Old french steam engine in Dalat Hi, Just say that you were not in an old french steam locomotive. That is a japanese steam locomotive C-12 on display in Dalat Train Station.
For more information about this japanese steam locomotive:

For more information about the swiss-made cogwheel steam locomotive in the old time linking Dalat to Thap Cham:

Hope that helps!
Angkor in sillouette I'd say getting up at 4.30am was well worth it... it's magical! I've always been fascinated with Angkor Wat... its beautiful! Once again, fantastic photographs! :)
An Indian in SE Asia Interesting that Gareth has taken to wearing a turban on his travels around SE Asia! He really doesn't have the hair for it though! Keep on truckin' guys......
Vang Vieng I think there is one club there called something Moon, if I was to put money on it I would say it was called The Full Moon, its on the opposite end of the "runway". Lets just say if its still there its an expeience, inside its as dark as the ace of spades so watch your coins!
hello Great photos again especially in the kayak. 6 am motivational wake up - ugh - I wondered what had happened to this country when they played the national anthem on the radio on my way into work (forgotten to send Her Maj a birthday card again)
Onwards brave travellers Sounds like you guys are having a great time. Keep up the stories and pictures, its making for a great read. Oh, and thanks again for the bowl....very nice.
Visit to Orphange - I had a lump in my throat when i read this. Must have been heart-wrenching for you both. Def get a collection together when you get back. There must be loads of ppl with unwanted toys/baby clothes
More pic! Mmmmm fresh pineapple...fresh mangos...yum! I enjoyed browsing thru your photograhs, can't wait to see pics of Cambodia too, one of the places I wanna visit some day!
Rice Wine Yeah I wouldn't drink to much of that stuff, you'll see a lot of the locals walking around literally drinking it straight from the plastic bag its brewed in. You may also notice the same people seem to have painted their eyballs luminous yellow, look harder than Van Damme's shins in kick boxer and would steal the sunglasses from a blind man. Unless Melissa wants to turn into one of those I would stick to the Jam Jars ;). I wanna go back : ((((
Sailing Club Couple of points on the old Trang. Krazy Kims does a mean burger and you can borrow the hats for free. Don't try and ride one of the cyclos on your own fast as they are liable to topple and the owners who have used their life savings don't take to kindly to it (however its probably safer than tuk tuk surfing in Bangkok). After hours go to the Sailing Club and drink Jam Jar cocktails (paint striper and orange), if you can drink more than three and remember how you got home you've done well!
PS - enjoy the beach and Migs
Hello This sounds like a really interesting place. I am interested in all the different religions - covering all your bases sounds like a good idea! Seems Gareth had a narrow escape from the Barber of Saigon...
Hello! Hello, you intrepid explorers :o)
Just a quick one to say thanks for the postcard, and the regular blog updates - I'm really enjoying keeping up with you on your travels! Hope Mel's better now. I'm jealous you got to see monkeys! It was also interesting to hear all about Saigon, having worked on "Miss Saigon" once upon a time ;o)
Take care, and keep posting!
Laura xx
PS. I want to try the coconut sweets now...
Hi Hi Gareth, I'm happy you are enjoying your holidays! I have just returned from mines so I haven't been able to go through all your experiences. I was now reading your days in Saigon.
We only stayed in Hanoi and we went to Halong Bay. That was probably enough for me, considering I'm pregnant. It was not easy for us finding somewhere safe to eat, but we managed quite well. The horns, motorbikes and the people eating in the pavement was pretty amazing. I can see you are experiencing the same in Saigon. Not sure if you have already visited Hanoi. The poppet theatre is not bad.
Happy to hear you are enjoying your holidays!

Names "local lads called Wan, Boy and Wan". Don't forget to visit La and Eh the owners of the Xayoh Cafe in Vang Vieng, you may still find my bar tab there ;)
Cool Hiya, loving your travel blogs entry and seriously jealous - wishing I was there!!! Lots of creepy crawlies in the jungle. I agree with Gabby too - Penthouse accomm and the love house or whatever it was called at the start - have you roughed it at all yet? Did I teach you nothing in Europe???!!!xxx
re: Got round to it at last!!!!!!! Hi Viv-just to point out we only stayed in the Penthouse for 1 night and it was free!
Gaz says dog is delicious he has it every night-with a little garlic and chilli. Special variety in Malaysia is ridgeback!
Well done on the wedding diet-have you been dress shopping yet?
Ps- Who said you were getting a present!?! What do you want anyway?
Got round to it at last!!!!!!! Hi guys, sounds like you're having a fab time. Out of curiosity have you seen any restaurants that sell dog yet? Thought you were planning on roughing it. Who are you 2? Since when was a penthouse classed as roughing it??????
Totally agree with Gabby re: Gareth taking up writing, how much time and effort has this taken? I'm not sure I'd even send an email, let alone a full on travel blog. I'm seriously impressed.
Whose taken all the pics? Very impressive, some look like they were taken for a David Attenborough (how do you spell his last name???) show.
Anyhow, going to sod off now and have a glass of wine. Started my wedding diet at last - lost 4lbs in my 1st week. In case your wondering what spurred me on it was after Grandad thought he was complementing me by saying I'd got fatter and looked better for it!!!! not what a gal wants to hear. Good on you gramps for kick starting the diet!!!
Take care and continue enjoying. Don't forget my pressie (not dog stew please!)
Viv
We are Gareth and Melissa - two twentysomethings (for at least a few more months) who are taking a three month sabbatical from the following:
- Work
- Bad weather
- Credit crunch
- North east
- Stress
- Sobriety
- Reality TV shows
We have been married a few years now and as anyone who knows us will testify, we are fond of the old holidays.
To that end, we will be embarking on a tour of SE Asia beginning mid Feb 2009 and we reckon we will be visiting Thailand, Malaysian Borneo, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
