Thanks for the tip Stu but I went to Rome a coupla years back. You are indeed correct, it is totally awesome, dude! I'm gonna seek out some more places of ancient and medieval finery. I'm toying with Cairo, Barcelona, Malaga and Istanbul at the minute. Or maybe all four!

Triumphant Steps & Columns
Hi Wooster! Looks like it's going/went went in the land of Ouzo (I take it you tried some!!). The pictures look fantastic, and it definitely looks an interesting place to go to - it certainly seems to be dripping with history. It seems like you're into your stride with all this historical-city kinda stuff, so if you wanna keep it in this vain, then I can highly recommend going to Rome as your next stop. That place is also crammed full with historical buildings / artefacts and monuments of great importance and interest, and as long as you don't make the same schoolboy error as me and refrain from drinking from the Trevi fountain you'll stand a good chance of actually getting out of the loo and around some of the places!! Catchya Later, duder

I think one of the advantages of rebuilidng Athenian monuments is that they left vast amounts of data behind due to their tendency to use stone and terracotta as writing tablets and artistic materials. And in a lot of instances of the rebuilding they're only filling in small gaps in what is mostly intact. I take your point though, inevitably there will be some speculation involved.

Great Photos
For some reason I imagined Athens as being a bit "rough", it's nice to be wrong, I'm going to have to go there one day. I'm unsure how I feel about rebuilding and repairing ancient structures. On the one hand it is nice to see how it might have been, but that's the problem, it's often "might". If you do head down to Crete and see the palace of Knossos then that's an example of rebuilding being done very badly. Bits of it were rebuilt and redecorated by a bonkers English archaeologist who claimed to have good evidence for what he was up to, but later discovers cast a lot of doubt upon that. So what you see might very will be quite inaccurate. I was quite shocked to find out that Stonehenge was "repaired" as recently as the 1950s.

You've made Athens look very appealing :) If you're going to be in the UK on Saturday the 13th of November then drop me an email...

Looking at the pictures, I really could have sat at some of those places for absolutely ages, feeling and thinking about life and feeling quite humble I must admit. Beautiful architecture, in wonder of how they ever managed such a build at that time, and just chilling. That lunch looked huge did you really eat it all? And I agree, I don't get the cheese in the wine?! By the way, sorry about the cold thing, as I've had it for seven weeks, I hope you didn't it it from me! xx

Well I was trying to do something humongus but then I realised it was humongus for humongus' sake, rather than what I actually wanted to do. But hey, true freedom is the freedom to be wrong. :)

I've no idea what you're talking about Hils. Alonsy? What's that? Listen, spend some money, buy the DVD of City of Death with Tom Baker, Lalla Ward, John Cleese, Julian Glover and other luminaries, scripted by Douglas Adams and filmed on location in Paris. It's hilariously witty and jolly good fun. You'll love it.

Oooo a bit of Greek action then
Very good. Crete's quite nice if you're over that way, you've got the Minoan ruins which are pretty interesting, but I'm not sure if it's worth it for the history alone...

Apologies on the cheese front. I was seduced by the spirit of the Revolution into believing the French were superior. :)

Smell my cheese
Apparently England produces over 700 different cheeses. Just cos Tesco only sell 3 of them don't go bashing our cheese making abilities!

Blimey. What about things like Motels? It "seems" possible to drive across the US and just get into a motel at night. How long do you think you'll be back for?
