Chris's Section We arrived in Bangkok and experienced a new kind of heat as soon as the airplane doors opened. Wowzers! We got chatting with a cool guy called Jake, all 6' 7” of him. We shared a taxi to Khoa San Road (400b including expressway toll - £8), which is the backpacker mecca. We found our hostel, Lamphu House, easily enough. The hostel was on Soi Rambutri, so a little bit more chilled out than the hostels on the Khao San, but just a short walk away. We got a double a/c room for 600b (£12) a night. There are plenty of cheaper options (Jake's single fan room cost him 100b - £2 a night) but we were after something with all the mod cons. The Khao San is usually heaving with backpackers, but not ... read more

Chris's Section We left Yangshuo with much sadness. We really enjoyed our stay and met some great people. We got the bus to Guilin and a slight panic ensued. The bus took 1 hour to get to Yangshou, but the return journey took almost two hours. Luckily we'd given ourselves plenty of time to get to Guilin train station. We made it with 10 mins to spare. The sleeper train was really good. We were in a compartment with six bunks. We'd paid 240 yuan (£24 each) for middle bunks. I got s decent sleep and we were soon in Shenzhen and ready to cross the border into Hong Kong. Yes, I said border. Although they are technically one country, China and HK still has a border crossing. Anyway, we sailed through without a hitch and ... read more

We're currently in Hong Kong, but more on that in another blog entry. First our last days in Yangshuo, China. The internet isn't great here, so might not be able to post many (if any) pictures: Chris's Section We've really enjoyed our time here in Yangshuo. Highly recommended for anyone planning to visit China, as is the Showbiz Inn. We hired bikes from the hostel yesterday. A bargain at 10 yuan each (£1). We set off on a fabulous ride through the paddy fields. I really enjoyed it. We went up to Moon Hill. I'll let Lou explain what happened there (see below). Scary, followed by hilarious. A good day out though. Today we're killing time in the hostel roof bar (no booze) until we have to get the bus back to Guilin, where we'll then ... read more

Chris's Section We love Yangshuo. Apart from being a beautiful place, it's got a really cool, relaxed vibe. We've really enjoyed ourselves here so far. Made a few friends in the hostel too. A great bunch of guys. The hostel staff are super friendly. We've definitely gone into holiday mode - getting up late morning/lunch time. Sitting in the bar all evening. Not bad price wise - it's 70p for a massive bottle of local beer so we're not breaking the bank. Yesterday we went on a chinese cookery course (150 yuan - £15). We started by going around the market which was, erm, interesting to say the least. Slightly off-putting when you can hear dogs barking. I could also see one skinned and hanging up on a spike. Not pleasant. We stayed away from that ... read more

Chris's Section Guilin didn't really excite us much. It's a pleasant enough city, but there's not a great deal to do, particularly when it raining. We had a stroll into the town, and although it's quite nice, we found ourselves wanting to return to the hostel quite soon. The Wada Hostel was ok. A little out of the way and quiet, but clean and the staff were really friendly. Decent value for 100 yuan a night (£10). We then went to get the bus to Yangshuo (15 yuan). A girl from the hostel went with us to the main road to ensure we got the right bus. There are loads of buses that go to Yangshuo, but only one that actually goes to Yangshuo. Confused anyone? Apparently the others stop a mile outside of the town. ... read more

Chris's Section We're currently in Guilin having flown from Xi'an earlier today. Yesterday we visited the Terracotta Warriors, which are located just outside Xi'an. We didn't take a tour this time as we wanted to save a few quid and do it at our own speed. We got a bus to the train/bus station (1 yuan - 10p) and looked for the green Terracotta minibus - as listed in the Lonely Planet (or 'the book' as we call it). We found the minibus easily enough and it only cost 7 yuan (70p). Not bad for an hour's journey. Everything seemed to be going fine until the driver stopped after 45 mins and asked us where we were going. The fact that this was a Terracotta Warrior bus should have made this a redundant question! Through dodgy ... read more

Day four and five Chris's Section The last day in Beijing was an arduous one. It was 30c and the May Day holiday - one of the few national hols in China. I've never seen so many people. Every single street was jam packed. It took an age to get anywhere. As it was our last day, we went off to the Forbidden City (£6 to get in) as we hadn't seen it yet. Worst day of the year to do this. It was like being in a football crowd. The Forbidden City is spectacular, but it was spoiled for us by the sheer number of people. We should have gone on another day. Oh well. Still worth it though. Had to be done. We set off for Xi'an today. We flew as we couldn't get ... read more

Day three Chris's Section My comment yesterday about getting over jet lag was a little premature. I went to bed at 11pm last night. Got to sleep some time after 4am. Up at 6.30. Nice. Red bull time! Anyway, today was a fab day. We set off on our trip to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. This is one of the best preserved (or restored) sections of the wall. The views were spectacular. I hope the pics do it justice. This section of the wall winds it's way through the peaks. We had to walk for 15 minutes, up hundreds of steps, just to get to the wall. Then we walked about 2k along the wall, then back. It was extremely steep in places and our legs were completely destroyed by the end. Some ... read more

Day one Chris's Section We slept, yes we did. Got up at 11.30. We really needed that. Seems to have sorted out any jetlag issues. The plan today was put on hold when we found out no train tickets were available to Xi'an (pronounced (see'an) this weekend. The bank holiday in China has made mincemeat of our plans. We also found out our hostel room isn't available on Saturday night (we had only booked for 3 nights originally). So, the next three hours were spent on the internet in a panic, looking for alternative transport and accommodation. It was looking very grim at first. We've now booked another hostel for sat night and we're flying to Xi'an on Sunday. A bit disappointed as I was looking forward to the sleeper train to Xi'an, and it cost ... read more

Day one Chris's Section At last, after volcano related delays, we're in Beijing. The flight was pretty good, but our arse cheeks had died a death by the time we arrived. We landed at 6am local time (11pm UK) and we were shattered. No sleep for me on the plane as always. Lou managed a few hours - as always. We made our way through the airport with no problems, got on the airport shuttle (25 yuan - £2.50) then onto Beijing's excellent underground system. It's very simple to navigate (English signs - yay!). It's also only 2 yuan per journey (20p!!!). An excellent way to get around. By the way, I will be mentioning the cost of things quite often. When I was researching this trip I found it very useful when people mentioned prices/costs ... read more
