| 31st August 2008 james st. james | a pic's worth a thousand pesos (US$2) - From: Chilly In Chile people don't charge for pictures in chile, but people who have llamas (there's only like a handful in the city) do b/c that's how they make their livelihood. so while as a foreign tourist this may not seem obvious and i hope it was an "honest" mistake, by doing what you did (getting something for free that you're expected to pay for) you essentially denied the man his livelihood. you're just getting to south america and i wish you all the best in your travels, but you should be sensitive to these kind of things when taking pictures of street performers or like this guy, people w/props for photos. just be warned that in the highland areas of bolivia and peru, the natives don't take kindly to being photographed. enjoy the rest of your stay in chile and latin america. good luck with your español. ¡cheers! |

We were a little concerned that you had been eaten or taken hostage!!! It sounds like your having fun. Just be carefull no one takes advantage of you as it does happen in Asia. If you have time I would recommend you going to Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, alot of people go from here to look around the city but also to climb the mountain. You should be able to fly from Kuching to Kota Kinabalu fairly cheaply. Would also recommend going diving at Sipadan Island. It would be a good place to take your diving lessons. The diving is one of the best in asia, it on our list to go to (just make sure it is the season) You will be able to get from Kota Kinabalu to Sipadan fairly easy. We are okay, just lots of wedding planning which is very boring but has to be done.
