Dave ... I am really enjoying following your trip and have to say, you have a way with words. But my chuckles are coming from your comments regarding you and Bill's 'discussions'. I can just see the 2 of you discussing politics and religion. Rick knows how much that makes me laugh so I'm sure he will relay once he is home but please save some of it for me when you return ! Be careful ... Linda

Enjoying the Armchair Trip
Believe it or not, I'm disappointed in the evening when you don't have a chance to blog. Am looking forward to your next destination and imagining where it will be.....not really looking at a map. I say that I could never live back east again, and maybe now you can see why. We all laugh about how we get a little claustrophobic back east, and that it all looks the same....trees and more trees, but we appreciate the beauty as different...like you guys are doing now. Balloon Fiesta starts 10/5 weekend, rooms will be very scarce in the area, so still hoping you make it here in a couple of weeks. Then again that is also a site not to be missed. Keep safe! Enjoy the ride!

Just read Dave's last blog. Like your blogs? No, more like LOVE your blogs!! I just talked to Bill - told him I'd like to put together an album for him using the blogs and the appropriate pics to look back on (BTW, he wasn't impressed with that idea - go figure.) I would love to make this kind of trip cross country with friends. Glad you're all having such a great time. It's truly a trip of a lifetime. Missing you bro!! Glad there was a pic of you to look at & I look forward to your calls! Love you!!!

Rum / Vodka / Politics
Kudos to all for successfully mixing alcohol and political "discussions". Seriously, the blog is incredible. The more I read, the more I like. These are places I may never see, so you are making all my dry elementary geography books come to life! And Rick and Bill shouldn't be so silent :-) Let's hear a different perspective! Keep it going, David, I'm living vicariously...

Rum / Vodka / Politics
Glad you are enjoying it. Believe me, Rick and Bill are not silent, but we don't have enough time for all three of us to contribute, so my perspective is the one archeologists will dig up 10,000 years from now:)

Nice
Nice pictures. Grass mowed the other day and I cut down a few low lying trees. By the time you return, your yard will be tree free. Just think, no leaves to rake!! Have fun!! Ray

David's and Bill's discussion topics
Yeah, and I just sit there and listen to them "discuss" their views. Seems like more fun from my point of view than theirs... Rick

Bikes
I am interested in your bikes. What kind are you riding, and what equipment do you find useful? Any tips for packing light for a bike trip?

bikes and packing
Hi, Rick here. I ride a Honda St1300abs, David's is a new Honda Goldwing nav/abs, and Bill rides a Harley Road Glide. Essential: all liners for riding gear(thermal and rain), top quality rain gear and gloves and waterproof boots or overboots. A small netbook has been essential for researching and booking rooms, posting pics and this blog. pack enough clothing for no more than 5-7 day and do laundry on the trip. CAMERAS with big memory cards, extra memory cards, power strips and extension cords to charge everything overnight. GPS absolutely essential, must have up to date mapping. paper maps because some times they are just easier to plan a route with. Zip lock bags to pack cords, chargers, meds (ibuprofen essential for first few days until the body adjusts to the riding miles). Research how to ride in crosswinds if you will be in the midwest. I did and the tips I learned were invaluable yesterday and a few days ago. Tire repairs kits (plugs and gummy worms) and a compact air compressor if you have the room is a very good idea. bike-to-bike radio comms are very handy...we use frs/gmrs radios. MUST wear earplug when riding distances at highway speeds, especially in high winds...hearing damage is permanent! Two great friends to share the incredible experience with and to help each other if the need arises. We have a SPOT gps tracker that our friends and family can access on the internet and track our location...every 10 minutes it's updated. Don't overpack, be efficient. I wear gortex lined boots so I don't need rain boots and my Gerbing heated gloves have waterproof linings so they are also my rain gloves. 12v outlets to charge phone and power air compressor has been very handy on my bike. Carry basic tools for minor repairs/adjustments and a good knife. Flashlight. Make sure the bike is fully up on maintenance...fresh tires, brake pads, oil and filter. Clothing and riding gear for everything from very hot to 30 degree temps. 102 two days ago, 34 this morning.

150 miles for Wal-Mart...Really
Funny reading this post, can't believe people driving 150 miles to go to Wal-Mart, the discount is consumed by gas to go and return...lol. Wind is a killer, hope the weather stays nice and the calms down. Keep sending pictures. Joe

So sad to hear about the drought devastation. You are truly experiencing history (sad history, but history just the same). Hope you enjoy Rushmore and Crazy Horse. I would love to see some pictures. Sounds like the adventure I thought it would be!
