July 4th 2008 Happy Belated Canada Day!!!! We hope everyone has enjoyed their long weekend off enjoying Canadian things to do! Our story continues...in Fairbanks, Alaska, a lovely city of 80,000ish people (more than the total people who live above latitude 60 in the whole of Canada). We wandered through the Museum of the North where there were great displays of wildlife, native culture and the ice age. They had two interesting replicas of frozen ice age animals found in Alaska, a baby wooly mammoth and a bison, dated to about 30,000 years ago. We browsed the art gallery and found a most peculiar room of sound. The seismic activity of the area was translated into vibration and sound which pulsated through the room as you sat on a bench looking at walls lighted with coloured ... read more

here we are again! So, from Whitehorse we went south to Skagway, Alaska. Skagway is a sea port for the north. The cat’s meow is that Skagway is “cruise-ship-ville”. The town itself is about 1500 people. It is a bit of a tourist trap with shops galore. With 4 cruise ships docked, it turns into a flurry of tourists (about 3000 tourists per ship is our best guess) carrying bags of stuff. There are history boards posted at every rest stop along the hwy from Whitehorse to Skagway about the Gold Rush days of 1898. Every tourist info centre has a movie on the gold rush. We learned about “Soapy Smith” and his bandits that ran the town like gangsters until the townspeople kicked him out. (many a movie with those crooked sheriffs). The Ferry ride ... read more

Hi everyone! Here is what we've done in the last few days. Enjoy! Our route has been: Prince Rupert then to Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park then to Stewart/Hyder (short hwy into Alaska #37A-a must see), then north to Whitehorse, Yukon! There were a few stops in between of course! A big thank you to Todd and Jillian for their hospitality in Whitehorse! All we can say is that the views up here are stunning and breathtaking! See photos. I write this from the ferry docks in Skagway, Alaska (pics to follow when I can download them). ... read more

Hello all! Whew! have we been busy. It is 7:20 pm in Prince Rupert and I am again in a laundry room with power. The sun shines! More of that to come as we travel towards the interior again, leaving the wet coastal rain forests behind. We’ve pretty much seen all of Vancouver Island. And we hit some of the little gems off the beaten path. Sayward is a little town in the north and we found an excellent campground. We watched cruise ships go by towards the inside passage, fishing boats come in from a day of fishing and sea otters near the dock. The view was amazing. Whilst in Port McNiel we took a ferry ride to Cormorant Island, the village of Alert Bay. The cultural centre was amazing in its display of Haida ... read more

May 26, 2008 Hello everyone! We are presently in Tofino, BC on the West side of Vancouver Island. We found a laundromat and it has a plug in! So we can charge the lap top and load the photos from our cameras and get clean clothes! The weather is, well, foggy, and slightly warm (around 12 C). We are for sure in rain forest territory. Everywhere you look on the highway is either a road to a rain forest trail or a beach. Beautiful and picturesque this land we call Canada. The photos will tell you more....worth a thousand or so words... We have seen many more slugs along our journey in the pacific islands, and just the banana slugs (no human ones). We’ve learned much about how fragile our rain forests are and all of ... read more

Hello all! We have settled in on Salt Spring Island, BC, where the Arbutus tree grows and the slugs are juicy! We left off in Penticton where we had desert conditions...to our present location...the seaside rain of the pacific. In between, we stopped in Chilliwack to see Tim and Jillian. Thanks, Tim for the awesome tour of your city-town and for dinner! Great to see you! Salt Spring Island is lush, rugged, and full of artists. We are staying for the festivities of the long weekend, whatever they may be. We were able to score a campsite for $20/night until Tuesday. This campsite is linked up with trails into the lush forest, connecting to town. A lovely 20 minute walk takes us to Ganges where you can walk along the boardwalk to see the sea, shop ... read more

Hello, hello! We are working very hard, continuously, to obtain our experiential degree of leisure arts and travel. It’s a dirty job but someone’s gotta do it! So, we left off at Revelstoke. We said good bye to Loreli and Brant and continued our journey back down the #23 south back to the Ferry crossing, connected to Hwy #6 west and crossed Lower Arrow Lake via another ferry from Fauqier to Needles. Our campsite was again quiet at McDonald Creek Provincial Park. Wow. Spectacular view with the lake and mountains. Lots of beautiful cedar trees in this part of the country. Beautiful western red cedar. The air was nice and fresh in the morning and we strolled along the deserted beach, the water was like glass, good for photos. We could see patches of tree removal ... read more

Hello to all of the people in the workforce, what's it like? haha! So, where were we! We left Calgary for Waterton Lakes National Park. We arrived nice and early which allowed us to explore the town and some walks. Lots of the hikes were still snow-covered so we opted out of many of them. The one we did was only 1 foot of snow or so. We sang songs and made noise during our walk to avoid an encounter with Mr. G (aka Grizzly). Altho the forecast for the area was for 15 C, the gale force winds that blew thru the park made it rather chilly. Nonetheless, this park and village is by far one of the most beautiful places I've seen (see pics). We saw many deer and they make no notice of ... read more
