After leaving Rome, we didn't get back to our hotel until about midnight Sunday night. I wasn't even sure we were going to make it to the airport! Our taxi driver showed up to pick us up from the hotel, spoke all of about 5 words to us, drove us through the slums of Rome to get to the highway, and then hit the highway at about 160 to 170 kph....or 100+ mph!! And it wasn't light traffic either! I was a bit concerned that we were gonna be on the evening news either from a massive pileup on the interstate, or some overstressed taxi driver who went beserk! Fortunately, neither happened, but I was quite happy to reach the airport safely! We then had a flight delay and ended up sitting on the floor for ... read more

Sunday morning we get up and check out of our hotel and leave to go catch our Colosseum tour. Our flight doesn't leave until the evening, but our tour will run later than our checkout time, and since we only have a backpack for the weekend, we end up carrying our backpacks through the tour. Thankfully, they were relatively light! We meet up with our tour group right outside the Colosseum. It's an odd paradox to see such ancient structures along the busy streets of Rome, one feeling very out of place, but I'm not sure which, the old or the new. The ancient and the modern certainly sit side by side and at the same time, it's an impressively beautiful scene and certainly unlike anywhere else that I know. Beautiful, however, is an odd and ... read more

Okay, before I start this segment, I just have to say that anyone planning a trip to Italy should start anywhere but Milan. Everywhere we've been since Milan has been amazing in its own way, more than worth the visit, and several we would return to again, Rome certainly being high on that list! We left Geneva early Friday evening (the 20th, home safely now and trying to catch back up!) and got into Rome without event, met our taxi outside baggage claim and headed into the city. Rome is like many other large cities, with four lane highways and sky rises like you would expect just about anywhere. That is until you reach the city center. Almost all European cities of any size have what they call a "city centre" which most often seems to ... read more

The next morning, the guys are only working half a day before we head back towards Geneva, so I set out on foot (much safer) to find the town by the lake called Ascona. There are about four towns that all seem to converge at the lake. One thing about this area, is that you're so close to Italy, but you're in Switzerland so French and Italian are both spoken everywhere and you're also close enough to Germany to have vacationers there, so you hear plenty of German as well. Now I've gotten slightly beyond the salutations of either French or Italian, but you throw German in the mix and no idea of what to say to whom, and I just pretty much smiled and a little head nod and that's the best I could manage! ... read more

Getting into Geneva was no problem and we picked up a rental car this time. Got to our hotel within about 20 minutes, sat and chatted with the guys that Kirk works with for a little bit, and then hit the sack. The next morning, the guys were working until 3 and then heading over to another part of Switzerland where the factory was located. Since we had two cars, I headed out around noon on my own since I knew we were headed into a pretty section of the mountains to a little ski resort town in the Alps. I thought I'd get there early and have a chance to look around and take some pictures. The only thing about driving is you can't really enjoy much of the scenery, especially when you're driving in ... read more

We slept in a bit on Saturday morning, some of the running and multple trains/flights finally catching up a bit, and the shutters on the windows fooled us into thinking it was earlier than it was. We got up around 10:00 that morning and headed out. We didn't really have a schedule for the day so we set out to find St. Mark's Square and the waterfront where the fireworks would be later that night. There are so many alleys and canals that it's a bit easy to get lost in Venice, but if you try to keep in mind the location or direction of the Grand Canal, you'll eventually work your way back to it and you can catch a water taxi from multiple places along the canal. Just make a note of which stop ... read more

So our Venice trip begins with our two mile walk from the hotel to the train station. This being a much earlier walk, it was definitely cooler than our last walk, but two miles is a long way carrying roughly 50 pounds between two bags! And you still manage to work up a pretty good sweat in Milan even at 7:00 in the morning. But we made it in plenty of time to sit down and have a few cups of Cappucino and a pastry for breakfast. I do have to say that the Italians make excellent coffee! The way the trains worked in Milan, they actually don't tell you which platform you'll be leaving from until about 15 minutes before your train departs. From what we could tell, trains left from both the upstairs and ... read more

Back in Milan from our day trip to Cinque Terra, we walk down to the Duomo and to grab some dinner. A little information about the Duomo....the Duomo of Milan is the current seat of Milan's Arch Bishop. It took nearly 6 centuries to build and is the largest cathedral in Italy and the 4th largest in the world. And it is BIG!! The original old baptistry, built in 335, is still in existence under the cathedral. Visits are permitted inside, but not by the time we go there. The current Duomo is built on the site of a Roman basilica...a new basilica was built in the 5th century, added to in the 8th century and when it was heavily damaged in a fire in 1075, it was rebuilt as the Duomo. The construction of the ... read more

Alarm goes off 5:45, we grab showers, but still groggy, needing coffee, and stiff from a restless night, we trudge to the meeting point for our tour (with time to grab a very strong, but very tiny cup of espresso). I'm really second guessing myself at this piont, thinking I should have allowed more time in the U.K. and maybe skipped Italy all together, atleast until our Rome trip. But I also really wanted to see Venice, so I just waited to see what the day held in store for us. We had a full tour bus, with our guide Eddy who did speak English but very heavily accented, and there was one other American couple on the tour with more Australians than any other country. So we head into the Italian countryside, passing through several ... read more
