Hello from Chiang Mai Hi Jay and Cara, it's Jin Teik here. Hope you guys are doing ok in India despite the misadventures with the food! Since leaving Nepal for Bangkok I have been travelling through northern Thailand, stopping by the towns along the way until I reach Chiang Mai. Thailand is a nice place and the food is excellent (and clean!). Hope you guys have fun in India and your immune systems continue to hold up.
Merry Christmas! Namashte and Merry Christmas, Carolee and Jay!
As far as food goes, I don't know if this will be any help but on SAS they always said to only eat food that was "piping hot" and to only drink potable water. They also said to avoid any street food in India, for the sanitation reasons that you nicely sumerized.
Also my step-dad's friend (who's a doctor) said that the acidity of Coke helps kill germs, so he recomnded coka-cola with every meal. Hope that helps!
I love these journals; after reading them I'm about ready to quit my job and go a-trekin too. Thanks for the great stories!
151 I remember talking to somebody once who went to India and she said that every night she would take a shot of 151 to kill any bugs in her stomach. She said that she never had any problems and the people with her who didn't take the shot did get stomach problems. who knows! try it out. -Frank

Happy Birthday Hi sweetheart! Happy 28th. I know it's not the 20th yet, but I will not be up when you turn 28 at 3:33am. Hope you do something special. Give my love to Jay. We really enjoy reading your journal. If you misspelled any of those places, no one would know. I miss you. My love to you both.
Happy Birthday CL! I cannot tell you guys how much I love living vicariously thru you w/ your blog. Makes my life a little more exciting every day I read. Stay safe!
Hey Sunshine! Wow- great to hear from you. As you can see, I'm having a hard time holding down a job so I thought I try my hand at full-time vagrancy. Shoot me a real email for chrissakes and let me know how you and Joe are doing.
Hey Michele So as you and Mike are well aware of my less-than-spectacular navigational skills (recalling that drive in Brooklyn), you understand we are going through a lot of confusion over here- which makes it that much more exciting. Great to hear from you-- so we'll come over for the pool party when we get back, yeah?
Better beaches Yes we heard Hainan has great, lounging-type, beaches-- especially Haikou. But we weren't able to make it down there. In all actualiy, Xiamen was great as it was.
Thanks Lauren. We know you're with us every step of the way. Megan, I must've been sick on Illinois Prarie education day. I have used poop to keep warm before, but never knew you had to burn it.
Sorry Lynette They wouldn't allow us to take pictures inside the temple of the Jade Buddha. Carolee has been trying to be inconspicuous with the camera, tucking it under her sweater, but the flashing red light where her nipples should be seems a bit too peculiar to the Chinese
Happy Birthday Carolee, Your trip sounds wonderful. A little too strenuous for these old bones, but a neat experience for the 2 of you. Don't know when you'll next get to a computer, so wanted to be sure to wish you a Happy Birthday.
Love ya, Aunt Mary
envy is setting in... j-diddy/carolee, glad to hear you guys are in nepal. definitely on the "to do" list for me someday to get a glimpse of the goddess of the sky! hows the altitude in comparison to the rockies? i've also heard about the mia's while on treks there...hope you at least had a scoop of some risque' ice cream!! look out for one another. jc
Jay "Sedaris" Chanpong What a wit, Mr. Chanpong! I have been enjoying your entries from the beginning. Send Carolee my best. Glad you two are having a hell of a time!

Vomiting and Buses At the end of August i went to D.C. on the chinatown bus... not even before we left there was a guy throwing up onto the aisle... that guy ended up throwing up like 4 times the whole ride... partly in a bag and partly on the aisle.
Lhasa love Jay - take it from me, Bugles corn chips will do that. Especially in a religious place like Lhasa; those chips are unholy, after all. Are they a corn chip? Are they a puffed chip? Are they digestable musical instruments? The answer to the riddle is yes to all three. (the first in the bag; the second in the mouth; the third when.. leaving..) Which is just all wrong for Buddhism, which strives for nothingness; to be three things, all poorly, just doesn't sit well.
Have a great time in Tibet, and happy birthday! -Dean
Getting soft on me Ok, what's the deal, you writing a paper on tibet or what? The last paragraph makes me think think you are trying to win some sort of journalism award....
Sounds gorgeous though. Wish I was ther. Or at least not here.

Having recently joined the unemployed set, we're forced to flee the NY rents and lifestyle for dollar dumplings and tsingtao. We start out in China and muddle our way through to Turkey with stops in Mongolia, India and Egypt among others. ... full info
