Hey all! Now that Cody and I have had some time to reflect on our trip...we wanted to share with future road trippers what we learned. Remember every trip is different: the length, the locations, the budget, the needs and wants..but hopefully some of our findings can be applied to help all types of travelers. What would we do differently? -Only go to South Dakota/Mt. Rushmore if it’s on the way to somewhere else you want to go. We both weren’t overly impressed with Mt. Rushmore and felt that we could have spent that time better. -Check the weather for EVERY place before you go and prepare for all types of weather. We had to make some lodging changes on the fly because the camping gear we brought wasn’t equipped for the snowy cold weather we ... read more

Hey all!Carrie again! I think the most repeated theme during Cody's and my trip has been to do and see all we can in the most fun and inexpensive way. We're going to make a followup post after our trip is through to share all the ways we saved money and kept this trip low budget. Lodging was a big money saver for us (which we will go into more detail about), but it's also been a big contribution to the "fun" part as well. Upon arrival to San Diego we found a Hostel located downtown in the Gaslamp Quarter. This area is known for it's night life, bars, live music, etc. For anyone who's not familiar with how hostels work, its basically a dormitory style hotel. There's girls, boys, and shared rooms with bunks and ... read more

Hi folks, I think Carrie skipped my turn last time! But I was busy with some stuff. Anyway, its my turn! Do you ever go on a vacation, and then realize its time for a slowdown or break from it? Welllll, if you take a roadtrip, you better throw that out the window... pun intended. There's too much to see and too much to do! After heading out of Yosemite, we headed South towards the Sequoia National Park to check out some trees. Yep, trees. 300 foot, 2.5 million pound trees with diameters of up to 40 feet! Some of the trees' bark was thicker than 2 feet. What an amaing forest to see. We were able to visit the largets tree (by mass) in the world, The General Sherman Tree before headed over to the ... read more

"Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first." --Mark Twain Hey Friends! Carrie, again! So it’s time to play catch up because we’ve been without internet signal and charged electronics for quite a few days. There’s lots to fill in on, so bare with me…or should I say “bear” with me??...no? not funny? Okay. After leaving Yellowstone National Park (where Cody was very disappointed we didn’t see a grizzly), we found a much needed shower and night’s sleep in a dinky but inexpensive Motel 6 somewhere in the middle of Idaho, and then trudged onward toward California! With three more states to go through before getting to the west coast, we made the logical decision to split the drive up and stay the night somewhere ... read more

Sooo…If They’re Called the Black Hills, Then Why Are They White?? Hey all! Carrie here. So you know when you have a plan in your mind of how something will play out….and then the exact opposite happens?? Yeaaa… Cody and I left Chicago on Sept 10th with the idea of driving through the night to Keystone, SD. We’d get to Mt. Rushmore around time for sunrise and then spend the day hiking and catching up on sleep between two trees in our hammocks within the nearby national forest. What a lovely picture. We made a few stops on our 15hr trek, including a brisk walk along the La Crosse river, bordering Wisconsin and Minnesota. As we got closer to Rapid City, SD, (20 min from Keystone) we were greeted by white fluffy snow! Snow?? On September ... read more

Cody and I are both in somewhat of a transition period in our lives and decided, why not make the most of it and travel our beautiful country?? I finished up an 11-month environmental AmeriCorps program in Tennessee this past July, and have been spending the past two months traveling, adventuring and enjoying time with people who mean the most to me. The reason for no rush into a grown up job is because I’ve received a Peace Corps nomination to serve 27 months in Tanzania starting February 2015 working in Health/HIV/Malaria Education and prevention. I’m currently waiting for the official invitation which will confirm my nomination and send me off in five short months. I’ve decided that if I will be spending two years in another country as a representative of America....I should probably ... read more

Cody here, Folks! We're on the road and fairly vested in our trip at this point. After a couple days, we've stopped by Cleveland, and made it to Chicago, IL! To help stay awake and keep us moving we've been doing 5-10 minute workouts at rest stops. Chicago is our second stop, so lets back up a little. Monday, Sept. 8th was spent in Cleveland with Jane and Glenn. Jane is a previous boss of Carrie's and continued friend, and Glenn is her soon to be husband! They were both great hosts and truly took time out of their day to help us enjoy Cleveland. First, we toured Cleveland. The city has really placed a tremendous effort in revitalizing their ... read more

Hi, Carrie here!! Greetings friends and fellow adventurers! Cody and I are a few days away from embarking on a 3 week cross country road trip! We decided it’d be a cool idea to blog along the way to share experiences, ideas, funny stories, mistakes….and all that comes along with spending every waking (and sleeping) minute with your significant other. We invite you to join us on this journey and get to know us a little better! The following is our guideline/loose itinerary for how to make the best use of our 3 weeks. Comments and suggestions are always welcome! We haven’t done this before and we know there isn’t one right way to do it. Hopefully we can learn a thing or two along the way. Please share suggestions of places to go, things to ... read more
