I still think the best line was 'the chief then opened his anus, I knew then he understood' and 'the chicken being cooked on a snit'. So, we moved on from Canberra to Pretty Beach on the East Coast, north of Batemans Bay. Chris's Section We're now in New South Wales. We noticed the difference almost immediately. Gone were the windswept hills of Victoria, replaced by the lush green plains of southern NSW. Apparently we're lucky to see them looking so green. Australia has been in the grip of a severe drought for over 5 years - much longer in some regions. This part of Oz normally looks pretty parched. A seriously wet and cold winter has brought out a sea of colour. The fields are full of wild flowers which are breathtaking. We wish we could have taken some photos, but you're not allowed to stop on the highway. Even if I was feeling cheeky (many of the roads are deserted) my sat-nag (Lou) wouldn't allow it! We had planned to stop at a recommended campsite just ... read more

Chris's Section Australia was a shock. The temperature rather than the change in cultures. Bloody freezing! After nearly 5 months in 35C+ heat, 15c was like going to the North Pole - or should that be South Pole?. Melbourne itself is a pretty cool place. We found a great hotel in South Yarra (Claremont Hotel). Yarra is a pretty upmarket suburb. Lots of trendies/hipsters live here. As a consequence most restaurants/bars were way out of our budget, but it's a nice area and well placed for transport. The next couple of days were spent looking for a campervan to rent. Not that exciting a story, but we went all over Melbourne. It really pays to shop around as there's a massive difference in quality and price. We went to all the main suppliers and Hippie ... read more

Asia » Singapore September 16th 2010

Chris's Section Hello lovely people. We're currently in Singapore and leave Asia today for Oz. After leaving Kuala Lumpur we headed to Melaka. Our original plan was to go to the Tioman Islands, but due to the end of Ramadan and the beginning of the hols in Malaysia we were unable to find available transport. It might not have been a bad thing as many people we've met didn't rate Tioman. It did result in an extended stay in Melaka. Although a nice place, six days is far too long. Actually, three days would probably seem excessive. We found a nice guesthouse called Old Town and met some nice people there. Well I did, Lou mainly slept. Melaka is quite interesting with colonial fixtures and fittings. I think we covered the main tourist spots in ... read more

Chris's Section We had an easy journey to Kuala Lumpur (KL). 1 hour flight, quick hop on the airport bus, one stop on the train and just over the road. Seriously, that was an easy trip. The guesthouse (Matahari Lodge) is very nice and well positioned in bustling Chinatown. The first day was Lou's birthday so we went off to the KLCC Mall (under the Petronas Towers) for a bite to eat and some cinema. At the mall we went to the food court and witnessed something strange. The place was absolutely jam-packed. It took us 20 mins just to find a seat. All the people had bought their food but weren't eating. Took me a minute to figure out why - ramadan. They were waiting for 7.25pm before they could eat. We arrived at ... read more

Chris's Section Apologies for the delay since our last blog. We haven't had much internet. In fact, in some places we haven't even had electricity, but more on that later. This might be a long-ish one. The last time we blogged we were heading to Georgetown. We really liked this place, particularly our guesthouse which was really nice (Hutton Lodge). Georgetown is a colonial town on the island of Penang. The colonial bits aren't nearly as interesting as I thought they'd be, but I still generally liked this town. It has a real mix of cultures and some excellent food - you can have a roti (flat-bread type thing) with curry dipping sauce for about 20p from a road-side stall. Very very tasty. We met an English chap called Ben on the boat over. He's ... read more

Chris's Section Our first impressions of Malaysia are positive ones. You can tell it's much more developed than other parts of SE Asia. We got the boat from Satun, Thailand and made our way to the guesthouse we had chosen in Pantai Cenang, Langkawi's biggest beach resort. The heavens opened and more biblical rain came down - Asia really knows how to do rain! We were shocked to discover our guesthouse was closed, so we had to walk about in torrential rain to find another place. We struck gold with Sweet Inn. A really nice place close to the action. Actually, there wasn't much action. Not only is it the rainy season, but it's also Ramadan, so the resort was pretty quiet. The beach in Cenang is good, but no where near as nice as ... read more

Chris's Section The site won't let me load up pics, so just text :( We're now in Langkawi, Malaysia. I'll blog about this the next time. For now just the last leg of Thailand. The trip back to Koh Samui was much easier than the trip over. We decided to go to Chaweng, which is Samui's biggest resort, as it's near the airport and Gill would be departing soon. Chaweng, what can I say? Think of a typical Spanish resort and you're pretty close. The beach is nice but full of hawkers trying to sell you all kinds of shite you don't need. The main road is full over over-priced restaurants catering for the families on holiday. We ate at McDonald's far too much. Better that than paying 3 times the amount we'd normally pay for ... read more

Chris's Section Koh Phi Phi, what can I say? It pissed it down for three days. Not all of the time mind, just when we wanted to get on the beach. The place itself is pretty cool, albeit over-developed and touristy (which we expected). It has a good vibe and a great nightlife. We found a great set of bungalows called Garden Home. Fairly basic, but very clean and cheap with funky 'jungle-style' bathrooms. It also had Thailand's fastest internet connection! We downloaded loads of films which will be much appreciated in the future. Phi Phi is a beautiful place, the Viewpoint is definitely worth the hike, but all of this was spoiled by the dodgy weather. A major disappointment was not being able to go on our cruise to Maya Bay ('The Beach'). The ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Phuket July 24th 2010

Chris's Section Gill is here. We met her at the airport and quickly introduced her to the craziness that is Bangkok. A few buckets later on Khao San Road and she was well initiated. We got up bleary eyed the next morning (maybe afternoon) and set off to see the Grand Palace. Wow - this place is amazing. Really beautiful. Hopefully the pics do it justice. We chose to fly to Phuket as we couldn't face a 13 hour bus journey. The flights only cost £25 each with Nok Air, so we thought it was a good deal. The contestants for Miss Thailand were on our flight. Let's just say it caused a bit of a commotion. They were sat all around us. One of the most pleasant flights ever, hehe.
