It's never great to land late at night in a strange new place though it seems to happen more often than not. Based on our previous experiences with indian immigration we made a dash for the front of the queue at passport control however our plans went belly up when we found ourselves waiting at the baggage carosel for half an hour for our bags. We headed straight for the prepaid taxis booth and were led to a car. I must say the barrage of "sirs" and grabbing for our bags never happened and unlike China everyone seemed quite unimpressed by us being there. Arriving late at the hotel we went straight to bed and awoke the following day feeling really disorientated. Looking outside the window wasn't a good idea; first impressions were shown mountains of ... read more

Asia » Singapore April 15th 2008

Alas our time in Singapore was a little disappointing, not only had we chosen accommodation which was really far from town but it was also smack right in the middle of the red light district. We stayed in Geylang five years ago and had some fond memories of the place so decided it would be a nice idea to go back there however it is now seedy and not somewhere I would recommend. Our road was literally a cattle market, at night girls would line the pavement while gangs of men would walk up and down until they found one at the right price. We reckoned all the hotels were pimping the girls as conveniently they all offered rooms by the hour. Anyhow as we had already paid for the entire stay we decided to make ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City April 10th 2008

We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City on a day bus, it took 10 hours but was a far better option than the sleeper bus. The bus dropped us right in the heart of traveller district and as usual we were hounded by touts the moment we got off the bus however we walked directly to the guesthouse we had in mind and were in a room within 10 minutes of getting off the bus and in a restaurant with a nice cold beer a further 5 minutes after that! Between spending a few days wandering around HCMC we found time to visit the Cu Chi tunnels. Though there are others in the country these are the most popular due to their location to the city. It was a half day tour that sadly didn't get ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » North Central Coast » Thua Thien - Huế » Hué April 1st 2008

We were told that the word "Vietnam" translates to running or moving south which coincidently fits very nicely as a title to this blog. After spending too much time in the north we had to whistle stop down through the central areas quickly so the rather brief sequel that follows reflects just that. You wouldn't have thought Hue was once the capital of Vietnam, so calm and peaceful, very different to Hanoi. The city and the surrounding area contains lots of important historical sites so after checking in to the very friendly Binh Dong 1 we set out towards the citadel to visit the Imperial city. The imperial city is a combination of ruins and restored buildings which date back to the 19th century. The site sits on 520 hectares with the exact position chosen by ... read more

The train arrived in Hanoi at 5am so we ended up getting an inconveniently expensive taxi from outside the station which took us conveniently the long way around to a really inconveniently expensive hotel. When it was light we wondered around the edge of Hoan Kiem lake watching the locals participate in group sessions of Tai Chi. The only sight open was the Den Ngoc Son temple so we went inside to have a snoop around and enjoy the views of the lake. Our first impressions of Hanoi was the traffic; busy, noisy, lots of scooters, and absolutely no room to cross the road safely. Whenever we had to cross the road we would try and wait for a local to turn up and then cross with them. My natural insticts when crossing the road is ... read more

I'm not getting on a motorbike taxi with my rucksack I protested however after a few minutes I reluctantly gave in. I held on tightly and we sped away still arguing with the driver to take us to the hotel in Lao Cai and not Sa Pa, an hour and a half away. Our first choice of hotel was fully booked so after wondering the streets for twenty minutes we opted for a really crap awful hotel a few doors down the road. After the long day we had had it was really confusing when the battle axe behind reception took our passports and didn't require payment upfront. Its funny how you get used to doing things one way then move on to another country and the process is completely different, throws you a bit. After ... read more

Searching for the 643 bus in Kunming's long distance bus station was proving difficult but after showing several people our ticket we were pointed in the direction of an old tin can on wheels on the sad side of the station. The windowless bus, air heavy with cigarette smoke and packed with locals gave the indication this was going to be a torturious seven hours. Feeling brave we perservered, together we rode the bumps, put up with the constant stares and dehydration the whole way to Yuanyang. Having been told at the ticket office the bus terminates in the new town we were under the impression we had to get two buses, however when the bus got to the new town and no-one got off we decided to stay on and see where it took us. ... read more

It seemed after the ease of the plane flight getting a taxi to the hotel was going to be a little more difficult. We took our places in the taxi queue and soon got to the front where a Chinese official in uniform kept blowing his whistle loudly to keep the taxi's moving. We had our hotel written down in Chinese text and went about explaining where we wanted to go. The official came over and spoke to the taxi driver and we thought we were on our way until we drove out of the airport compound, stopped and the taxi driver began muttering in Chinese. He then got out of the taxi and started unloading our bags out of the boot. Taking the hint we headed straight back into the airport to try again. On ... read more

After finishing our last blog we emerged from the internet loft to find the sun had finally decided to make an appearance so we paid for another night to saddle up to explore the countryside by pedal power. A little negotiating and we rode away only to get lost in town for half an hour. The directions in the lonely planet guide book were ropey to say the least so we ditched the book and followed our noses. Maintaining a leisurely pace whilst taking in the scenery we reached moon hill in about an hour, we knew we had arrived by all the touts standing outside the entrance preying on anyone western. We ate at the cafe at the bottom of the hill, I tried the countryside dumplings and local rice wine which sounds a lot ... read more

Our escape from Hong Kong was a two hour express train to Guangzhou east station. Pulling into the train station I noticed there was no English signs anywhere, the first indication that we had arrived in China. We got off the train based on time more than fact and followed everyone else. We helpfully did not have any Yuan so in order to get a taxi we had to deal with a local tout to change money. We kept the amount to a minimum so we wouldn't get ripped off too much. Once in a taxi we headed out to our hotel, Xin Hua Hotel situated along the Pearl River. We got a good discount of nearly 50% off the rate however had to settle with a fairly noisy and cold room. The german owned 1920 ... read more
