Northern Argentina travel update After two and a half months travelling through Peru and Bolivia, it was a bit of a culture shock (a very pleasant one!) coming over the border into Argentina. The change in living standards is like chalk and cheese between Argentina and these two countries! Once again driving on sealed roads, having toilet paper in toilets, cafes with decent coffee, rubbish bins to throw out rubbish, no stale bread, and decent sized supermarkets and pharmacies to name but a few. Anecdote: Apparently drug trafficking from Bolivia into Argentina is a big problem. We saw this first hand on the bus we took from the Bolivian border to Salta. Around midnight, half way to Salta the bus was stopped next to a little hut in the middle of no where and all the ... read more

South America » Bolivia September 10th 2010

Well, another country down, so time for an update on our travels through Bolivia. This has been an amazingly diverse country to travel through, from the jungle regions to the north, to the large cities of La Paz and Sucre, to the highest city in the world Potosi at 4100m above sea level to the freezing lake salt named Salar de Uyuni and lagoons. We started Bolivia in Copacabana, just over the border from Peru and still on the shores of Lake Titicaca. At the time, there was also a huge festival going on over the Virgin of Copacabana. It seemed like half of Peru had come across the border for the celebrations and we struggled to find some accommodation. The parties went on all night with music being blared from loud speakers until 4am, which ... read more

Anecdotes from Bolivia: Sucre. Our first day in Sucre was a bit of a disaster. After a 12 hour bus ride from La Paz, we arrived at 8am on a Sunday morning. At the hotel we checked into, we noticed an advertisement touting a bus trip out to a beautiful Sunday markets in a town 65km away, Tarabuco. As we would only be in Sucre for a few days, we realised this would be our only opportunity to go to these markets, so we quickly hurried down to the pick up point by 8:30am, jumped on the bus and off we went. Three kilometres down the road, we run into a massive traffic jam. We find out the major road out of the Sucre to Tarabuco has been closed for a bicycle race until midday, however ... read more

South America » Peru August 5th 2010

We thought it was about time for another update now that we have come to the end of our time in Peru. We have been here for about 5 weeks now and have been having an amazing time! Both Patty and I have had a hand in writing the following update. We've done some fantastic treks. In Peru did three treks which were great fun and quite different. What has been really cool is that most of the tours / treks that we have done have ended up being private tours as there have either been no other tourists booked on the trek, or they pull out at the last minute! The longest one we have done was an 8 day trek through the Hauyhuash mountain range near Hauraz in the north of Peru. It has ... read more

For the ones interested, here are a couple of anecdotes to tell from our travels. We realise they are a little long, so only read through if you have the time! * We had a 5 hour bus ride to get to the start of the 8 day trek through the Huayhuash mountain range. It was a public bus that we had to catch, so it was super old, suspension pretty much shot and we ended up with a couple of seats right at the back of the bus over the axles and next to the toilet. Now this 5 hour bus trip was only 160 km, however it was the bumpiest, dustiest most pot holed road we have come across so far. The whole trip we bounced around like jack in the boxes and by ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos June 20th 2010

After Quito we went to what so far has been the highlight of the trip…. Galapagos Islands!!! People had mentioned that it was a great place but it wasn’t until you were face to face with iguanas (marine & land), turtles (massive land ones that weighed over 300 kgs and marine ones), numerous endemic species from the Islands like blue footed boobies (really cute bird with blue feet), flamingos, pelicans, playful sea lions, Galapagos penguins amongst many others. It’s amazing to see that animals are not scared of humans in fact you actually have to get out of their way, you can get really close and they don’t even flinch!! The National Park is really well kept and protected which is fantastic to see. We stayed 8 days on a boat and travelled to a different ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cartagena May 26th 2010

Since we arrived in South America we spent over in a month in Colombia where we mostly spent our time catching up with friends and family and Chris took the opportunity to take some Spanish lessons. We also went to Cartagena where we finalised all the finer details for the wedding so all we have to do is turn up on the day like all the guests! After Cartagena we officially started our trip by doing a beautiful 5 day walk through the Colombian jungle in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to The Lost City. It was an amazing and at times challenging experience. Chris said the river crossing, hot & muggy weather and the occasional muddy paths reminded him of Kokoda. We slept in basic but very well set up camp sites that had ... read more
