We are Chris Fraser and Brianna Chouinard and we are taking a road trip from Ottawa Ontario to Vancouver BC (and back) in the free time we have after graduating from university, before we have to face real life again.

Today is the halfway point! Only 10 days left and both of us are still alive and talking to one another. It’s been a good trip so far and hopefully the rest of the trip continues the same way. On a side note, Chris woke up in the foulest of moods, due to a lack of food last night, however it quickly faded once we found some nourishment. We woke up and called Chris Olsen, who happens to live in town, to hang out with for the day. We’d already decided that we’d try some sushi before we left so he recommended we try Broadway Sreet (he didn’t come with since he’s not a fan). Sushi was amazing. Fish melted in the mouth. Excellent. I don’t know if we’ll be able to eat Ontario Sushi again. ... read more

We woke up at 9:30. Brianna spent the first hour on the internet, trying to write up some blog entries which ended up getting lost due to crappy internet speeds. Not sure when we’re going to be able to update again. We checked out and went on the hunt for food. We cruised up Capilano Ave and saw a nice restaurant. We stopped, ate, and then realized that the restaurant had an associated tourist trap, the Capilano Suspended Bridge. This one blew the Crazy Creek bridge right out of the water. It was massive, and with 50+ people on it it swayed and bobbed wildly. They also had a bunch of tree-top bridges strung up high between some Douglas firs which was fun. Next, we headed for the Vancouver Aquarium and Stanley Park. We got a ... read more

We left the campsite at 9:30. Before we left the park we decided to go on a few of the short nature walks which sounded interesting. The first was the Hemlock Trail, which was a short jaunt through an old hemlock stand. The next was the Cedar Boardwalk, which was a walk through an old cedar forest. We managed to go through the wrong way, likely disturbing the busload of British tourists who also happened to be there. Huge trees though…we were both very impressed. In the trailbook we called it an ‘Ecological Triumph.’ The last trail we went on was the Skunk Cabbage Trail. Now, what might not be immediately obvious is that the most abundant plant on this trail has leaves which vaguely resemble baby spinach, except they are about as long (or ... read more

We left the hotel at 9:30 and instead of going to a local bakery and juice bar for breakfast, we ended up staying at the hotel for their complimentary food. Brianna wanted to go to a used bookstore we saw on the way back from the pub last night and so we stopped off there (books were super cheap!) before going to The Mall. Our first stop in the mall was the only clothing store we visited. Next we went to the indoor amusement park. Wow. We didn’t go on any rides but we wandered around for awhile and played a few games (Whack-a-mole and a shooting-gallery) and got ripped out of tickets. It’s probably a good thing since we’d just have to cart around whatever we won. Next stop was the Deep-Sea adventures, but ... read more

According to the large omninous poster outside of the enterance to Meadowlake Park, there is to be no loud noise at anytime in the park, however the wedding party who camped there all night missed that, so we fell asleep the the soothing minstril Justin Timberlake, singing his classic "Sexyback". We awoke in the morning very greasy, having decided not to pay the money for the carwash style showers in Manitoba ($1 for 4 minutes). We decided to get packed up early and go shower before we left for Alberta. Unfortunately, the showers in the park were closed from 8:30 -10:00 for cleaning. This gave us some extra time to take a greasy power-walk through some hiking trails to kill time. As expected, the trails were bug riddled so we didn't really get a chance ... read more

We left Clearwater around 10:30 and paid 17 bucks for the site, which is good compared to the $30 we paid in Ontario. We skipped the showers ($1 for 4 minutes!) and headed out for Flin Flon, and Saskatchewan. We were a little surprised to see rocks again. In Ontario, rock faces where roads were blasted through are common. In Manitoba, we hadn’t really seen anything like this until we approached the border. More interesting was that Manitobans tend to make a LOT more graffiti than Ontarians, possibly because there is less traffic and thus less chance of being caught. It was all stuff like ‘Class of ’94 Rules’ and ‘Joey loves Lindsay’ and even one bit commemorating Brazil’s world cup victory however many years ago. Most of them had a lot of care put into ... read more

Hotel was a great idea. Left the hotel around 11, tried to get pizza hut but they weren’t open yet - went to the Don Street Deli. Was good! (Woman hacked out lungs behind Chris). When we headed out of Winnipeg the weather wasn’t as nice as it had been so far - today was rain, on and off. Saw some awesome clouds when leaving the city and took copious amounts of photos. Later, we found out that these clouds might have been responsible for a tornado which hit Elie, southwest of Winnipeg. Also interesting to note is that the rain was quite literally sideways…Chris’ window was soaked and mine was bone dry. We also saw ten million bales of hay outside the city. Southern Manitoba is flat. We took a circuitous route around the north ... read more

The drive out of Ontario was the best part of the drive. That whole area from just before Thunder Bay to the border was the nicest we've been through yet. Forests to open lakes to huge walls of rocks...we were rubbernecking the whole way. There was an hour or two where we saw NOBODY going the same direction as us, and few cars going the opposite way and absolutely no civilization on either side besides logging activity. Also, the radio stations were few and far between. We went a little crazy. We stopped for food in Ignace at a small burger stand, after which point traffic picked up. I'm not sure how that works out or where they all suddenly came from. Dryden was perhaps the most interesting town so far. They had this wierd propaganda ... read more

Woke up and left Kap early, en route to Thunder Bay. Driving from Kap to Hearst was pretty uneventful besides the MASSIVE WASHOUT. It was like some dinosaur came and bit a chunk out four feet deep in every direction. Sorry, no pics. I'm still really slow with the camera..I missed taking photos of like 5 giant plastic animals..it seems most every town in Northern Ontario has one. We stopped to look at the spectacular Palisades at Lake Nipigon. The palisades are impressive walls of rock with juts and struts. I have a (bad) photo of them on the flickr site as well as the plaque they had up. There was a waterfall as well but I couldn't find a good angle so I didn't even bother. On the other side of the highway was the ... read more

Short entries for the next few days as we're getting booted from the hotel soon. Day 2! When we went to bed at Kettle Lakes the sky was clear and the bugs were innumerable. Considered taking the heavy rain tarp off the tent. Good thing we didn't, because I woke up at 4:30 to the sound of heavy heavy rain. Went back to sleep in hopes it would go away. Woke up 2 hours later and it was about as heavy as rain gets. Huge puddles were forming around the sides of the tent and as soon as the rain let up a bit we scrambled out, jammed our stuff in the car, and headed to Kap. (I don't think Chris mentioned it buton the way to Kettle Lakes there were huge swaths of uprooted trees ... read more
