I'm moving to Nice to do an English Teaching Assistantship for 7 months!

I won't post all of my pictures on here since there are far too many, but I've got all of them up on Picasa if you want to take a look: My Picasa.

Other new pictures in Fun Thangs and Excursions! Pics from Cinque are posted--sorry, was going to edit some out since they get extremely redundant, but didn't have time and will do it later! Just figured everyone would want to see!

Leaving the land of sunshine and good wine and heading home to the RIC

I am writing this all very much after the fact, but I figured better late than never, and this will be one of my last blogs! Em Deddens came to visit this past week despite the fact that it seemed as if the fates were conspiring to make sure she didn't! Thanks to Mr. Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland, Em's initial flight was cancelled. No one quite knew how much trouble the volcano was going to cause, and Em was put on a flight for the next day to Scotland with the plan being to bus everyone on the flight to London Heathrow. At the time, European airspace was opening back up and everyone figured they would be able to make their connections at Heathrow. Wrong. Poor Em. One bus ride later and Em is stuck in London ... read more

Whew, well the last few days have been an absolute blast! Coming back early from vacation didn't turn out to be bad at all. Of course the train strike has complicated things a bit, and it will hopefully end sooner rather than later. After I got home I spent a day just doing laundry and resting after our worldwind travels. Cannes Shannon and I really wanted to go to Saint-Tropez, but the next day, when we had planned to go, I got to the train station to find that because of the strike we wouldn't be able to get a train until later in the afternoon. So instead I just hopped on the train to Cannes and spent the day with Shannon. We grabbed lunch at a great Italian restaurant and I had some of the ... read more

So much to blog about! I've been on Spring Break for about a week now, and I just got home from my first big trip. My roommate went home about a month early, and she left the Wednesday before break began. Of course I didn't have much time to miss her since I left on Sunday, but it's so quiet here now! I miss having someone to chat with! Although I will say that I absolutely love having a normal sized bed now since I've pushed our beds together, and the left-overs she left me were amazing :) So my last day of school was Friday the 2nd, and on Sunday I hopped on a train to meet my friend Shannon and we headed to Arles, Barcelona and Carcassonne. We stayed in Arles for 2 nights, ... read more

Praha, Praha, Praha! I have recently come to the conclusion that it takes me so long to write these blogs because I write them when I get home. I would absolutely prefer to write my blogs while I am visiting these places--it would just be so much more fun to write them WHILE I'm there soaking everything in and feeling fully inspired by what is around me. Sadly, lugging a laptop throughout Europe seems a little more than slightly frivolous, especially for a weekend. Not only that, but I enjoy being away from things that have a tendency to take up half of my time and leave me in a coma like state. But, that means that when I get home I have to acknowledge the fact that the trip is over. Writing my blog ... read more

This entry feels very fitting as I spent a good part of my morning in the French welfare office--CAF. Most of the assistants apply for CAF since it offers monetary assistance to cover housing costs--l'aide de logement. Since our salaries are so low we usually get reimbursed a percentage of our rent. Unfortunately, since it takes forever to get things done around here, I probably won't get the reimbursed money until April, but at least it's retroactive and I will get one big lump sum. Better late than never. Especially now since there are only a couple of months left and most everyone's funds are running dangerously low, and by dangerously low I mean that there is a good probability I will never want to eat a PB&J again when I get home. But the purpose ... read more

Hannah came to visit me in Nice the same day that I got back from Ireland. Unfortunately, she missed her first train and ended up getting in later than anticipated, but, thanks to the kindness of a rather crazy woman at the bus stop, she made it safe and sound! We had a very relaxing wonderful time, and it was so great seeing her again and being able to catch up! Not only do Hannah and I share a love for taking tons and tons of photos (as clearly evidenced by the pictures added here and in Picasa--mostly taken and all edited by her--but we also share a deep appreciation for all things French which makes our visit all the more wonderful. Day One: Nice The first day after Hannah's arrival we slept in (I was ... read more

After Shannon left on the 14th, my roommate and I took off for a week in Ireland! We spent 2 nights in Dublin, followed by 4 nights in Cork and then spent our last night back in Dublin before heading home! The following is a summary of our adventures: We flew out of Nice around 2:30 in the afternoon on the 15th. The flight out of Nice was incredible. It was a little overcast, and, when the plane took off, there was a good few minutes when the plane was flying below the cloud cover. It was like flying between two worlds--the sparkling, aqua-marine water below where you could still see the boats, and the blanket of clouds above with the sunlight piercing through in places as if there were holes. The flight didn't take long ... read more

I feel like weeks have past since Shannon has been here--we've been so busy!!! I woke up super early on Sunday morning to go fetch Shannon from the airport. Her plane flew into Terminal 2, and she was supposed to head over to Terminal 1. By the time I got to the airport her plane had already landed--it got in early--so I sat down where I could see the shuttle drop-off and waited. Of course, I sit there debating the entire time whether or not I should head over to Terminal 2 to see if I can catch her, and I am worrying that she will get lost or confused or just sit there waiting for me to find her. Thirty minutes pass. Now I am really fretting, but I don't want to get on a ... read more

Last week, one of the teachers, and my contact person, at Lycée du Parc Impérial invited me over to her house for dinner on Saturday. So Saturday afternoon I baked a batch of peanut butter cookies--I didn't want to show up empty handed, but I am still far too nervous about buying a bottle of wine for a French person, so the best alternative is to do something utterly American--and I headed over to Agnès' house around 7:30 for dinner. Dinner was absolutely amazing. I spent the evening with Agnès and her husband, Philippe (who used to be a teacher at Parc Impérial and is now teaching journalism classes somewhere), and Julie and her husband. Agnès is hands down one of the coolest teachers I work with--super laid back and loads of fun--and she and her ... read more

Here and There... I usually try not to blog about the same old same old, la vie quotidienne if you will, but I have done a few things of note lately--some of which were too funny to miss blogging about. So, here goes: Despite the fact that my roommate and I were feeling a little under the weather, we made the trip out Thursday night to go do bar trivia at Ma Nolan's again. It really is a lot of fun, and we have a pretty big group of people now. Funny though--the week before we were all in the top 10, and this past week we were all like 26th and 27th place haha. Guess you can't win them all. Still a ton of fun, but Friday classes are just that much worse the ... read more
