Later that night we received the phone call we'd been waiting for for the past week. Jade had had her second child, a little boy named Charlie. I spoke to her, my parents and texted my brother and sister. I was so pleased for her and proud of her, but suddenly felt very homesick. I won't lie to you, I had a little cry to Mike; I was happy for Jade and the tears were partly for that but I was also sad that I wasn't there with them. My family is really close and have always shared important moments like this. Speaking to them made me feel a lot better though, and I would have a new nephew to meet when we went home. I put the finishing touches to the card I'd made for ... read more

It was sunday we left Sens, and the sun was once again shining brightly. We'd decided to get to Auxerre and the Nivernais canal in two hits – the first taking us to Joigny for the evening. We were lucky with locks and only had a long wait at the first one. Several were equipped with floating pontoons which meant less jumping off of the boat and doing rope work for me! The trip took a few hours, and during it we enjoyed the sun, chatted, sung along to show tunes and power ballads and sipped wine (naturally!). I tried my hand at driving the boat and found it quite enjoyable – until a boat came the other way... I had a little flap about what side I was meant to pass him on, passed him ... read more

Sens is a gorgeous town – bustling yet quaint, ancient yet modern and we ended up staying for 5 days. Mooring was alongside the town quay, electricity and water included and was absolutely free. Not only that, but the moorings overlooked the gorgeous 12th century St Maurice church and as the sun set every evening we were treated to stunning views of its stained glass windows shining. The moorings were also home to a family of ducks – those of you who know my love of birds will understand how this was the icing on the cake for me!! We pulled up behind a big Brit barge owned by a lovely chap called Andrew who rented space on his boat to holiday makers. He was in between guests and doing some work on his barge. As ... read more

The River Yonne We left our barge mooring at Avon early on Sunday morning, determined to get through as many locks as possible and onto the River Yonne. We passed St Mammes, which seemed to be in Festival mode - loads of huge péniches were decorated with bunting and flags and rows of stalls and stands were set up on the quayside. It was all very pretty! A little further on there was a strange miniature circus set up by the river - coloured tents, a truck but no sign of any people or animals - god knows what it was, we went closer to try to find out but had no luck! Within 3 hours we had gone through the last two big Seine locks smoothly and joined the River Yonne. Our pilot guides had ... read more

Well, we are currently experiencing gales, rain, thunder and lightning down at the Med so have decided to take the opportunity to catch up on some of the 2 months of blogging I have hitherto neglected! Time to cast my mind back to the end of August.... After our stormy night at Samois we moved a little further down the Seine to Avon, a small town right next door to Fontainebleau - I would finally get to see the Château! We tied up at a barge stop for the night, grabbed camera, laptop in its backpack, phone and money and headed off on our bikes in the direction of Fontainebleau. Mike appeared to have lost the ability to walk, and slipped getting off the boat, and again as we got on the bikes. “Are you alright?!” ... read more

After a good nights’ sleep in a peaceful boatyard with visions of toons on a loop through my brain, we got up fairly early in a semi sunny day and decided to head off the Marne and back to the Seine. The Marne is a lovely river with lots of traditional guingettes alongside offering French cuisine, live music and tea dances. Unfortunately we were passing through late on a Wednesday morning in August and only one was open - which was packed! Undeterred we decided to make the most of the dry day (bad weather was forecast for the next few days) and get as far along as we could. We hit our record for locks successfully navigated that day, going through 6 in total before arriving at the newly built Draveil marina on the River ... read more

Lagny and DISNEYLAND After departing Paris with fuzzy heads in the bright sunshine, we said our farewells to the Seine and headed up the River Marne to Lagny and Disneyland. I have never been so excited. I thought my little head was about to explode. After a few sunny hours meandering along, navigating locks and a tunnel we arrived at the pleasant spot of Bonneuil where we spent our Saturday night far more sedately than we had the Friday! We sipped wine and ate BBQ’d food in peaceful and beautiful surroundings whilst the sun set in a bright azure sky. The next morning we rose early and cruised up to Lagny, amongst more sunshine. On the way Mike did some very impressive lassoing, neatly hooking a bollard first time in a lock whilst a crowd of ... read more

Our mooring at the Port de Plaisance was not free, as the one by Adrien and Benedicte had been, but it was beautifully still. We spent the first afternoon getting the boat tidy and homely looking again - there’d been little point when she was constantly thrown around on the Champs Elysee. Again we made the most of the bikes and explored off the map and every point we were interested in on it. We had a particularly memorable day going back the way had came and visiting the Eiffel Tower, Les I nvalides, Trocadero, Champs de Mars, Palais Challois, Pantheon, Jardins Du Luxembourg and Medici Fountain and cycling past Musee D’Orsay, Saint Severin and various other landmarks. The day started with an amazing lunch at ‘The Lounge’ on La Place De La Bastille. We both ... read more

We spent 4 nights in total moored alongside Adrien and Benedicte and were out from 10 - midnight every day to avoid the motion of the dreaded ‘Bat-oh-moosh’. We cycled off the map of Paris kindly given to me by Liz and John, in every direction and explored every foot of the town. We had a memorable Sunday in the pouring rain, visiting the creepy La Conciergerie where Marie Antoinette, Louis 16th, Robespierre and several thousands of others were held prior to death by guillotine. In it you can still see Marie Antoinette’s cell and examples of other cells around the prison. The history of Paris was truly fascinating and we tried to discover as much as we could. Next we visited Notre Dame in the rain. There was a huge queue to climb the turrets ... read more

We departed Asnieres in bright and beautiful morning sunshine and began trundling our way along toward Paris. I was far too excited to just relax or read and sat up looking around the whole time like an excited pup! At first I was disappointed by the grey urbanised and industrial views lining both banks of the Seine, but these soon gave way to more interesting sights, in particular odd little caravans mounted on floating platforms (now there’s a proper sea gypsy for you!) and shanty towns built into the foundations of the road bridges that ran alongside - seriously, each square cubicle beneath the bridges was filled with cupboards, beds, clothing plants and sofa’s - some didn’t look too bad! I f you’re going to be homeless you might as well make your place look nice ... read more
