attraction is Diocletian's Palace. Built as a strong, rectangular fortress, the palace measures 215m by 181m. I went up the landmark bell tower, which is a bit scary as there are places without railings on the ... read more

I was supposed to catch a ferry from Venice to Pula, but baulked when I saw the 74€ price tag. Instead, I took a train to the border town of Trieste with my Eurail pass, and then caught a bus to Pula for the princely sum of 12.50€ (my train pass doesn't work in Croatia). Italy doesn't actually border Croatia, so the bus had to go through Slovenia, famous for being mountainous, and it's easy to see why. I can't actually say that I've been to Slovenia though, as per my own rules, I never actually got off the bus and set foot in Slovenia, so I have not officially been there ;-) You could tell once you hit Croatia though, with red earth, old clay houses and scorching sun creating a classic Mediterranean landscape. "Where are you flying to?" asked the bus ticket salesman. "Venezia", I replied. "You've missed your bus - it left at 3.50pm". "Can't I take the next one?" "Sure, but I guarantee that you will miss your flight - the check in closes at 6.10pm." Time now: 5.10pm. If I miss this flight, it'll cost me 300 euros there and back by taxi, another 80 euro for another flight to Venice, plus forfeited accommodation I've booked in Venice, plus whatever I pay for another night in Paris. I have no choice really but to gamble on a taxi getting me to Aeroport Beauvais on time. "Will a taxi get me there on time?" I ask. "Maybe, but you'll have to leave immediately." There's a taxi stand right next to the bus station (probably for idiots like ... read more

Hello everybody, from the romantic city of Venice, Italy. The last place I was in was the "City Of Love" itself, Paris. So I've spent the last two days in the two most romantic cities in the world - which are also the two worst possible places to be if you're single. I know that Europeans are supposed to be a little more "expressive" when it comes to love, but the PDA over here is just a tad over the top. The geriatric PDA outside Notre Dame almost made me bring up my beef bourguignon. But I suppose that if there are two places in the world where couples have an excuse to shove their tongues down each others throats in public, it's in Paris and Venice. And according to the couple sitting next to me ... read more

Hi All, After my whirlwind stint in the land of the free, I am reporting from my “pit-stop” and eventual destination, London. Eight days ago, back in New York City, it was 10:00pm and I needed some dinner, but I was down to $US1. I wasn’t sure where the nearest food outlet with a credit card facility was, and I wasn’t going to take the chance of encountering the homies across the road so I went without. With the lady at the hostel annoyingly booking me on the 4:00am shuttle despite my flight being at 8:45am, I had next to no sleep either. “It’ll take an hour and a half to to get there, and you need to be there 3 hours before you fly”, she said. Everyone knows that’s bullsh*t, and I arrived at JFK ... read more
