ON THE AMERICAN QUEEN - VICKSBURG Vicksburg was incorporated in 1825 in honor of a Methodist minister, Newitt Vick, and was a prosperous city until the 47 day siege during the Civil War. There are several interesting museums in this small city, with a great deal of emphasis on the Civil War and the river. There are also several hills in town. Walking downhill is a lot easier than going up. It was a beautiful day today with sunshine and temperatures in the low 60’s. The hop on - hop off tour had seven stops. The first I got off at was the Old Depot Museum which had a nice diorama of the siege and several models of ships. Also, a working model train exhibit was well done. My next stop was the Old Court House ... read more

First, corrections were submitted by viewers - the correct name of the plantation I visited is Oak Alley and the passenger capacity of the American Queen is 436. My apologies! NATCHEZ, MISSISSIPPI - FEBRUARY 26 - Woke up to a cold (46 degrees), windy (15 mph), cloudy day. Sweater and jacket day and even at that you wouldn’t want to stand out in the wind any more than you had to. By the time I came back to the ship the sun was peeking through, the wind had calmed a little and the temperature raised a little. Natchez is a small city, less than twenty thousand people, but clean and has some beautiful buildings. I started my hop on - hop off tour at a large, well preserved ante bellum mansion, the Rosalie Mansion, built in ... read more

ST. FRANCISVILLE LOUISIANA - Interesting small town in West Feliciana Parish, population 12,500 including 5,000 inmates at Angola Penitentiary. St. Francisville has a population of fewer than 2,000 but is the parish seat. They have three traffic signals. A lot of the homes and buildings are ante bellum and very beautiful architecturally. The hop on - hop off tour included a stop at the Grace Episcopal Church built in 1827 and slightly damaged in the Civil War. Weather was cloudy and relatively mild but a cold front came through and rain started after I was back on board. There was a very good lecture by Lynn Roberts outlining her music career and talking about the various bands she sang with and, in response to a question from the audience, mentioned that she was born one day ... read more

We docked right near the entrance to Oak Alley plantation, a short walk and I was at the plantation “Big House”, originally built in 1820 and since 1972 owned and maintained by the Oak Alley Foundation. I went through the house with an exceptionally good tour guide dressed in period costume. After the tour I went to the other areas of the plantation, including the café, where I had a mint julep (at 10:30 am, but it was five o’clock somewhere) and wandered back to the ship. We were steam boating at 1:00 pm. The Mississippi water is clear. You can see bottom in some places up to a depth of maybe two inches. Seriously, real muddy but not so much that you can walk on it. I saw considerable barge and commercial traffic, but not ... read more

NEW ORLEANS FEBRUARY 22 - I flew in from Tampa via Atlanta arriving at 5:30 (CST) as scheduled. I had a nice surprise, I was upgraded from economy to first class. The mileage programs pay off! What a pleasure it was. The cloud formations were exceptionally beautiful! A shuttle to the Hilton Riverside was good, the only problem I experienced was the long lines at registration of this big hotel (they had a weekend competition for elementary and middle school age cheerleaders going on). I survived and got to my room and changed before going to dinner at Emeril’s. I walked from the hotel to the restaurant and made a stop at Gordon Biersch for a great draft beer. What an experience Emeril’s was! First class in every way. I sat at the chef’s bar and ... read more

BUENOS AIRES DAY TWO January 30 - Another beautiful day in Buenos Aires. Sunny, warm. My two bags to be checked through were packed and picked up last night, I have to wait for my tour and transfer to the airport bus until 9:15. Everything went smoothly and there were three busloads of people with flights departing in the evening that went through the city with stops at Riboletta Cemetery, a cemetery in one of the wealthier parts of town, where Eva Peron is buried. She is an interesting personality in Argentina’s history. People loved her or hated her, primarily along class distinctions. After busing through a few more neighborhoods we made a stop in the market area of one of the poorest neighborhoods, Il Camitto (I don’t have my notes handy, so the spelling is ... read more

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA - JANUARY 29 What a beautiful scene coming into Buenos Aires this morning. It was sunny and warm even at 8:00 am. We have logged 5,540 nautical miles since the ship left Valparaiso, Chile. The afternoon brought temperatures of 86 degrees on the ship and 98 degrees in the city on tour. Fortunately, the bus was air conditioned. Sunrise was at 6:10 and sunset was 8:01. I went on a morning tour covering the major highlights of Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires is a large city, 4 million residents with another 10 million in the metropolitan area. The downtown area and most residential neighborhoods were clean. The architecture is impressive and it appears to be a vibrant city, one that I could spend some time in. Statuary is prevalent in all the parks, and ... read more

MONTEVIDEO, URAQUAY JANUARY 28 - Wow! What a beautiful day. Full sun, 88 degree, breeze, couldn’t be better. Sunrise 6:03 am; sunset 7:58 pm. Took a “highlights” tour which gave a good overviews of a city of 1.2 million. All the pluses and minuses you might expect, great sections and poor sections. The old section, especially, had great architectural details and was very inviting. A few more miles and we were very much in poverty areas. The litter was amazing to me. Maybe it was because it was a Monday morning and the weekend cleanup crew couldn’t work their magic yet, but it cast a poor shadow on the beauty of the area. Many statues in the parks throughout the city. The tour was, as advertised but I had difficulty understanding the guide because of his ... read more
