Col and Sara

Last year we spent 10 weeks traveling in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia. We loved Australia so much that we decided to live there so on the 1st November we are on the move again. We are making a slight detour via Indonesia (5 Weeks) so hopefully if we have time we will be updating our blog with details of what we are up to in the next few weeks.

We arrived in Dubai at 7 in the morning after a 15 hour flight we were knackered and were really happy that the hotel had sent a driver to pick us up and when we got to the hotel we only had to wait 30 minutes before we could check in. The first day was a bit of a wasted day. We were both so tired so didnt feel like doing much. We spent day 2 at Wild Wadi water park. There aren’t many big rides at the park and it’s ideal for families. The biggest ride was a 33-metre freefall slide described as the tallest and fastest free-fall slide outside of North America with speeds of 80km per hour on which you will experience the exhilaration of weightlessness. It was all over in about ... read more

The first thing we noticed about Sydney, compared with the Gold Coast, was the people rushing around everywhere. Sydney, like any major city, has a quicker pace to life. We stayed in a nice hotel just off Oxford Street, which is right in the middle of everything. We had good access to the rail and bus networks and could walk to most places in the city we wanted to see. Sydney is a beautiful city. It has a nice park right in the middle of the city where the workers chill out at lunchtime. We walked through the park and onto the scenic Botanical Gardens, which is full of wild cockatoos, to get a good view of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. The Sydney Harbour area is an impressive sight so we had ... read more

After Singapore we moved onto the Gold Coast to stay with Terry and Lisa for a couple of weeks. The first couple of days we went to the beach at Surfers Paradise (which was excellent) and we went to Broadbeach, which was even nicer. Broadbeach is not as busy as Surfers because there are fewer tourists. The main street in Broadbeach has a load of nice bars and restaurants and the locals tend to drink and eat out here rather than Surfers. We tried to go skydiving in Surfers, but when we got to the hangar the weather was a bit too cloudy and windy. We waited in the hangar until lunchtime, but the weather forecast didn’t improve so all dives were cancelled and we got a refund. We’d psyched ourselves up to do the ... read more

After Langkawi we moved onto Georgetown in Penang, which is Malaysia's 2nd biggest city. It's small for a city, as we were able to walk across the city within an hour and it took less than an hour to see most of the cultural sights. It would have taken less time if Sara hadn't stood in something smelly. The rooms in the hostel we planned to stay in looked like prison cells, so we quickly exited the hotel and tried a few other places along the road. We finally booked a room at the Oriental hotel on Jalan Penang. We were woken up at 5.50am by the unbelievably loud prayers coming from the local mosque over the loudspeaker. This happens every morning at the same time so you need ear plugs if want a good ... read more

We didnt do a blog for Koh Lanta because to be honest in the 2 days we were there we did very little other than sit by the beach, read and do a bit of research on the internet on Malaysia but all the same it was a nice island and a shame we didn't have more time to get out and see it. When we got to Langkawi (Smallish Island off North West Peninsular Malaysia) we decided we would have to get out an see more of this island so we hired a car for 40 RM (6.50GBP) and as you can see you pay for what you get because it was the smallest car in the world. OK maybe a slight exageration there. We had a brilliant day just going out and about ... read more

We arrived on Ko Phi Phi with the intention of staying for 3 nights. Its a small island so we thought 3 nights would be enough but within a couple of hours of being there we decided that we would change our plans and stay here a couple of extra nights. It seems we are not alone either as its quite a busy island considering the size and met quite a few people who did the same. Planned on staying 2 days and stayed a week. We met one girl who was supposed to have gone back to work that day but "Thankfully" she had gotten an ear infection and the doctor told her she couldn't fly so she had to stay another week...as you can imagine she was devastated...having to spend a week on ... read more

Arrived at Mild Bungalows mid afternoon. The accommodation was nice, but didn't have a pool and is a 5min walk from Nat Nopparat Thara beach so we haven't spent much time at the bungalows. We went for a few drinks in the evening to watch the Everton v Charlton game at the Funky Fish bar... great result for the blues! Just as the match finished there was a torrential downpour so we were stuck in the bar... normally this would be happy days, but we had to get up early next morning to attend a Thai Cooking course at Siam Cooking school. When the rain died down a bit we managed to get a tuk tuk to our hotel. The tuk tuks are great here... they only charge 20 baht each (33p) and they will ... read more

The boat trip to Koh Samui was much calmer than the last one. We decided to skip breakfast just in case. Got into our hotel early in the afternoon and went for a wander around the town to see what was in our resort. Koh Samui had a lot more to it than Koh Phangan and Koh Tao... more bars, restaurants, day trips, watersports, etc. We only had 4 days here but could easily have spent a week or 2 if we had more time. We decided to splash out on our first evening and went to really nice restaurant called the Cliff which had an amazing view over the bay between Lamai and Chaweng beach. Expensive by Thai standards (30 pounds including drinks... but well worth it.) If you ever go there just be ... read more

The boat trip over to Koh Phangan was not as smooth as the one to Koh Tao. So bad infact that colin joined the queue at the back of the boat to to throw up his breakfast. I have to admit I was glad to see land too. Had to concentrate really hard to keep my breakfast down. On arriving it turned out the Map on the back of the brouchure was a bit out of scale and we were actually staying near Thongsala (Phrueska Resort) and not Ban Tai as we were led to believe... so it was a good 20 + minutes by taxi into Haad Rin which is the liveliest resort on the island. Being near Thongsala was not that bad a thing really as it meant we had quite a few ... read more

We're now in Koh Phangan after spending 3 days/nights on Koh Tao. Day 1 - Sleep - Finally arrived on Koh Tao about 9:30am or so after a long night travelling by Sleeper train (1st class was fully booked so had to get second class which I thought wuld be bad but it was actually OK) then a bus to the ferry followed by a boat ride and then 5 minutes down to our resort by Taxi/4X4. We stayed at the Buddha View Dive Resort on the south of the island. It was really chilled out and the rooms were nice and modern. At first we felt a bit out of place as everyone else was really into diving and we were not but we thought we would give it a go so we siged ... read more
