I just read your posting...
...And am leaving for Buduburam on June 3rd. I really enjoyed reading your posting. What organization did you go with? I got the internship through a UN affiliate although I am not working directly for the UN. Would you perhaps be willing to tell me a bit more about your experience there? Many thanks, Allison

Response to Janet P.
Did you read all of my other blogs, or just that one? Is your anger directed at my description of Cape Coast and how the people were unfriendly? I did also say that I knew I had only met a handful of people and so did not want to generalise. I am a writer and can only honestly report on what I saw. Have you any idea how I actually felt during my time in Ghana? How can it have been a guilt cleansing trip for me and my friends? We may be white, we may be European, but we ourselves didn't commit the atrocities. Your attitude sums up to me all that is wrong with the world. If we continue to point the finger of blame because of past events, how will the world ever move on? Have you ever paid every last penny you have to work on a refugee camp? Have you helped anyone set up a business despite having barely any money yourself? Have you ever placed yourself in a totally alien environment away from famiy and friends, into a situation where you will see suffering and pain, but do so anyway because you want to do something to help, even though it may be a very small drop in a very large ocean? I can't afford to adopt a whole vilage, or pay for the college education of ten youths. If I could I would. I gave everything I had. It wasn't a vacation. If I had wanted a vacation I would have gone to Spain and relaxed by a pool. Instead of having a go at those who are trying to help, however small their help may be, maybe you should concentrate your energies on doing something productive yourself. Your attitude really saddens me.

I Too, Was in Cape Coast for Easter
I too, was in Cape Coast for Easter, and on the contrary, I found it to be a place of absolute beauty and warmth. I have seen poor places in England, France, Italy, Germany, the United States, the Caribbean, South and Central America, Korea, Japan and the Philippines. The only difference was that in these places European didn't come in and force the natives to turn on each other for the purpose of enslaving them. Taking them thousands of miles away from their, never to be seen again homeland and placing them in an imperialized system of slavery that would dehumanize them, come in rape the land and the people of precious resources and then attempt to redeem themselves years later by volunteering for a month. Was this some sort of guilt cleansing trip for you and your friends? The children and the young people proposed to you and your friends, danced and entertained you as a way to eat. They are victims of their youth. But the adults, know the hard truth. They have lived the struggle of not being able to feed their families, watching loved ones die because of inadequate medical treatment, diseases, filthy water and a corrupt government that as you so eloquently put it "lined their pockets" with the European and white American dollars. Are you of African descent? Had you been, your very being, heart and soul would have been shaken to it's very foundation as you felt the pain and agony of so many that had lost their lives. It didn't "bring it home" to you. It woke you up to the cruel understanding of just a few of the atrocities that your European ancestors committed. Europeans, Asians, Canadians, white Americans and now South Americans are pouring into Ghana re-colonizing and enslaving the people again at an alarming rate. It's a shame that the people there can't earn enough to purchase a decent home for themselves. The "Door of Return" was not intended for you. Just as the "Door of No Return" was intended for their ancestors never to return. But we are coming in full force, equipped to bring back the Royal Inheritance that was stolen from them. They are tired of individuals with European ancestry coming in with their "I am here to help the poor Africans attitude". Unless you adopted a village, and intend on supporting it for life, or you have arranged for college educations for at least ten youth, or you are willing to live and die to make sure that the "pockets of all" become full enough to sustain their families without hand-outs, then you have done absolutely nothing. This was just a vacation for you.
