Tuesday morning I woke in Seville and was moving pretty quick. Time to pack and move on. What a treat it had been to spend 4 nights in one place! Showered and packed, I headed out for my last Seville breakfast. I swear this is the best place in the World (at least the parts of the World that I’ve been to) for a fresh glass of orange juice. With my standard AM jump starter in front of me (OJ, Espresso, ham and tomato sandwich), I read and enjoyed the sweet morning. Today I was hoping on my first train in Spain and headed to Cordoba. I wasn’t planning much time in this small city, but was quite excited to get there. Back at the hotel, I gathered my things, thanked and said goodbye to the ... read more

Monday morning in Seville….I woke up feeling a little lonely. For the first time all trip I was on my own and I had actually grown quite accustomed to waking to a buddy (my brother). Alas, he was off in Lisbon and on his way back to the States today. From this point on, I was on a solo traveler adventurer. Something I’m quite accustomed to. I decided to spend an extra day in Seville since I had fallen in love. Sometimes cities have a way of speaking to you and Seville did that to me. Much like Christchurch in NZ had and Sydney and Hobart did in Australia, Seville had crept deep into my soul. Up until this point, we had been moving at a pretty quick pace. And traveling with my brother found me ... read more

Sunday morning and my alarm goes off good and early. I get up and ready pretty quick. My day bag is packed, I check my directions one more time, wake John and say good bye and then I’m off. I start with a breakfast at what has become my favorite little spot (ham sandwich with the tomato/olive oil spread, espresso and fresh squeezed oj). Then to the car park I go. Today is one of the biggest tests of my international travel experiences…driving alone in a foreign country. I can do this. I’m an intelligent person. I will be able to read road signs (that are most non-existent) by myself and in Spanish. Um…well, sort of! Let’s put it this way, I made it out of the car park and through the first three giant round ... read more

Driving into Seville, I was super excited. As soon as we pulled onto the streets of old town I couldn't wait to get the car parked and checked into the hotel. I wanted to immediately soak in the city. We, thankfully, found our hotel street very easily. And the car park was just around the corner. We had our shortest/easiest car parking/walking to the hotel experience yet! On our walk to the hotel, we turn off the main street into essentially a narrow sidewalk/side street. Our hotel was on this small little area with restaurants on the ground floor on one side and then apartments and whatnot on the upper floors. Again, nothing is more than 5 or 6 stories high. As we were walking down this street I was so excited! This was the Spanish ... read more

We were all.pretty slow to get up on Thursday morning. I couldn't believe that some of the group was off for a wine tasting tour. I finally slept and actually felt slightly better. John got up a little after me and we headed down the street for a quick breakfast before leaving town. All morning it was raining in Valencia. I had no desire to see the city at this point. I used it for my gateway to La Tomatina. It served it's purpose quite well. I was ready to get the he'll out! Our breakfast was great. Little cafe. We pointed at the things we wanted. I actually ended up with a grilled thin sliced ham strips sort of thing and my beloved tomato bread, espresso and water. It was great! This was a total ... read more

Wednesday mornings wake up call came too early...4:45 AM just seemed cruel. John and I were still operating on US time so it was just brutal. But, up we got and out the door we were with everyone else at 5:15 AM. Today is the day. Groggy and a little cold in my short shorts, tank top & John's old t-shirt, I knew I just had to get to the bus. We gathered the other 8 in the group at their apt and the 18 of us made our way to the bus pick up point. We were in a tour group type of thing for this in order to ensure a smooth day. We arrived in a large square along with a couple hundred other people. Everyone was excited. As the buses pulled up we ... read more

Tuesday morning we got up early (finally) and hit the market for a fresh breakfast. Not much tastes better than fresh kiwi/Orange juice, egg and fresh zucchini omelet and espresso. The juice from from a fruit vendor. The rest was from one of the counter restaurants. After breakfast we made our way to the rental car place. After having driven in Puerto Rico, I've become quite confident with my foreign country driving skills. We picked up a small Renault hatchback and were on our way. One thing I did not consider...the large round abouts and how they become one big mess of cars. We were making our way to Montjuic, a large park area that has a fort. This meant navigating one of the largest of round abouts. With John as the navigator and helping with ... read more

Spain! this is a country I've looked forward to for a long time and I'm so happy to be here. For the next 16 days I'll be seeing a good portion of the country. The whole trip is centered around La Tomatina. But to start off...it's Barcelona!!! For the first 1/2 of the trip my brother is with me. This is the first time we're traveling together and I'm excited! We both flew into Bacelona on Saturday morning and have been on the move since. Taking the bus into the city you immediately feel overloaded. There are so many things to look at! The old buildings and history and culture...so much to take in. The bus dropped us off in Placa de Catalunya. It's a beautiful square bubbling with people, vendors and fountains. We make our ... read more

On Monday morning I got up and headed out on to K Rd for a good morning breakfast at my new favorite place. I've found this cafe/coffee shop that is strange and interesting and funky and plays great music. The food is excellent and the barista and staff are awesome. I'm greeted and order the porridge with a pot of tea. This is the first and last time I'll eat porridge. I think that's all I have to say about that. I settled in though and enjoyed my pot of tea and read my book. I left around 9:30 with plans to catch the bus down to the ferry terminal. My plan for the day was to head out to Waiheke Island. The ferry was at 10 am. The weather was rainy again and cold and ... read more

On Friday morning I woke up early and left on a bus bound for Auckland. It was a 10 hour bus ride and I have to say, by hour 8, I was extremelly antsy. That's a long time for me to sit still! The ride was really pretty for the the entire day. The bus was crowded and completely full for 1/2 of the day. We were able to see a steaming little volcano off of the shoreline at one point. The first half of the day bus driver was really funny. He gave all sorts of information as we pasted things. It was like having a tour guide! We stopped for a tea break in a small town. We stopped for lunch in Rotorua. We stopped for another break in Hamilton. About an hour away ... read more
