Charles Wong/Cissi Thorson Hi Everyone!

We are on a road trip, driving from Toronto to Vancouver, down to Seattle, across the U.S via Yellowstone Park, Chicago and home. And stopping once in a while in between... We'll try our best to keep you updated!

Hey there! Fri, Oct. 6, 2006 Cissi & I had a great time in Squamish, B.C. We woke up early and drove to Cheakamus Canyon (30 km north of Squamish), parked at the parking lot and hiked for about 30 SECONDS to our first climb. Climbed all kinds of fun routes. They were slabby, beautifully textured, ranged in grades from 5.7-5.10a (some 2 pitches) and peaceful as anything. Ran into a few other climbers, but otherwise we had the area to ourselves all day! We basically climbed until the sun went down beh [View Full Entry]

Hey guys! Well, we left you with frost on the tent and a broken car. That is all now taken care of. We stayed two nights in Penticton and managed to both fix the car window AND get a few hours of climbing in. AND we got to check out downtown, while waiting for the car (no pharmacies or grocery stores but it is somewhat of a Mecca for hair- and nail care, medical equipment for the elderly and liquor stores). We're sure you don't care about the car so we'll tell you that the climbing was fantastic. After a winding [View Full Entry]

Well folks, last time we wrote we were in Lake Louise, waiting for the sun. The sun DID come out, even though it never got warmer than 7C... We got to the crag and started climbing at 10.30 am and gave up around 4, happy and with numb hands. The rock was beautiful, tons of colour, ledges and lay backs, super solid. Enough routes to climb for weeks. After a great day of climbing, we were really excited and wanted to climb more and therefore decided to NOT go to Jasper but to drive down to Penticton and Skaha instead. After [View Full Entry]

Ok, so the weather caught up with us..... We woke up to rain and freezing cold. So much for a day of climbing! Oh, well, we decided to take a day trip to Calgary, get some groceries and run some errands. We stopped for lunch at a bar/concert venue that turned out to have fantastic sandwiches. Calgary also apparently shuts down on Sundays, so after lunch we went back "home". As we were rained out of our original climbing plan, we came up with plan B. If the weather sucks tomorrow, we are moving on to Jasper for a pit stop [View Full Entry]

Dear friends, Yesterday Cissi & I decided to check out Banff in the evening. WOW!! We walked the streets in amazement at the spectacle of wealthy tourists, kitschy tourist traps, Japanese tourist groups, high end fashion boutiques (who needs black leather stilettos??, is a new purse a new mountain accessory?... does it make you hike better?), Louis Vuitton, Yuppie yoga wear, an all Christmas store...., basically anything that takes you away from the outdoors that surrounds this lit up mountain Vegas. Bought liquor for the cold evenings.... it's actually been quite warm in the days an [View Full Entry]

So, after a few rainy days, we are now in super-sunny Canmore! It's T-shirt weather and we are going to try and climb tomorrow, if this gorgeous weather holds... We've been staying in hostels in Winnipeg, Regina and Waterton Lakes, so we are clean, fed and all whirl-pooled (after a very fast-paced hike to Crypt Lake yeasterday, we ended up stopping at the Waterton Lakes Health Club for some whirl pool action. Leaving us limber and loose for the drive to Canmore).... The drvie from Winnipeg to Regina was brutal. Flat, smooth, flat and flat. And prairie. Thank god for the [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone! We are sitting in an internet cafe in Osborne Village in Winnipeg. We slept like rocks yesterday after driving 700+ km from Sleeping Giant to Winnipeg. We' re staying at Ivey House HI Hostel in a cozy (yet very stuffy) room. After storing and drying gear, Cissi & I went for Ethiopian food at Mazzawe (THANKS TERESA!!!!). The veggie platter was so good and filling. It was Cissi's first time eating Ethiopian, so she had fun eating with her hands! The weather has been back and forth rainy and sunny. Our driving days are dry and our hiking / [View Full Entry]
